NERSC_Lightweight Distributed Metric Service (NERSC_LDMS) v4.4.2

Miscellany This LDMS Loftsman/Helm Chart horizontally scales LDMS daemons in order to achieve a 1Hz sample rate from over 5,000 nodes, collecting 38k metrics per minute on Perlmutter. This LMDS Configuration relies on already running `ldmsd` producers running on nodes, which produce metrics via sampler plugins. The Helm chart distributes the collection of metrics from producer acrross many aggregator and storage `ldmsd` daemons, ensuring no damon is overloaded and data loss is avoided.

Software Deployment Process at NERSC: Deploying the Extreme-scale Scientific Software Stack (E4S) Using Spack at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC)

One of the many benefits of using a high-performance computing (HPC) system at a Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) HPC facility is the large number of software products, built and optimized for the system. The HPC center staff and HPC vendors provide optimized software such as libraries and even full scientific applications, ready to be used by users as building blocks to accelerate scientific discovery. Behind each provided packaged software module are a large number of decisions - which compiler, optimizations, variants/options - to build the software on the target system. And, even before the software gets deployed, the software must be developed, tested, and maintained, including deprecating old versions and ensuring compatibility across versions. The software lifecycle is complex and is further convoluted by a web of interdependencies on other software.

Best Practices for NERSC Training

The National Energy Research Supercomputing Center (NERSC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) organizes approximately 20 training events per year for its 8,000 users from 800 projects, who have varying levels of High Performance Computing (HPC) knowledge and familiarity with NERSC's HPC resources. Due to the novel circumstances of the pandemic, NERSC began transforming our traditional smaller-scale, on-site training events to larger-scale, fully virtual sessions in March 2020. We treated this as an opportunity to try new approaches and improve our training best practices. This paper describes the key practices we have developed since the start of this transformation, including considerations for organizing events; collaboration with other HPC centers and the DOE ECP Program to increase reach and impact of events; targeted emails to users to increase attendance; efficient management of user accounts for computational resource access; strategies for preventing Zoombombing; streamlining the publication of professional-quality, closed-captioned videos on the NERSC YouTube channel for accessibility; effective communication channels for Q&A; tailoring training contents to NERSC user needs via close collaboration with vendors and presenters; standardized training procedures and publishing of training materials; and considerations for planning HPC training topics. Additionally, most of these practices will be continued after the pandemic as effective norms for training.

Quantum Computing Technology Roadmaps and Capability Assessment for Scientific Computing - An analysis of use cases from the NERSC workload

The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), as the high-performance computing (HPC) facility for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, recognizes the essential role of quantum computing in its future mission. In this report, we analyze the NERSC workload and identify materials science, quantum chemistry, and high-energy physics as the science domains and application areas that stand to benefit most from quantum computers. These domains jointly make up over 50% of the current NERSC production workload, which is illustrative of the impact quantum computing could have on NERSC’s mission going forward. We perform an extensive literature review and determine the quantum resources required to solve classically intractable problems within these science domains. This review also shows that the quantum resources required have consistently decreased over time due to algorithmic improvements and a deeper understanding of the problems. At the same time, public technology roadmaps from a collection of ten quantum computing companies predict a dramatic increase in capabilities over the next five to ten years. Our analysis reveals a significant overlap emerging in this time frame between the technological capabilities and the algorithmic requirements in these three scientific domains. We anticipate that the execution time of large-scale quantum workflows will become a major performance parameter and propose a simple metric, the Sustained Quantum System Performance (SQSP), to compare system-level performance and throughput for a heterogeneous workload.

Real‐time XFEL data analysis at SLAC and NERSC: A trial run of nascent exascale experimental data analysis

X‐ray scattering experiments using free electron lasers (XFELs) are a powerful tool to determine the molecular structure and function of unknown samples (such as COVID‐19 viral proteins). XFEL experiments are a challenge to computing in two ways: (i) due to the high cost of running XFELs, a fast turnaround time from data acquisition to data analysis is essential to make informed decisions on experimental protocols; (ii) data‐collection rates are growing exponentially, requiring new scalable algorithms. Here we report our experiences analyzing data from two experiments at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) during September 2020. Raw data were analyzed on NERSC's Cori XC40 system, using the Superfacility paradigm: our workflow automatically moves raw data between LCLS and NERSC, where it is analyzed using the software package CCTBX. We achieved real time data analysis with a turnaround time from data acquisition to full molecular reconstruction in as little as 10 min—sufficient time for the experiment's operators to make informed decisions. By hosting the data analysis on Cori, and by automating LCLS‐NERSC interoperability, we achieved a data analysis rate which matches the data acquisition rate. Completing data analysis within 10 min is a first for XFEL experiments and an important milestone if we are to keep up with data‐collection trends.

Checkpoint/Restart Vision and Strategies for NERSC’s Production Workloads

As a primary approach to fault-tolerant computing, Checkpoint/Restart (C/R) improves scientific productivity for users, provides scheduling flexibility for computing centers, and protects against system failures. While both applicationspecific (or application-level) and transparent C/R are used in practice, we are interested in transparent checkpointing, which is vital for system-level checkpointing. Developing and maintaining transparent C/R tools for HPC applications, however, is labor intensive and highly complex due to ever-changing HPC systems and diverse production workloads. Existing C/R tools are often research-oriented, so there is a gap to close before they can be used reliably with production workloads, especially on cutting edge HPC systems. In this position paper, we present our journey to prepare a production-ready MPI-Agnostic Network-Agnostic (MANA) transparent checkpointing tool for NERSC, and share our vision and strategies to bring transparent C/R capabilities to NERSC’s production workloads on current and future systems.

High-Throughput Data Processing at FRIB Using ESnet

Real-time or nearly real-time (nearline) data processing methods are critical tools as detector technologies and data acquisition (DAQ) systems allow for higher data rates and volumes. The introduction of the energy sciences network (ESnet), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) supported high-speed network for scientific research, creates opportunities to leverage the computing power of DOE facilities like the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). As a first step toward realizing a DOE Office of Science Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) pattern, an automated workflow was developed to remotely process data obtained from a nuclear physics experiment at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at NERSC with data transferred between FRIB and NERSC over ESnet. The workflow demonstrated the ability to process one week’s worth of experimental data in approximately 90 min and was used successfully for nearline analysis during a recently completed FRIB experiment. Here, a summary of the workflow development and results of recent demonstrations will be presented.

Accelerating Advanced Light Source Science Through Multi-Facility HPC Workflows

Synchrotron light sources support a wide array of techniques to investigate materials, often producing complex, high-volume data that challenge traditional workflows. At the Advanced Light Source (ALS), we developed infrastructure to move microtomography data over ESnet to ALCF and NERSC, where CPU- and GPU-based algorithms generate 3D reconstructed volumes of experimental samples. We employ two data movement and reconstruction models: real-time processing as data streams directly to NERSC compute nodes, and automated file transfer to NERSC and ALCF file systems. The streaming pipeline provides users with feedback in under ten seconds, while the file-based workflow produces high-quality reconstructions suitable for deeper analysis in 20-30 minutes. This infrastructure enables users to utilize HPC resources without direct access to backend systems. We plan to extend this architecture to more endstations, supporting our beamline scientists and users.

Integrating DOE ASCR Computing into HEPCloud through GlideinWMS

Fermilab's HEPCloud facility expands the laboratory's computing capacity by provisioning resources beyond the local grid, using GlideinWMS to deliver pilots to where experiments such as CMS and DUNE run. The High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities of the DOE Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) are a growing part of that pool. HEPCloud currently provisions NERSC over SSH, but NERSC is moving away from that path as it adopts multi-factor authentication and directs automated access to its Superfacility API and the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) APIs. Maintaining and extending access across the ASCR ecosystem now requires provisioning through these interfaces. This work adds new pilot submission paths to GlideinWMS for the NERSC Superfacility API, IRI, and Globus Compute. Each uses the provisioning model GlideinWMS already applies to batch resources, so experiments can run on ASCR computing resources without changes to their existing workflows. This work finally presents a comparison of the paths to guide which interfaces are best suited for different workflows.

Evaluation of LLVM Flang for Production HPC Applications and Modern Fortran Features

In 2025, LLVM released its first Flang Fortran compiler version considered ready for widespread evaluation. We know of no published assessment of Flang compiling a workload- derived portfolio of high-performance computing (HPC) applications. We address this gap using workload data from the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), which supports more than 10,000 scientists on approximately 1,000 projects. The NERSC workload analyses identify many Fortran components in heavily used applications. We selected 10 such packages with available source code. We compiled them with Flang 22.1.3 on NERSC’s Perlmutter system. Six compiled without code modifications, though some required build-system changes. Three compiled after minor source edits, mostly to address Fortran standard violations. One built only without OpenMP enabled. We evaluated seven additional packages selected for their use of, or enablement of, standard Fortran parallel features: multi-image execution and do concurrent. Six such codes compiled with most or all unit tests passing.

Architecture and performance of Perlmutter's 35 PB ClusterStor E1000 all-flash file system

NERSC's newest system, Perlmutter, features a 35 PB all-flash Lustre file system built on HPE Cray ClusterStor E1000. Here, we present its architecture, early performance figures, and performance considerations unique to this architecture. We demonstrate the performance of E1000 OSSes through low-level Lustre tests that achieve over 90% of the theoretical bandwidth of the SSDs at the OST and LNet levels. We also show end-to-end performance for both traditional dimensions of I/O performance (peak bulk-synchronous bandwidth) and nonoptimal workloads endemic to production computing (small, incoherent I/Os at random offsets) and compare them to NERSC's previous system, Cori, to illustrate that Perlmutter achieves the performance of a burst buffer and the resilience of a scratch file system. Finally, we discuss performance considerations unique to all-flash Lustre and present ways in which users and HPC facilities can adjust their I/O patterns and operations to make optimal use of such architectures.

Near real-time streaming analysis of big fusion data

Experiments on fusion plasmas produce high-dimensional data time series with ever-increasing magnitude and velocity, but turn-around times for analysis of this data have not kept up. For example, many data analysis tasks are often performed in a manual, ad-hoc manner some time after an experiment. In this article, we introduce the Delta framework that facilitates near real-time streaming analysis of big and fast fusion data. By streaming measurement data from fusion experiments to a high-performance compute center, Delta allows computationally expensive data analysis tasks to be performed in between plasma pulses. This article describes the modular and expandable software architecture of Delta and presents performance benchmarks of individual components as well as of an example workflow. Focusing on a streaming analysis workflow where electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEi) data is measured at KSTAR on the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center's (NERSC's) supercomputer we routinely observe data transfer rates of about 4 Gigabit per second. In NERSC, a demanding turbulence analysis workflow effectively utilizes multiple nodes and graphical processing units and executes them in under 5 min. We further discuss how Delta uses modern database systems and container orchestration services to provide web-based real-time data visualization. For the case of ECEi data we demonstrate how data visualizations can be augmented with outputs from machine learning models. Here, by providing session leaders and physics operators, results of higher-order data analysis using live visualizations may make more informed decisions on how to configure the machine for the next shot.

Privacy Preserving Federated Learning for Advanced Scientific Ecosystems

We present a framework to provide privacy preserving (PP) federating learning (FL) across multiple computational and experimental facilities. This work joins the compute capabilities of National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory Research Cloud (ORC) with simulated experimental data, such as those produced at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). We describe the software infrastructure developed to provide privacy for computational and experimental networks. We developed algorithmic privacy across the federated system by embedding database security, computation, and communication into the federation architecture, utilizing scientific tools developed by the experimental community.

Enabling Scalable VQE Simulation on Leading HPC Systems

Large-scale simulations of quantum circuits pose significant challenges, especially in the context of quantum chemistry, due to the number of qubits, circuit depth, and the number of circuits needed per problem. High-performance computing (HPC) systems offer massive computational capabilities that could help overcome these obstacles. We developed a high-performance quantum circuit simulator, called NWQ-Sim, and demonstrate its capability to simulate large quantum chemistry problems on NERSC's Perlmutter supercomputer. Integrating NWQ-Sim with XACC, we have executed QPE and VQE algorithms for downfolded quantum chemistry systems at unprecedented scales. Our work demonstrates the potential of leveraging HPC resources to advance quantum chemistry and other applications of near-term quantum devices.

sfapi_client v1.0

This software is a client designed to interact with the Superfacility API developed at NERSC. It allows users to easily access the api in python and programmatically interact with the compute resources available at NERSC. Other implementations are ad-hoc and made by our user base, the goal of the project is to encourage more users to adopt the API by making it easier to start building complex HPC workflows.

NWQ-sim

NWQSim is a quantum circuit simulation environment developed at PNNL. It currently includes two major components: a state-vector simulator (SV-Sim) and a density matrix simulator (DM-Sim) and we may add more components, such as a Clifford simulator, in the future effort. NWQSim has two language interface: C/C++ and Python. It supports Q#/QDK frontend through QIR and QIR-runtime. It supports Qiskit and Cirq frontends through OpenQASM. NWQSim runs on several backends: Intel-CPU, Intel-Xeon-Phi, AMD-CPU, AMD-GPU, NVIDIA-GPU, and IBM-CPU. It supports three modes: (1) single processor, such as a single CPU (with and without AVX2 and AVX512 acceleration), a single NVIDIA GPU or a single AMD GPU; (2) single-node-multi-processors, such as multi-CPUs/Xeon-Phis, multi-NVIDA/AMD GPUs; (3) multi-nodes, such as a CPU cluster, a Xeon-Phi cluster (e.g., ANL Theta, NERSC Cori), an NVIDIA cluster (e.g., ORNL Summit, NERSC Perlmutter).
