Digital system provides superregulation of nanosecond amplifier-discriminator circuit

Feedback system employing a digital logic comparator to detect and correct amplifier drift provides stable gain characteristics for nanosecond amplifiers used in counting applications. Additional anticoincidence logic enables application of the regulation circuit to the amplifier and discriminator while they are mounted in an operable circuit.

Traveling-wave photodetector has sub-nanosecond response

Mercury-doped germanium photodetector uses waveguide which increases the absorption of microwave energy within the photodetectors. Waveguide and photodetector are placed in liquid helium Dewar and cooled. A carbon dioxide laser is light source and klystron provides microwave energy. Measured response times are approximately 1 nanosecond.

Nanosecond radar observations of the ocean surface from a stable platform

The measurement of ocean surface waves with a nanosecond radar pulse from a fixed platform at vertical incidence is discussed. By reducing the pulse width of radar until the pulse width resolves the vertical water wave structure, a set of radar returns is available to describe the ocean surface characteristics which differs from returns obtained by conventional radars. A block diagram of the radar and the principles of operation are presented.

Nanosecond time transfer via shuttle laser ranging experiment

A method is described to use a proposed shuttle laser ranging experiment to transfer time with nanosecond precision. All that need be added to the original experiment are low cost ground stations and an atomic clock on the shuttle. It is shown that global time transfer can be accomplished with 1 ns precision and transfer up to distances of 2000 km can be accomplished with better than 100 ps precision.

Open-loop nanosecond-synchronization for wideband satellite communications

A synchronization technique for use with an onboard processing satellite communication system is discussed. The satellite oscillator is used both as the system time reference and as the frequency source for all downlink carriers and data clocks. Downlink timing is established at each system earth terminal through a combination of carrier and data-clock tracking and a downlink timing epoch signal consisting of one bit per TDMA data burst. Uplink timing is established by an open-loop range prediction process using precision ephemerides calculated and distributed by the central control station. Overall timing accuracy of the uplink signal at the satellite receiver of + or - 7 nanoseconds permits unambiguous identification of each data bit position in a 128 Mbps TDMA burst. This is accomplished by means of simple, inexpensive terminal hardware using available crystal oscillators for time/frequency references and digital synthesis techniques that may be implemented in digital LSI chips.

Early Events in the Folding of an Amphipathic Peptide A Multi- Nanosecond Molecular Dynamics Study

Folding of the capped LQQLLQQLLQL peptide is investigated at the water-hexane interface by molecular dynamics simulations over 161.5 nanoseconds. Initially placed in the aqueous phase as a beta-strand, the peptide rapidly adsorbs to the interface, where it adopts an amphipathic conformation. The marginal presence of non-amphipathic structures throughout the complete trajectory indicate- that the corresponding conformations are strongly disfavored at the interface. It is further suggestive that folding in an interfacial environment proceeds through a pathway of successive amphipathic intermediates. The energetic and entropic penalties involved in the conformational changes along this pathway markedly increase the folding time-scales of LQQLLQQLLQL, explaining why the alpha-helix, the hypothesized lowest free energy structure for a sequence with a hydrophobic periodicity of 3.6, has not been reached yet. The formation of a type I beta-turn at the end of the simulation confirms the importance of such motifs as initiation sites allowing the peptide to coalesce towards a secondary structure.

Polarimeter provides transient response in nanosecond range

Conventional polarimeter with a Senarmont compensator improves transient response and eliminates manual manipulation. A sampled photomultiplier output is fed to a low pass filter, resulting in a signal representing the optical state existing at the instant of sampling. With this technique, an unknown transient-induced retardation can be measured.
