An ODE-Enabled Distributed Transient Stability Analysis for Networked Microgrids

Networked microgrid (NMG) exhibits noteworthy resiliency and flexibility benefits for the mutual support from neighboring microgrids. With high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the associated controls, the transient stability analysis of NMGs is of critical significance. To address the issues of computation burdens and privacy in the centralized transient analysis, this paper devises an ordinary differential equation (ODE)-enabled distributed transient stability (DTS) methodology for NMGs. First, an ODE-based microgrid model is established to capture the dynamics in the droop control of DERs as well as network and load. Further, a distributed DTS is devised for the ODE representation of an NMG, allowing a privacy-preserving transient analysis of each microgrid while accurately reconstructing the frequency dynamics under droop controls in all DERs. In conclusion, extensive tests are performed to verify the validity of the ODE-based microgrid model through both dynamic response and eigenvalue analysis, and the efficacy of the DTS algorithm in simulating the large signal responses and the frequent fluctuations in NMG.

Networked Microgrid Optimal Design and Operations Tool: Regulatory and Business Environment Study

Microgrids aim to increase the resilience of the electric supply to the loads within the microgrid through the ability to disconnect from the distribution utility in the event of a power outage and by supplying power to the microgrid loads from a combination of multiple power generation assets and storage systems. Microgrids can also improve reliability at the distribution level by reducing the load on the system under stress conditions. Networking two or more microgrids has the potential to increase reliability and resilience at a reduced cost by taking advantage of economies of scale and increasing the diversity of the generation assets and loads. This report is part of a collaborative effort among several U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories to develop a networked microgrid (NMG) Optimal Design and Operations (OD&O) tool. This tool addresses the goal defined in the Grid Modernization Multi-Year Program Plan to develop a suite of tools that addresses functional requirements for system optimal design and the operations of NMGs.

Analytical Radiochemical Method Development for Mark 18A Program

The Savannah River National Laboratory Nuclear Measurements Group was tasked by the Mark 18A Program team with developing three analytical characterization methods. These methods will support process and waste characterization of the Mark 18A program material. While methods already existed for most analytes of interest to the Mark 18A program team, the Nuclear Measurements Group developed and refined methods to quantify the Cf isotopes, 107 Pd, and 121m Sn. The results of that effort are presented in this work. Methods were successfully developed to characterize the Mark 18A samples for the needed isotopes and the NMG is ready to receive Mark 18A program samples.

Analysis of Radioactive 65 Zn Contamination using 3D Position Sensitive CdZnTe Detectors

SRNL NMG Goal: In collaboration with ORNL, the aim is to identify and explore innovative technology opportunities that accelerate disposition, reduce life cycle costs, minimize worker radiation exposure, and improve worker safety and minimize program risks. • This process will include 3 glovebox systems that require personnel to dilute and package the plutonium for safe storage at WIPP. • For holdup monitoring and verification, gamma ray spectroscopy and imaging are the methods employed to achieve real time analysis of the plutonium waste. 2

Higher Order Time Integration Schemes for the Unsteady Navier-Stokes Equations on Unstructured Meshes

The efficiency gains obtained using higher-order implicit Runge-Kutta schemes as compared with the second-order accurate backward difference schemes for the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations are investigated. Three different algorithms for solving the nonlinear system of equations arising at each timestep are presented. The first algorithm (NMG) is a pseudo-time-stepping scheme which employs a non-linear full approximation storage (FAS) agglomeration multigrid method to accelerate convergence. The other two algorithms are based on Inexact Newton's methods. The linear system arising at each Newton step is solved using iterative/Krylov techniques and left preconditioning is used to accelerate convergence of the linear solvers. One of the methods (LMG) uses Richardson's iterative scheme for solving the linear system at each Newton step while the other (PGMRES) uses the Generalized Minimal Residual method. Results demonstrating the relative superiority of these Newton's methods based schemes are presented. Efficiency gains as high as 10 are obtained by combining the higher-order time integration schemes with the more efficient nonlinear solvers.
