Electronic structure of NdO via slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of NdO –

Electronically excited NdO is a possible product of the chemistry associated with the release of Nd into the ionosphere, and emission from these states may contribute to the observations following such experiments. To better characterize the energetics and spectroscopy of NdO, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled NdO – anions (cryo-SEVI) supplemented by wave function-based quantum-chemical calculations. Using cryo-SEVI, we measure the electron affinity of NdO to be 1.0091(7) eV and resolve numerous transitions to low-lying electronic and vibrational states of NdO that are assigned with the aid of the electronic structure calculations. Additionally, temperature-dependent data suggest contributions from the (2)4.5 state of NdO – residing 2350 cm –1 above the ground anion state. Finally, photodetachment to higher-lying excited states of NdO is also reported, which may help to clarify observations from prior release experiments.

Thermodynamic Database for the NdO(1.5)-YO(1.5)-YbO(1.5)-ScO(1.5)-ZrO2 System

A database for YO(1.5)-NdO(1.5)-YbO(1.5)-ScO(1.5)-ZrO2 for ThermoCalc (ThermoCalc AB, Stockholm, Sweden) has been developed. The basis of this work is the YO(1.5)-ZrO2 assessment by Y. Du, Z. Jin, and P. Huang, 'Thermodynamic Assessment of the ZrO2-YO(1.5) System'. Experimentally only the YO(1.5)-ZrO2 system has been well-studied. All other systems are only approximately known. The major simplification in this work is the treatment of each single cation unit as a component. The pure liquid oxides are taken as reference states and two term lattice stability descriptions are used for each of the components. The limited experimental phase diagrams are reproduced.

Octahedral oxide glass network in ambient pressure neodymium titanate

Abstract Rare-earth titanates form very fragile liquids that can be made into glasses with useful optical properties. We investigate the atomic structure of 83TiO 2 -17Nd 2 O 3 glass using pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of X-ray and neutron diffraction with double isotope substitutions for both Ti and Nd. Six total structure factors are analyzed (5 neutron + 1 X-ray) to obtain complementary sensitivities to O and Ti/Nd scattering, and an empirical potential structure refinement (EPSR) provides a structural model consistent with the experimental measurements. Glass density is estimated as 4.72(13) g cm −3 , consistent with direct measurements. The EPSR model indicates nearest neighbor interactions for Ti-O at $$\overline{r}_{TiO}$$ r ¯ TiO = 1.984(11) Å with coordination of $$n_{TiO}$$ n TiO = 5.72(6) and for Nd-O at $$\overline{r}_{NdO}$$ r ¯ NdO = 2.598(22) Å with coordination of $$n_{NdO}$$ n NdO = 7.70(26), in reasonable agreement with neutron first order difference functions for Ti and Nd. The titanate glass network comprises a mixture of distorted Ti-O 5 and Ti-O 6 polyhedra connected via 71% corner-sharing and 23% edge-sharing. The O-Ti coordination environments include 15% nonbridging O-Ti 1 , 51% bridging O-Ti 2 , and 32% tricluster O-Ti 3 . This structure is highly unusual for oxide glasses melt-quenched at ambient pressure, as it consists of Ti-O x predominantly in octahedral (with nearly no tetrahedral) coordination.

Calculated Ionization Potentials of MO 3 and MO 2 for M = U, Mo, W, and Nd

Here, ionization potentials (IPs) for MO 3 and MO 2 for M = U, Mo, W, and Nd have been predicted using the Feller–Peterson–Dixon (FPD) approach at the coupled cluster CCSD(T)/complete basis set level including additional corrections. The additional corrections are mostly small, with spin-orbit effects contributing less than 0.05 eV, except for NdO 2 where the correction lowers the IP by 0.26 eV. The IPs for UO 3 and UO 2 are calculated to be 9.59 and 6.09 eV, respectively. The calculated IPs for MoO 3 and WO 3 are very similar, 11.13 and 11.11 eV, respectively, and MoO 2 and WO 2 are 8.51 and 8.79 eV, respectively. MoO 2 has a triplet ground state, whereas WO 2 has a singlet ground state. The calculated IP for NdO 2 is 7.90 eV. NdO 3 does not achieve a high +VI formal oxidation state on the lanthanide and has an IP of 7.80 eV. These calculated IPs are expected to have error bars of ±0.04 eV.

MPCVD-Grown Nanodiamond Microelectrodes with Oxygen Plasma Activation for Neurochemical Applications

Nanodiamonds (NDs) are a carbon nanomaterial that has a diamond core with heteroatoms and defects at the surface. The large surface area, defect sites, and functional groups on NDs make them a promising material for electrochemical sensing. Previously, we dip-coated ND onto carbon-fiber microelectrodes (CFMEs) and found increases in sensitivity, but the coating was sparse. Here, for this work, we directly grew thin films of ND on niobium wires using microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MP-CVD) to provide full surface coverage. ND microelectrodes show a reliable performance in neurotransmitter detection with good antifouling properties. To improve sensitivity, we oxygen plasma etched ND films to activate the surface and intentionally add defects and oxygen surface functional groups. For fast-scan cyclic voltammetry detection of dopamine, oxygen plasma-etching increases the sensitivity from 21 nA/μM to 90 nA/μM after treatment. Fouling was tested by repeated injections of serotonin or tyramine, and both ND and plasma oxidized nanodiamond (NDO) microelectrodes maintain their currents better compared to CFMEs and therefore are more antifouling. Furthermore, a biofouling test in brain slices shows that ND microelectrodes barely have any current drop, while the more hydrophilic NDO microelectrodes decrease more, but still not as much as CFMEs. Overall, grown ND microelectrodes are promising in neurotransmitter detection with excellent fouling resistance, whereas oxygen plasma etching slightly lowers the fouling resistance but dramatically increases sensitivity.

Tunable doping of carbon nanotubes through engineered atomic layer deposition

A carbon nanotube field effect transistor (CNFET), that has a channel formed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), includes a layered deposit of a nonstoichiometric doping oxide (NDO), such as HfOX, where the concentration of the NDO varies through the thickness of the layer(s). An n-type metal-oxide semiconductor (NMOS) CNFET made in this manner can achieve similar ON-current, OFF-current, and/or threshold voltage magnitudes to a corresponding p-type metal-oxide semiconductor (PMOS) CNFET. Such an NMOS and PMOS can be used to achieve a symmetric complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) CNFET design.

Parametric optimization of the liquid sampling-atmospheric pressure glow discharge ionization source coupled to an Orbitrap mass spectrometer for neodymium isotope ratio determinations

Isotope ratio determinations are a valuable tool in several application areas. In nuclear forensics, the isotope ratios of uranium and plutonium are commonly used as a signature for the nuclear material's provenance and processing history. However, signatures from other coexisting elements, such as neodymium and samarium, can offer additional insights. Here, the liquid sampling-atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) ionization source coupled to an Orbitrap mass spectrometer (MS) has demonstrated its utility for actinide measurements. This instrumental platform can leverage the high resolution offered by the Orbitrap MS to overcome potential isobaric interferences, such as 144 Nd- 144 Sm, 148 Nd- 148 Sm, and 150 Nd- 150 Sm pairs. The work presented herein demonstrates the rapid, accurate, and precise determination of the isotope ratios for neodymium using the LS-APGD/Orbitrap MS. Both the LS-APGD and Orbitrap MS parameters were optimized systematically, with NdO + found to be the most abundant, most reduced species after applying the optimal collision-induced dissociation modalities. A limit of detection of 3 pg of 142 Nd was achieved when data was acquired and processed using the FTMS Booster, an external data acquisition and processing system offered by Spectroswiss. Excellent accuracy of better than 99 % and precision of <1 % RSD were achieved when a solution of the well-characterized neodymium standard (JNdi-1 standard) was analyzed under the optimized condition, indicating the LS-APGD/Orbitrap's great potential for isotope ratio analysis of Nd and other REEs for diverse applications.
