A global analysis strategy to resolve neutrino NSI degeneracies with scattering and oscillation data

Neutrino non-standard interactions (NSI) with the first generation of standard model fermions can span a parameter space of large dimension and exhibit degeneracies that cannot be broken by a single class of experiment. Oscillation experiments, together with neutrino scattering experiments, can merge their observations into a highly informational dataset to combat this problem. We consider combining neutrino-electron and neutrino-nucleus scattering data from the Borexino and COHERENT experiments, including a projection for the upcoming coherent neutrino scattering measurement at the CENNS-10 liquid argon detector. We extend the reach of these data sets over the NSI parameter space with projections for neutrino scattering at a future multi-ton scale dark matter detector and future oscillation measurements from atmospheric neutrinos at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform this global anal- ysis, we adopt a novel approach using the copula method, utilized to combine posterior information from different experiments with a large, generalized set of NSI parameters. We find that the contributions from DUNE and a dark matter detector to the Borexino and COHERENT fits can improve constraints on the electron and quark NSI parameters by up to a factor of 2 to 3, even when relatively many NSI parameters are left free to vary in the analysis.

Probing BSM Oscillatory Signals with the DUNE Detectors and the LBNF Neutrino Beam: NSI and Sterile Neutrino Sensitivities

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a flagship long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment under construction in the U.S. With a 1,300 km distance between its Near Detector (ND) and Far Detector (FD), the world’s most intense LBNF (Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility) neutrino beam, and high-resolution LArTPC (Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber) detectors, DUNE will measure the neutrino oscillation parameters with unprecedented precision. In addition to the determination of the neutrino mass ordering and the potential discovery of Charge-Parity violation in the leptonic sector, DUNE's capabilities present a unique opportunity for probing Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics signals with neutrinos. Examples of BSM physics manifestations include the presence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter, or the existence of sterile neutrinos that mix with 3-Flavor neutrinos. In this study, we present a joint ND+FD fit to simulated data assessing DUNE's sensitivity to probing neutrino NSI, as well as scenarios including sterile neutrino mixing.

Expanding NSI searches at NOvA

NOvA is an accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino experiment with two functionally equivalent detectors, designed to study neutrino oscillations. NOvA has also been able to look for signals of new physics like non-standard interactions with matter, setting constraints on the parameters governing that beyond-standard neutrino-physics phenomenon. With data collection progressing, and an upgraded analysis including new data samples and improved understanding of the systematics, we are able to further advance our quest of constraining new physics. Here we will present an update on the analysis status of NOvA on the NSI parameters when the addition of more data and a set of low-energy electron neutrino events not considered in our previous analysis.

Solar neutrinos and the strongest oscillation constraints on scalar NSI

Scalar non-standard neutrino interactions (sNSI) is a scenario where neutrinos can develop a medium dependent contribution to their mass due to a new scalar mediator. This scenario differs from the commonly discussed vector mediator case in that the oscillation effect scales with density rather than density and neutrino energy. Thus the strongest oscillation constraint comes from solar neutrinos which experience the largest density in a neutrino oscillation experiment. We derive constraints on all the sNSI parameters as well as the absolute neutrino mass scale by combining solar and reactor data and find solar neutrinos to be > 1 order of magnitude more sensitive to sNSI than terrestrial probes such as long-baseline experiments.

Charged-current non-standard neutrino interactions at Daya Bay

The full data set of the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is used to probe the effect of the charged current non-standard interactions (CC-NSI) on neutrino oscillation experiments. Two different approaches are applied and constraints on the corresponding CC-NSI parameters are obtained with the neutrino flux taken from the Huber-Mueller model with a 5% uncertainty. For the quantum mechanics-based approach (QM-NSI), the constraints on the CC-NSI parameters $ϵ_{eα}$ and $ϵ^s_{eα}$ are extracted with and without the assumption that the effects of the new physics are the same in the production and detection processes, respectively. The approach based on the weak effective field theory (WEFT-NSI) deals with four types of CC-NSI represented by the parameters [ε X ] eα . For both approaches, the results for the CC-NSI parameters are shown for cases with various fixed values of the CC-NSI and the Dirac CP-violating phases, and when they are allowed to vary freely. We find that constraints on the QM-NSI parameters $ϵ_{eα}$ and $ϵ^s_{eα}$ from the Daya Bay experiment alone can reach the order O(0.01) for the former and O(0.1) for the latter, while for WEFT-NSI parameters [ε X ] eα , we obtain O(0.1) for both cases.

Non-standard interactions in radiative neutrino mass models

Models of radiative Majorana neutrino masses require new scalars and/or fermions to induce lepton-number-violating interactions. We show that these new particles also generate observable neutrino non-standard interactions (NSI) with matter. We classify radiative models as type-I or II, with type-I models containing at least one Standard Model (SM) particle inside the loop diagram generating neutrino mass, and type-II models having no SM particle inside the loop. While type-II radiative models do not generate NSI at tree-level, popular models which fall under the type-I category are shown, somewhat surprisingly, to generate observable NSI at tree-level, while being consistent with direct and indirect constraints from colliders, electroweak precision data and charged-lepton flavor violation (cLFV). We survey such models where neutrino masses arise at one, two and three loops. In the prototypical Zee model which generates neutrino masses via one-loop diagrams involving charged scalars, we find that diagonal NSI can be as large as (8%, 3.8%, 9.3%) for (ε$_{ee}$, ε$_{μμ}$, ε$_{ττ}$), while off-diagonal NSI can be at most (10$^{–3}$%, 0.56%, 0.34%) for (ε$_{eμ}$, ε$_{eτ}$, ε$_{μτ}$). In one-loop neutrino mass models using leptoquarks (LQs), (ε$_{μμ}$, ε$_{ττ}$) can be as large as (21.6%, 51.7%), while ε$_{ee}$ and (ε$_{eμ}$, ε$_{eτ}$, ε$_{μτ}$) can at most be 0.6%. Other two- and three-loop LQ models are found to give NSI of similar strength. The most stringent constraints on the diagonal NSI are found to come from neutrino oscillation and scattering experiments, while the off-diagonal NSI are mostly constrained by low-energy processes, such as atomic parity violation and cLFV. We also comment on the future sensitivity of these radiative models in long-baseline neutrino experiments, such as DUNE. While our analysis is focused on radiative neutrino mass models, it essentially covers all NSI possibilities with heavy mediators.

Non-standard neutrino interactions mediated by a light scalar at DUNE

Abstract We investigate the effect on neutrino oscillations generated by beyond-the-standard-model interactions between neutrinos and matter. Specifically, we focus on scalar-mediated non-standard interactions (NSI) whose impact fundamentally differs from that of vector-mediated NSI. Scalar NSI contribute as corrections to the neutrino mass matrix rather than the matter potential and thereby predict distinct phenomenology from the vector-mediated ones. Similar to vector-type NSI, the presence of scalar-mediated neutrino NSI can influence measurements of oscillation parameters in long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, with a notable impact on CP measurement in the case of DUNE. Our study focuses on the effect of scalar NSI on neutrino oscillations, using DUNE as an example. We introduce a model-independent parameterization procedure that enables the examination of the impact of all non-zero scalar NSI parameters simultaneously. Subsequently, we convert DUNE’s sensitivity to the NSI parameters into projected sensitivity concerning the parameters of a light scalar model. We compare these results with existing non-oscillation probes. Our findings reveal that the region of the light scalar parameter space sensitive to DUNE is predominantly excluded by non-oscillation probes, especially when considering all nonzero parameters simultaneously for DUNE.

Constraining non-standard neutrino interactions with neutral current events at long-baseline oscillation experiments

We explore, for the first time, neutral-curren t events at long-baseline experiments to constrain vector and axial-vector neutrino non-standard interactions (NSI) with quarks. We leverage the flavor dependence of NSIs to perform an oscillation analysis in the neutral- current channel. We first introduce a framework to parametrize the effect of NSI on the cross section. Then, as an example, we analyze NOvA neutral-current data which provides significantly improved constraints on the axial-vector NSI parameters ${\varepsilon}_{\mu \mu}^A$, ${\varepsilon}_{\tau \tau}^A$ and ${\varepsilon}_{e\mu}^A$. This is highly complementary to constraints from SNO data, which, differently from long-baseline neutral current data, is not sensitive to isospin conserving NSIs ${\varepsilon}_u^A$ = ${\varepsilon}_d^A$. Additionally, we disfavor large values of the diagonal vectorial NSI ${\varepsilon}_{\mu \mu}^{VV}$ and ${\varepsilon}_{\tau \tau}^V$ which originate from the LMA-Dark solution. We also highlight the complementarity between NSI searches at oscillation experiments using charged current and neutral current channels.

Search for CP-violating Neutrino Non-Standard Interactions with the NOvA Experiment

The phenomenon of neutrino oscillations is the most significant evidence in experimental particle physics that points to the existence of Physics Beyond the Standard Model, and it opened a window for several and interesting new investigations in the field of neutrino physics. Among the possibilities, Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) are an extension of the neutrino matter effect leading to a rich phenomenology. These NSI are expected to modify the propagation of neutrinos through matter. The current open questions in the neutrino oscillation model rely heavily on how neutrinos interact with matter, and NSI could induce possible effects. This talk reports the preliminary search for CP-violating NSI of neutrinos with matter at the NOvA Experiment. Data from $\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})\rightarrow\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})$ and $\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})\rightarrow\nu_{e}(\bar{\nu}_{e})$ oscillation channels are used to measure the effect of the NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{e\mu}$ or $\v arepsilon_{e\tau}$ over the 810 km baseline of the experiment.

Oscillation-independent probes of nonstandard neutrino interactions from supernovae

Extreme astrophysical environments provide unique laboratories for testing fundamental neutrino interactions. We present the first oscillation-independent astrophysical probe of nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI), using coincident neutral-current signals across diverse detectors to break degeneracies that have long limited sensitivity reach. Using self-consistent NSI supernova simulations and flavor-independent neutral-current scattering we show that anticorrelated signatures between JUNO liquid scintillator and dark matter detectors such as DARWIN/XLZD, ARGO, or RES-NOVA enable clear discrimination between NSI and flavor-conversion effects. For a Galactic supernova at Betelgeuse distance our approach enables an independent probe of neutrino-quark NSI couplings in parameter space that can reach and extend beyond current terrestrial limits. This multidetector approach enables breaking degeneracies in terrestrial searches and is broadly applicable to a wide range of upcoming experiments, establishing a new principle for testing fundamental interactions with astrophysical data.

Search for 𝐶⁢𝑃-Violating Neutrino Nonstandard Interactions with the NOvA Experiment

This Letter reports a search for charge-parity (𝐶⁢𝑃) symmetry violating nonstandard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the NOvA Experiment, and examines their effects on the determination of the standard oscillation parameters. Data from 𝜈 𝜇 ⁡($\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜇 ) → 𝜈 𝜇 ⁡($\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜇 ) and 𝜈 𝜇 ⁡($\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜇 ) → 𝜈 𝑒 ⁡( $\bar{𝜈}$ 𝑒 ) oscillation channels are used to measure the effect of the NSI parameters 𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜇 and 𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜏 . With 90% CL the magnitudes of the NSI couplings are constrained to be |𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜇 | ≲0.3 and |𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜏 | ≲ 0.4. A degeneracy at |𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜏 | ≈ 1.8 is reported, and we observe that the presence of NSI limits sensitivity to the standard 𝐶⁢𝑃 phase 𝛿 𝐶⁢𝑃 .

Probing Non-Standard Interactions in NOvA with Bayesian MCMC Methods

We present a search for non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) using NOvA's joint $\nu_e$ appearance and $\nu_\mu$ disappearance samples in both neutrino and antineutrino beam modes. A Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach is used to map the posterior distribution over NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{e\mu}$, $\varepsilon_{e\tau}$, and $\varepsilon_{\mu\tau}$, simultaneously with standard oscillation parameters. We investigate the effect of prior choice for the complex NSI parameters and present projected sensitivity to off-diagonal NSI.

Complementarity Between Neutrino Neutral and Charged Current Events in the Search for New Physics

At long-baseline neutrino experiments, neutral-current (NC) events accumulate in large numbers but are seldom exploited for new physics searches. We demonstrate their potential using non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) with quarks as a case study. Charged-current (CC) analyses constrain NSI through matter effects on neutrino propagation, which probe almost exclusively the isoscalar combination of up- and down-quark couplings; the orthogonal isovector combination is suppressed by a factor of $\sim$100. Because NSI also modify NC cross sections in a flavor-dependent way, NC events become sensitive to oscillations: the far-to-near detector ratio acquires a dependence on the beam's flavor composition that probes both isoscalar and isovector couplings with comparable weight. Using existing NOvA data and DUNE projections, we derive the first bounded constraints on isovector NSI from a long-baseline experiment and show that combining CC and NC measurements resolves the individual quark couplings, breaking a degeneracy that persists in either analysis alone.

Constraints on flavor-diagonal non-standard neutrino interactions from Borexino Phase-II

The Borexino detector measures solar neutrino fluxes via neutrino-electron elastic scattering. Observed spectra are determined by the solar-$\nu_{e}$ survival probability $P_{ee}(E)$, and the chiral couplings of the neutrino and electron. Some theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate the existence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI's) which modify the chiral couplings and $P_{ee}(E)$. In this paper, we search for such NSI's, in particularly neutral-current-like interactions that modify the $\nu_e - e$ and $\nu_\tau - e$ couplings, using Borexino Phase II data. Standard Solar Model predictions of the solar neutrino fluxes for both high- and low-metallicity assumptions are considered. No indication of new physics is found at the level of sensitivity of the detector and constraints on the parameters of the NSI's are placed. In addition, with the same dataset the value of $\sin^2\theta_W$ is obtained with a precision comparable to that achieved in reactor antineutrino experiments.

Cosmic structure strikes back: The elimination of vector-mediated nonstandard interaction models as a mechanism for sterile neutrino dark matter production

We revisit sterile neutrino production enabled by nonstandard interactions (NSIs) among active neutrinos mediated by new bosons. We focus on vector mediators, including neutrinophilic, gauged 𝐿 𝜇 −𝐿 𝜏 , and 𝐵−𝐿 realizations, that modify in-medium dispersion and scattering, thereby altering the active-sterile conversion history. Building on a novel production framework with NSI thermal potentials and collision integrals, we compute nonthermal phase-space distributions across sterile neutrino mixing and NSI parameters and map each point to an equivalent thermal warm dark matter particle mass 𝑚 th via linear theory transfer function fitting with the cosmological structure formation Boltzmann solver. This enables a direct reinterpretation of state-of-the-art structure formation limits from Milky Way satellites, strong lensing, and the Lyman-𝛼 forest. These limits, in conjunction with x-ray decay searches, as well as results from a wide variety of particle physics experiments allow for a more complete examination of these models. We find that these vector-mediated models are ruled out when the full combination of current constraints, listed above, are taken into account. NSI scalar-mediated models and models with low reheating temperatures remain viable.

Impact of improved energy resolution on DUNE sensitivity to neutrino non-standard interactions

The full physics potential of the next-generation Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is still being explored. In particular, there have been some recent studies on the possibility of improving DUNE’s neutrino energy reconstruction. The main motivation is that a better determination of the neutrino energy in an event-by-event basis will translate into an improved measurement of the Dirac C P phase and other neutrino oscillation parameters. To further motivate studies and improvements on the neutrino energy reconstruction, we evaluate the impact of energy resolution at DUNE on an illustrative new physics scenario, viz. non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter. We show that a better energy resolution in comparison to the ones given in the DUNE conceptual and technical design reports may significantly enhance the experimental sensitivity to NSI, particularly when degeneracies are present. While a better reconstruction of the first oscillation peak helps disentangling standard C P effects from those coming from NSIs, we find that the second oscillation peak also plays a nontrivial role in improving DUNE’s sensitivity.

Neuronally-derived tau is increased in experienced breachers and is associated with neurobehavioral symptoms

Military and law enforcement breachers are exposed to many low-level blasts during their training and occupational experiences in which they detonate explosives to force entry into secured structures. There is a concern that exposure to these repetitive blast events in career breachers could result in cumulative neurological effects. This study aimed to determine concentrations of neurofilament light (NF-L), tau, and amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) in serum and in neuronal-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) in an experienced breacher population, and to examine biomarker associations with neurobehavioral symptoms. Thirty-four participants enrolled in the study: 20 experienced breachers and 14 matched military or civilian law enforcement controls. EV tau concentrations were significantly elevated in experienced breachers (0.3301 ± 0.5225) compared to controls (–0.4279 ± 0.7557; F = 10.43, p = 0.003). No statistically significant changes were observed in EV levels of NF-L or Aβ42 or in serum levels of NF-L, tau, or Aβ42 (p’s > 0.05). Elevated EV tau concentrations correlated with increased Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) score in experienced breachers (r = 0.596, p = 0.015) and predicted higher NSI score (F(1,14) = 7.702, p = 0.015, R 2 = 0.355). These findings show that neuronal-derived EV concentrations of tau are significantly elevated and associated with neurobehavioral symptoms in this sample of experienced breachers who have a history of many low-level blast exposures.
