Imbalanced spin coupling in the copper hexamer compounds A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 ( A 2 = Na 2 , NaK, K 2 )

The minerals A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 (A 2 = Na 2 ,NaK,K 2 ) constitute quantum spin systems with copper hexamers as basic structural units. Strong intrahexamer spin couplings give rise to an effective triplet ground state. Weak interhexamer spin couplings are responsible for two-dimensional long-range magnetic order in the (b,c) plane below 3.0 < T c < 4.7K. We investigated the magnetic excitations at T = 1.5 K by inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Furthermore, the INS technique was based on the observation of wave vector dependent slices in reciprocal space in order to selectively probe the magnetic signals in different Brillouin zones with different weight. Due to the imbalance of the spin couplings, the data analysis relies on a model in which the interhexamer spin couplings are treated perturbatively on top of the exact S = 1 ground state. The interhexamer spin couplings turn out to be ferromagnetic.

Structural and thermal properties of Na 2 Mn(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O and Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O

The title compounds were prepared via a wet chemistry route and their crystal structures were determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. Na 2 Mn(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O crystallizes with a monoclinic symmetry, space group P2 1 /c, with a = 5.5415(2), b = 8.3447(3), c = 11.2281(3) Å, β = 100.172(1)°, V = 511.05(3) Å 3 and Z = 2. Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O also crystallizes with a monoclinic symmetry, space group P2 1 /c, with a = 12.5050(8), b = 6.4812(4), c = 10.0210(6) Å, β = 106.138(2)°, V = 780.17(8) Å3 and Z = 2. Na 2 Mn(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O is a new member of the blödite family of compounds, whereas Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O is isostructural with Na 2 Mg(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O. The structure of Na 2 Mn(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O is built up of [Mn(SO 4 ) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] 2– building blocks connected through moderate O–H…O hydrogen bonds with the sodium atoms occupying the large tunnels along the a axis and the manganese atom lying on an inversion center, whereas the structure of Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O is built up of [Ni(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ and [Na 2 (SO 4 ) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] 2– layers. These layers which are parallel to the (100) plane are interconnected through moderate O–H…O hydrogen bonds. Here, the thermal gravimetric- and the powder X-ray diffraction-analyzes showed that only the nickel phase was almost pure. At a temperature above 300 °C, all the water molecules evaporated and a structural phase transition from P2 1 /c-Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O to C2/c-Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 was observed. C2/c-Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 is thermally more stable than Na 2 Fe(SO 4 ) 2 and therefore it would be suitable as the positive electrode for sodium ion batteries if a stable electrolyte at high voltage is developed.

Feldspar-based CaO–K 2 O–Na 2 O–BaO silicate glass sealant for solid oxide fuel cells

Sealants have been widely used in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), and glass sealants have shown considerable potentials due to their low leakage rate. In this paper, we report a type of feldspar-based glass sealant, mainly composed of CaO-K 2 O-Na 2 O-BaO, with a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 10.11×10 -6 k -1 , a glass transition temperature at 528°C, and a softening temperature at 573°C. Using this sealant to seal anode-supported SOFCs, the open-circuit voltage (OCV) remains at 1.08V after five thermal cycles and 50-hour aging at 750°C, close to the theoretical OCV value. The SEM and EDS reveal stable interface between the glass sealant and the anode, indicating excellent performance of the CaO-K 2 O-Na 2 O-BaO glass sealant for SOFC sealing applications.

Long-range three-dimensional magnetic structures of the spin S =1 hexamer cluster fedotovite-like A 2 Cu 3 O ( SO 4 ) 3 ( A 2 = K 2 , NaK, Na 2 ): A neutron diffraction study

The crystal and magnetic structures of the spin S = 1 hexamer cluster fedotovite-like A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 (A 2 = K 2 , NaK, Na 2 ) were studied by neutron powder diffraction at temperatures 1.6–290 K. The crystal structures in all compounds are well refined in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The basic magnetic units of the compounds are copper hexamers, which are coupled by weak superexchange interactions giving rise to three-dimensional long-range magnetic order below 3.0 < T N < 4.7 K. We have found that for A 2 = K 2 and NaK the propagation vector of the magnetic structure is k = [0,0,0], and the coupling of the Cu hexamers is ferromagnetic (FM) along the ab diagonal and antiferromagnetic along the bc diagonal. In contrast, for A = Na the propagation vector is k = [0,1,0], and the Cu hexamers are coupled antiferromagnetically (AFM) along the ab diagonal. Further, the hexamers are formed by three Cu pairs arranged along the b axis. The calculated spin expectation values $\langle s \rangle$ for the simplest symmetric spin Hamiltonian (obtained from inelastic neutron spectroscopy) of the isolated hexamers in the mean field amounted to $\langle s \rangle$ = 3/8 for the side spins Cu1 and Cu2 and $\langle s \rangle$ = 1/4 for Cu3 in the middle. The Cu spins are FM coupled in pairs and AFM between neighboring pairs. The experimental magnetic moments of the Cu 2+ ions turn out to be not completely collinear due to spin frustrations within the weak interhexamer interactions. The sizes of magnetic moments of Cu in the hexamers determined from the diffraction data are in fair agreement with the calculated values.

Comparison of Na 2 SO 4 , K 2 SO 4 and Na 2 SO 4 -K 2 SO 4 deposit induced hot corrosion of a β-NiAl coating

Here, hot corrosion behaviour of a β-NiAl coating induced by Na 2 SO 4 , K 2 SO 4 , and Na 2 SO 4 -K 2 SO 4 deposits was investigated at 700 °C in air + 300 ppm SO 2 . To provide an insight into the corrosion mechanisms, phase equilibria of the Na 2 SO 4 -K 2 SO 4 -NiO-SO 3 system were calculated using an in-house developed thermodynamic database. The attack rates and morphologies could be correlated with the deposit compositions and their reactions with oxides. K 2 SO 4 and Na 2 SO 4 -K 2 SO 4 deposits are more corrosive than Na 2 SO 4 . This is attributed to a reduction of the melting temperature of the deposit and the formation of Ni-containing mixed sulphate phases in the presence of K 2 SO 4 .

High-temperature Raman spectroscopy of K 2 Ca(CO 3 ) 2 bütschliite and Na 2 Ca 2 (CO 3 ) 3 shortite

Raman spectra of Na 2 Ca 2 (CO 3 ) 3 shortite and K 2 Ca(CO 3 ) 2 bütschliite were measured to 715°C and 740°C respectively, under vacuum. The vibrational spectra demonstrate that shortite converts to nyerereite (Na 2 Ca(CO 3 ) 2 ) and calcite at 535°C. This assemblage is stable to ~700°C, where nyerereite begins to decompose. Bütschliite converts to the isochemical phase fairchildite at 570°C, which is stable to 665°C, where it decomposes to an assemblage of K 2 CO 3 and CaO. The variation of anharmonicity between different vibrational modes of each of the low temperature phases is assessed, and these yield insights into inter-carbonate group couplings. In conclusion, both fairchildite and nyerereite exhibit spectral features consistent with extensive disordering.

Radiation effects on the structure and alteration behavior of an SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 –B 2 O 3 –Na 2 O glass

As borosilicate glasses are used in many countries to immobilize fission products and minor actinides after spent fuel reprocessing before storage in a deep geological repository, assessing that their chemical durability is of paramount importance. Here, pristine and preirradiated (952 MeV, 136Xe) SiO 2 –B2O 3 –Al2O 3 –Na 2 O glasses with the same molar ratios as in the French SON68 and ISG glasses have been subjected to aqueous corrosion in deionized water and in silica-saturated solution to measure the initial and longer term alteration rates. Pristine and preirradiated glasses corrode following the same mechanisms, but the preirradiation has a strong impact on the initial dissolution rate (increase by a factor of 5.6), and on the alteration layer depth in silica-saturated conditions (by two- to threefolds). The later result is related to the formation of a more porous, less passivating gel on the preirradiated glass specimen. Using both experimental spectroscopies (NMR, IR, and SFG) and classical molecular dynamics, the radiation effects on the glass structure and water diffusion have been assessed. After preirradiation, the density and the polymerization degree of the glass decrease, whereas the topological disorder increases. In consequence, water diffusion accelerates. These observations allow to correlate the radiation impact on the alteration behavior to the structural changes.

Magnetic structure, excitations and short-range order in honeycomb Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6

Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 has a layered hexagonal structure with a honeycomb lattice constituted by Ni 2+ and a chiral charge distribution of Na + that resides between the Ni layers. In the present work, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 is confirmed at TN˜ 27 K, and further, it is found to be robust up to 8 T magnetic field and 1.2 GPa external pressure; and, without any frequency-dependence. Slight deviations from nominal Na-content (up to 5%) does not seem to influence the magnetic transition temperature, TN. Isothermal magnetization curves remain almost linear up to 13 T. Our analysis of neutron diffraction data shows that the magnetic structure of Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 is faithfully described by a model consisting of two phases described by the commensurate wave vectors vec kc, (0.5 0 0) and (0.5 0 0.5), with an additional short-range order component incorporated in to the latter phase. Consequently, a zig-zag long-range ordered magnetic phase of Ni 2+ results in the compound, mixed with a short-range ordered phase, which is supported by our specific heat data. Theoretical computations based on density functional theory (DFT) predict predominantly in-plane magnetic exchange interactions that conform to a J1-J2-J3 model with a strong J3 term. The computationally predicted parameters lead to a reliable estimate for TN and the experimentally observed zig-zag magnetic structure. A spin wave excitation in Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 at E ˜ 5 meV at T = 5 K is mapped out through inelastic neutron scattering experiments, which is reproduced by linear spin wave theory calculations using the J values from our computations. Our specific heat data and inelastic neutron scattering data strongly indicate the presence of short-range spin correlations, at T > TN, stemming from incipient antiferromagnetic clusters.

Salt Effects on Li-Ion Exchange Kinetics of Na 2 Mg 2 P 3 O 9 N: Systematic In Situ Synchrotron Diffraction Studies

The kinetics and thermodynamics of solid-state ion exchange of Li+ into Na2Mg2P3O9N were investigated using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction methods for a series of Li-containing salts, allowing systematic trends with general applicability to ion exchange reactions to be elucidated. The collection of data for a wide range of reaction conditions was enabled through the use of a novel multiwell sample environment which leverages the ability of the synchrotron beamline to rapidly (similar to 1 s) collect high-quality data suitable for monitoring reaction progress. From these data, it was possible to resolve the influence of salt choice and salt concentration on the ion exchange reaction kinetics. Furthermore, by carrying out experiments at different temperatures, initial estimates of activation energies were obtained. It was generally found that the ion exchange reaction kinetics strongly depended on the salt chosen as the ion source rather than being primarily determined by the ion mobility of the ceramic.

Integrated CO 2 capture and hydrogenation in presence of Ru–Na 2 ZrO 3 : An in-situ study

Integrated CO 2 capture and conversion (ICCC) by hydrogenation is a promising strategy to utilize carbon dioxide and this work add to the effort to elucidate the catalytic hydrogenation mechanism using Ru based dual functional materials (DFM). Ru-Na 2 ZrO 3 DFMs, obtained through different wet methods, were evaluated for the first time and the relationship between Ru and support systematically investigated. The thermally stable and cyclable Ru-Na 2 ZrO 3 -a (obtained without filtration step) exhibited CO 2 conversion of 80% and a higher yield of CO at 400°C compared to previously tested DFM, while the Na depleted/Zr rich Ru-Na 2 ZrO 3 -b resulted in 90% selectivity to CH 4 with yield of 1.11 mmol/g at the same temperature. The in-situ experiments have provided conclusive evidence showing that CO 2 hydrogenation on the two Ru DFMs is fundamentally different. In Ru-Na 2 ZrO 3 -a, the monoclinic Na 2 ZrO 3 support acted as the active centre (not as promoter) for CO 2 bridging binding and hydrogenation to CH 4 at the metal-support interface through associative formate pathway with limited further reduction to methane due to lack of H 2 spillover from the small and well dispersed Ru NPs, which results in CO desorption. Conversely, abundant clusters of larger Ru NPs in Ru-Na 2 ZrO 3 -b, led to CH 4 production due to co-existent Ru on-top direct dissociation of CO 2 (preferential) and monodentate formate adsorption and further methanation. Alkali zirconates doped metals, and their synthesis method could thus play a crucial role in designing tuneable heterogeneous catalysis in C 1 chemistry, which could significantly benefit the environment by lowering CO 2 levels, encouraging cleaner industrial practices, supporting a circular economy, and converting waste CO 2 into valuable products.

Signatures of Non-universal Quantum Dynamics of Ultracold Chemical Reactions of Polar Alkali Dimer Molecules with Alkali Metal Atoms: Li( 2 S) + NaLi( a 3 Σ + ) → Na( 2 S) + Li 2 ( a 3 Σ u + )

Ultracold chemical reactions of weakly bound triplet-state alkali metal dimer molecules have recently attracted much experimental interest. Here we perform rigorous quantum scattering calculations with a new ab initio potential energy surface to explore the chemical reaction of spin-polarized NaLi(a 3 Σ + ) and Li( 2 S) to form Li 2 (a 3 Σ u + ) and Na( 2 S). The reaction is exothermic and proceeds readily at ultralow temperatures. Significantly, we observe strong sensitivity of the total reaction rate to small variations of the three-body part of the Li 2 Na interaction at short range, which we attribute to a relatively small number of open Li 2 (a 3 Σ u + ) product channels populated in the reaction. This provides the first signature of highly non-universal dynamics seen in rigorous quantum reactive scattering calculations of an ultracold exothermic insertion reaction involving a polar alkali dimer molecule, opening up the possibility of probing microscopic interactions in atom+molecule collision complexes via ultracold reactive scattering experiments.

Synthesis of a planar, multicomponent catalytic surface of Na 2 CO 3 /MnO

Here, O 2 adsorption on MnO(100) precovered with sodium (Na) multilayers was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Deposition of Na multilayers leads to a first monolayer of oxidic Na followed by metallic Na island growth. XPS results for the oxidation of the metallic Na islands indicate an incomplete oxidation of Na at 125 K. Oxidation at 350 K completely oxidizes the metallic islands producing a mixture of Na 2 O and Na 2 O 2 . Thermal evolution of the oxidation products was examined. After oxidation at 350 K and flashing to 750 K, Na 2 O and Na 2 O 2 are the primary oxides on MnO(100). After flashing to 850 K, a solid state reaction of Na 2 O 2 /Na 2 O and the MnO(100) substrate forms a NaMnO 2 -like surface compound which decomposes above 850 K. Oxygen exchange between CO 2 and Na oxides is observed. The strong interaction between CO 2 and Na oxide islands forms Na 2 CO 3 on MnO(100). Heating the Na 2 CO 3 covered MnO(100) surface to 600 K for 10 min drives oxidic Na in the first monolayer into the MnO subsurface, and produces a surface exposing islands of Na 2 CO 3 on MnO(100).

Flux-assisted polytypism in the [Na 2 Cl]GaQ 2 heterolayered salt-inclusion chalcogenide family

Two polytypic heterolayered salt-inclusion chalcogenides, o-[Na 2 Cl]GaQ 2 and t-[Na 2 Cl]GaQ 2 , were obtained via a NaCl/NaI flux-assisted synthesis, as part of an investigation of the Na–Ga–Q (Q = S and Se) system. The use of a different flux, NaBr/NaI, in the Na–Ga–Se system did not lead to the formation of salt-inclusion phases, but instead the novel Na 2 GaSe 3 and Na 4 Ga 2 Se 5 phases were obtained. Thermal and electronic properties of [Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 materials were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, post-quenching ex situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), high-temperature PXRD, and enthalpy and electronic structure calculations via density functional theory. Those studies determined the absence of any temperature-induced phase transition between the o-[Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 and t-[Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 polytypic compounds. Moreover, herein we probed the suitability of the heterolayered [Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 single crystals as a sorbent for UO 2 2+ uptake and monitored this process by energy-dispersive and infrared spectroscopies and PXRD, which revealed that the [Na 2 Cl]+ insert could be exchanged with UO 2 2+ on the surface while the UO 2 2+ intercalation decomposes the [Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 structure.

Weakly coupled alternating S = 1 2 chains in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6

Spin- 1 2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings exhibit quantum entanglement as the integer-spin Haldane chains and might be similarly utilized for quantum computations. Such alternating AF-FM chains have been proposed to be realized in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 , but to confirm this picture a comprehensive understanding of the exchange interactions including terms outside of the idealized model is required. Here, we employ neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics in Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 and accurately determine the coupling strengths through the random phase approximation and density functional theory approaches. We find the AF and FM intrachain couplings are the dominant terms in the spin Hamiltonian, while the interchain couplings are AF but perturbative. This hierarchy in the coupling strengths and the alternating signs of the intrachain couplings can be understood through their different exchange paths. Our results establish Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 as a weakly coupled alternating AF-FM chain compound and reveal the robustness of the gapped ground state in alternating chains under weak interchain couplings.

Polymorphism and phase transitions in Na 2 U 2 O 7 from density functional perturbation theory

Polymorphism and phase transitions in sodium diuranate, Na 2 U 2 O 7 , are investigated with density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). Thermal properties of crystalline α-, β- and γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 polymorphs are predicted from DFPT phonon calculations, i.e., the first time for the high-temperature γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 phase (R$\bar{3}$ with combining macron]m symmetry). The standard molar isochoric heat capacities predicted within the quasi-harmonic approximation are C p (298.15K)= 219.4 and 220.9 J K -1 mol -1 mfor P21/a α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 and C2/m β-Na 2 U 2 O 7 , respectively. Gibbs free energy calculations reveal that α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 (P2 1 /a) and β-Na 2 U 2 O 7 (C2/m) are almost energetically degenerate at low temperature, with β-Na 2 U 2 O 7 becoming slightly more stable than α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 as temperature increases. Here these findings are consistent with XRD data showing a mixture of α and β phases after cooling of γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 to room temperature and the observation of a sluggish α → β phase transition above ca. 600 K. A recently observed α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 structure with P21 symmetry is also shown to be metastable at low temperature. Based on Gibbs free energy, no direct β → γ solid-solid phase transition is predicted at high temperature, although some experiments reported the existence of such phase transition around 1348 K. This, along with recent experiments, suggests the occurrence of a multi-step process consisting of initial β-phase decomposition, followed by recrystallization into γ-phase as temperature increases.

Molecular structure and catalytic promotional effect of Mn on supported Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalysts for oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) reaction

The structure and promotional effect of Mn in supported Mn-Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalysts for the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) reaction has been debated for a longtime in the literature. In the current investigation, with the aid of multiple in-situ characterization studies, we show that the freshly calcined supported 1.2Mn-5Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalyst possesses crystalline Na 2 WO 4 , Mn 2 O 3 and SiO 2 (cristobalite phase) along with surface MnO x and Na-WO x sites at low temperature and oxidizing environments. Under the OCM reaction environment (T>800°C), the crystalline Na 2 WO 4 phase melts and Mn 2 O 3 phase reduces. In contrast, the surface MnO x and Na-WO x sites exhibit excellent thermal and chemical stability. Exposure of the 1.2Mn-5Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalyst to the OCM reaction environment redisperses the molten Na 2 WO 4 phase on the SiO 2 support to form new surface WO x sites. Interestingly, the stable MnO x species interacts with both molten Na 2 WO 4 phase and surface Na-WO x sites during OCM reaction. Controlled transient kinetic experiments in TAP and detailed steady state OCM fixed-bed reaction studies reveal the role and promotional effect of Mn in the 1.2Mn-5Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalyst. The W-oxides (both molten Na 2 WO 4 and surface Na-WO x sites) are the active sites for the catalytic OCM reaction and the MnO x species only function as promoters. The promotion of MnO x strongly depends on the gas phase O 2 partial pressure and the MnO x species act as mediators for oxygen exchange between the gas phase molecular O 2 and catalyst lattice oxygen. In conclusion, the temperature dependent MnO x promotion reveals that the MnO x species selectively promote the molten Na 2 WO 4 phase at lower reaction temperature and the surface Na-WO x sites at higher temperature.
