An Evaluation of the Spectral Irradiance Data from the NSRDB

A recent effort by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has led to a new radiative transfer model, the Fast All-sky Radiation Model for Solar applications with Narrowband Irradiances on Tilted surfaces (FARMS-NIT), to efficiently compute spectral irradiances in the plane-of-array (POA). This model has been implemented in the National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB) to provide photovoltaic (PV) resource in both narrowband and broadband wavelengths. This study conducts an evaluation of the spectral irradiances from the PV Resource dataset using surface-based observations at NREL’s Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) and University of Oregon (UO). The results demonstrate that the PV resource has a generally good agreement with the long-term observations in both clear-sky and cloudy-sky conditions. Further research is needed to reduce the overestimation of visible irradiances in clear sky conditions and underestimation of near-infrared irradiances in cloudy-sky conditions.

Evaluation of the PV Resource Dataset in Central and North America: Preprint

A recent effort from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has led to a new radiative transfer model, Fast All-sky Radiation Model for Solar applications with Narrowband Irradiances on Tilted surfaces (FARMS-NIT), to efficiently compute plane-of-array (POA) irradiance. This model has been implemented by the National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB) to provide photovoltaic (PV) resource over Central and North America in both narrow- and broad wavelength bands. This study conducts a comprehensive evaluation of the PV resource dataset using surface-based observations in various climate zones. The results demonstrate the PV resource has an excellent agreement with the cloudy-sky observations from thermopiles and reference cells.

Design and synthesis of biobased superhydrophobic biochar catalyst derived from Citrus sinensis for biodiesel production using inedible oil feedstocks

In an one-pot in situ trans/esterification of low-grade feedstocks, the simultaneous presence of triglycerides (TAGs) and free fatty acids (FFAs) presents a dual catalytic challenge. While TAGs undergo transesterification to form biodiesel and glycerol, FFAs present in the feedstocks are esterified simultaneously, producing water as a by-product. This water can deactivate acid catalysts by interacting with their active sites, reducing catalytic efficiency and reusability. To overcome this, we developed a hydrophobic sulfonic acid-functionalized biochar catalyst derived from Citrus sinensis (orange peel) via sulfonation with H 2 SO 4 and subsequent silylation using hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS). The optimized catalyst exhibited a high surface area (355.09 m 2 g −1 ), sulfur content (5.33 wt%), and strong hydrophobicity (water contact angle: 154°). Compared to non-hydrophobic analogs, it showed enhanced activity and reusability (up to 10 cycles). Using response surface methodology with central composite design, a biodiesel yield of 99.1 ± 0.4% was achieved under optimal conditions. Life cycle assessment was performed to evaluate the environmental impacts of biodiesel production utilising the synthesized catalyst, considering 1000 kg of biodiesel produced as 1 functional unit. In conclusion, the recorded results showed the cumulative abiotic depletion of fossil resources over the entire biodiesel production process as 87 243.423 MJ and global warming potential as 4103.494 kg CO 2 equivalent.

Engineering acid-base active sites on an N-doped biochar catalyst for microwave-assisted biodiesel production from waste cooking oil

Acid-base bifunctional catalysts play a crucial role in converting high-free fatty acid (FFA) feedstocks into biodiesel by enabling the simultaneous esterification and transesterification of triglycerides in a single step, thereby minimizing saponification and streamlining the process. In this study, we report the design and development of a novel N-doped acid-base bifunctional biochar catalyst synthesized from renewable biomass precursors- glucose and chitosan. The catalyst’s acidic sites were introduced via surface functionalization with o-sulfobenzoic acid cyclic anhydride, grafting -SO₃H groups onto the carbon framework, while basic sites were generated from amine functionalities (-NH) derived from chitosan, yielding a robust and truly bifunctional surface. The catalyst was characterized and used for the microwave-assisted transesterification of waste cooking oil, and process optimization using response surface methodology (RSM-CCD) yielding a maximum biodiesel yield of 98.8 ± 0.4% under optimal conditions (methanol-to-oil molar ratio 20:1, catalyst loading 5.7 wt%, temperature 99 °C, and reaction time 46.6 min). The catalyst demonstrated good stability, maintaining a yield of 92.2 ± 0.4% after eight reuse cycles. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted for 1 kg of biodiesel production revealed a global warming potential of 0.85 kg CO 2 eq and human toxicity potential of 1.59 kg 1,4-DB eq, with the largest environmental contributions arising from catalyst preparation and reuse. In conclusion, this work highlights a green and circular approach to biodiesel production, combining renewable catalyst design, waste feedstock utilization, and quantitative sustainability assessment to guide future developments in sustainable catalysis and biofuel engineering.

Control of Excitonic Energy Transfer in RGB Quantum Dot:Polymer Composites for Tunable White Emission

Tint-controlled white light is crucial for both illumination systems and display applications. Here, in this study, we demonstrate solution-processed quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) featuring a red–green–blue (RGB) QD–poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composite emissive layer (EML) for tunable white electroluminescence (EL). In this composite EML, PMMA functions as a dispersion matrix that modulates the interdot spacing (d), thereby controlling Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between QDs. By adjustment of the PMMA content, the balance of R, G, and B emissions is controlled, enabling systematic and continuous tuning of the EL color from greenish to reddish white at a fixed RGB ratio and constant driving bias. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements confirm that the variation in the exciton lifetime with the PMMA fraction is the primary factor for tuning the EL color. Notably, nearly pure white EL with CIE coordinates close to (0.33, 0.33) is achieved using a diluted PMMA matrix without significant degradation of the electrical properties. Our results demonstrate d as an independent design parameter for decoupling color tuning from RGB composition and electrical operation, providing a versatile design framework for high-quality white- or tint-controlled QD-LEDs toward advanced solid-state lighting and display technologies.

Magnetic evolution induced by freezing of Ag + fluctuations in an intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide

Here, we present a comprehensive study on the magnetic evolution processes in AgCrSe 2 using both neutron scattering and theoretical calculations. Additionally, the development of magnetic short-range correlation with decoupled interlayer interactions is confirmed between 55 and 200 K. Significant magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy around 0.1 meV of Cr 3+ is identified that mainly contributes to the robust existence of the in-plane magnetic correlations in the magnetic short-order regime. Furthermore, the indirect superexchange interactions through Cr-Se-Ag-Se-Cr path between the adjacent CrSe 6 octahedral layers is also demonstrated. In combination with the mutual coupling among multiple degrees of freedom (spin, phonon, lattice, and dipole), we reveal the key role of the freezing of Ag + fluctuations in preventing interlayer exchange interactions from decoupling.
