Hydrology Copilot: A Cloud-Native Ai System for Hydrological Data Analysis

The emergence of AI-driven Earth observation systems promises to broaden access to petabyte-scale geospatial data beyond domain specialists. However, translating this vision into operational scientific infrastructure requires addressing fundamental challenges in data virtualization, code transparency, and domain-specific reasoning. We present Hydrology Copilot, a cloud-native AI framework for natural-language-driven analysis of Earth observation data. To demonstrate operational capabilities at scale, we implement the system using NASA's North American Land Data Assimilation System version 3 (NLDAS-3), which provides surface meteorological forcing and land-surface model output across North and Central America at 1-km resolution, from which drought diagnostics are derived. The system integrates five core contributions: (1) scalable data virtualization using Kerchunk-based cloud optimized access, achieving a 1.5 to 4.6 times improvement in I/O latency across benchmark queries spanning regional single-day extractions (4.6 times speedup) to continental monthly aggregations (1.5 times speedup); (2) transparent code generation through Microsoft Azure AI Foundry agents that expose executable Python workflows for scientific verification; (3) persistent conversational memory enabling multi-turn analytical discourse across sessions; (4) intelligent query validation that enforces dataset boundaries and resolves ambiguous requests before execution; and (5) a multi-agent architecture coordinating query parsing, code generation, and visualization. We evaluate the system through drought-monitoring workflows, demonstrating reliable code generation, accurate results validated against reference computations and the operational U.S. Drought Monitor, and efficient operation across increasingly complex tasks. By bridging natural-language interfaces with rigorous hydrological analysis, Hydrology Copilot advances beyond proof-of-concept demonstrations to provide a deployable framework for operational Earth science applications.

Stabilization Of The CN 3 5− Anion In Recoverable High‐pressure Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) Oxoguanidinates

Abstract A series of isostructural Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) oxoguanidinates was synthesized under high‐pressure (25–54 GPa) high‐temperature (2000–3000 K) conditions in laser‐heated diamond anvil cells. The crystal structure of this novel class of compounds was determined via synchrotron single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) as well as corroborated by X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) solids are composed of the hitherto unknown CN 3 5− guanidinate anion—deprotonated guanidine. Changes in unit cell volumes and compressibility of Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) compounds are found to be dictated by the lanthanide contraction phenomenon. Decompression experiments show that Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions. The stabilization of the CN 3 5− guanidinate anion at ambient conditions provides new opportunities in inorganic and organic synthetic chemistry.

Thermal partition function of $$ {J}_3{\overline{J}}_3 $$ deformed AdS3

Abstract We derive a compact formula for the one-loop, bosonic string partition function of Euclideanized$$ {J}_3{\overline{J}}_3 $$ J 3 J ¯ 3 deformedAdS 3 with periodic Euclidean time as an integral transform of the partition function of the undeformed EuclideanizedAdS 3 . Such a deformation is interpretable as an irrelevant “single-trace$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformation” of the boundary. We will do this by first establishing a formal procedure to compute a worldsheet torus zero point function for an exactly marginal$$ J\overline{J} $$ J J ¯ deformation of a sigma model with U(1) L × U(1) R global symmetry. We then describe how this procedure is implemented on SL(2,R) sigma model and its Euclidean continuation. Finally, we describe the embedding of the deformed SL(2,R) torus amplitude into critical string theory and interpret the result as the leading perturbative contribution to the thermal partition function of the deformed theory.

In situ electric field X-ray total scattering reveals composition-dependent electromechanical strain mechanisms in (1 − x )BiFe 2/8 Ti 3/8 Mg 3/8 O 3 – x PbTiO 3 ceramics

Ferroelectric materials find many applications in energy and aerospace industries. A major challenge for ferroelectric materials is maintaining their properties at elevated temperatures. The (1 − x )BiFe 2/8 Ti 3/8 Mg 3/8 O 3 – x PbTiO 3 (BFTM–xPT) ferroelectric solid solution is a promising candidate for high-temperature applications as it has a high piezoelectric response while also maintaining its ferroelectric phase until a high Curie temperature (T C ) of 650 °C. In this work, we investigate the piezoelectric mechanism in BFTM–xPT, a novel high-T C ferroelectric ceramic. To elucidate the origin of its enhanced piezoelectric performance, relative to other piezoceramics of similar T C , in situ electric field X-ray total scattering experiments were performed. Total scattering combines Bragg scattering (diffraction) and diffuse scattering (pair distribution function), providing insight on various length scales. With information spanning different length scales, extrinsic contributions (i.e., domain wall motion and interphase boundary motion) can be separated from intrinsic contributions (i.e., piezoelectric lattice strain). We show that, for compositions within the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB, x = 0.325), the piezoelectric response is dominated by intrinsic piezoelectric lattice strain, whereas outside the MPB (x = 0.375) the major component of the piezoelectric response is from extrinsic mechanisms including an electric-field-induced phase transition and tetragonal domain wall motion. This article reveals that the origin of piezoelectric response in BFTM–xPT is composition-dependent and shows that high-performance materials may also be located outside the MPB. These findings can help guide material design to optimize properties for specific applications.

Photovoltage behaviour of p-Sb 2 S 3 photocathodes for hydrogen evolution: effect of n-In 2 S 3 passivation layers

The 1.76 eV band gap of antimony(iii) sulphide (Sb 2 S 3 ) makes this semiconductor material a promising light absorber for photoelectrochemical water splitting, but scalable fabrication approaches to efficient devices are still lacking. Here we show that compact Sb 2 S 3 films on FTO can be obtained by electrochemical growth from aqueous colloidal sulphur and antimony trichloride solutions, followed by mild annealing. These films can be converted into hydrogen evolution photocathodes after coating with In 2 S 3 passivation layers and the addition of Pt proton reduction co-catalysts. For the first time, vibrating Kelvin probe surface photovoltage (VKP-SPV) spectroscopy is used to observe the carrier dynamics in such photoelectrodes. While the bare Sb 2 S 3 films suffer from high surface recombination rates and poor electron extraction, the In 2 S 3 overlayer is found to raise the photovoltage and cathodic photocurrent density, due to passivation of surface defects and formation of a p–n heterojunction. In thick In 2 S 3 films, these benefits are offset by shading and slow electron transfer. Also, we find that O 2 strongly affects the band bending in the Sb 2 S 3 –air and In 2 S 3 –air junctions and their photovoltage. The optimised devices evolve H 2 at 77.5% Faradaic efficiency and with 0.084% applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) at 0.12 V vs. RHE. The low ABPE value is attributed to Sb 2 S 3 sub-bandgap defects visible in SPV spectra, the random orientation of Sb 2 S 3 crystallites in the films, which inhibits charge transport, the absence of crystal facets of Sb 2 S 3 , and a detrimental Schottky junction at the FTO|Sb 2 S 3 interface.

Manipulating Na/TM Ratio‐Driven Structural Heterogeneity of O3‐NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 Cathode for High‐Voltage Sodium‐Ion Batteries

The stability of O3-type NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 under high-voltage cycling is dictated by how synthesis encodes lattice strain and redox heterogeneity. Here, in this study, the role of Na:TM stoichiometry is systematically resolved by tuning the NaOH:precursor ratio during solid-state synthesis. The stoichiometric condition (Na:TM = 1.00) yields minimized microstrain, enabling uniform O3–P3 phase evolution and homogeneous multi-metal redox with preserved octahedral symmetry. In contrast, Na-excess compositions inherit disordered intermediates and heterogeneous distortion fields that trigger abrupt multiphase transitions and promote localized charge redistribution. In situ XRD captures the divergence in phase-transition pathways, TXM resolves particle-level redox heterogeneity, and XANES corroborates a stronger and more reversible Fe redox contribution at stoichiometry, shifting to diminished Fe participation and spatially inhomogeneous redox at higher Na content. These results establish Na:TM stoichiometry as a critical synthesis parameter controlling both structural coherence and redox stability. Electrochemically, the stoichiometric composition exhibits smooth voltage profiles with minimal polarization growth and retains nearly 80% of its initial capacity after 100 cycles even at an extended 4.2 V cutoff, whereas Na-excess compositions show significantly reduced initial coulombic efficiency and rapid voltage fade. Precise stoichiometric tuning provides a scalable route to defect-suppressed O3 frameworks, enabling structurally resilient, high-voltage sodium-layered cathodes.

NOx mediated formation of ε – UO 3 during thermal decomposition of uranyl nitrate hexahydrate under static air conditions

The thermal decomposition of uranyl nitrate hexahydrate in air at temperatures of 650 – 800 °C is expected to yield α – U 3 O 8 through intermediate UO 3 phases. Here, n this study, Raman spectroscopy complimented by powder X-ray diffraction revealed the unexpected formation of ε – UO 3 as an accompanying phase during thermal decomposition of UNH at 700 °C under static air conditions. Experiments demonstrated that ε – UO 3 does not form during the initial ramp up stage nor during the high temperature heating period; but instead forms during the cooling stage between 250 – 400 °C. Additional experiments revealed that UNH initially decomposes through an amorphous UO 3 intermediate prior to α – U 3 O 8 formation. Attempts to bypass the U 3 O 8 precursor in the formation of ε – UO 3 were unsuccessful, supporting the necessity of U 3 O 8 (α – U 3 O 8 in this study) in the formation of ε – UO 3 . The observed phase evolution is proposed to result from the NOx species generated during UNH thermal decomposition, which create localized oxidizing conditions within the furnace under static air conditions. Furthermore, a predominantly phase pure ε – UO 3 was synthesized under static air conditions through the addition of an extra plateau at 250 °C during the cooling step. These findings demonstrate the importance of gas-phase chemistry and cooling conditions in uranium oxide phase evolution and provide additional insight into ε – UO 3 formation pathways.

Development and application of a 3-D geometry/mass model for LDEF satellite ionizing radiation assessments

A computer model of the three dimensional geometry and material distributions for the LDEF spacecraft, experiment trays, and, for selected trays, the components of experiments within a tray was developed for use in ionizing radiation assessments. The model is being applied to provide 3-D shielding distributions around radiation dosimeters to aid in data interpretation, particularly in assessing the directional properties of the radiation exposure. Also, the model has been interfaced with radiation transport codes for 3-D dosimetry response predictions and for calculations related to determining the accuracy of trapped proton and cosmic ray environment models. The methodology is described used in developing the 3-D LDEF model and the level of detail incorporated. Currently, the trays modeled in detail are F2, F8, and H12 and H3. Applications of the model which are discussed include the 3-D shielding distributions around various dosimeters, the influence of shielding on dosimetry responses, and comparisons of dose predictions based on the present 3-D model vs those from 1-D geometry model approximations used in initial estimates.
