Heats of mixing in praseodymium-neodymium solid solutions.

The heats of solution in liquid tin of pure praseodymium, pure neodymium and nine praseodymium-neodymium binary alloys have been measured using liquid metal solution calorimetry. A plot of the measured heat effect for the alloys as a function of composition is linear, with the terminal points being the measured values for the pure components. This linear dependency indicates that the heat of mixing in the binary praseodymium-neodymium system is zero within experimental error, and therefore the binary alloys obey one of the criteria for an ideal solution.

Magnetically suspended miniature fluid pump and method of designing the same

A rotary pump for pumping fluids through a patient having a housing with an internal region, a stator member and an impeller positioned within the housing and having impeller blades, wherein the impeller is magnetically suspended and rotated, and wherein the geometric configuration of the rotary pump is sized and proportioned to minimize stagnant and traumatic fluid flow within the rotary pump. The plurality of magnetic impeller blades are preferably rare earth, high-energy-density magnets selected from the group consisting of samarium cobalt and neodymium-iron-boron alloy.

Laser shocking of 2024 and 7075 aluminum alloys

The effect of laser generated stress waves on the microstructure, hardness, strength and stress corrosion resistance of 2024 and 7075 aluminum alloys was investigated. Pulsed CO2 and neodymium-glass lasers were used to determine the effect of wavelength and pulse duration on pressure generation and material property changes. No changes in material properties were observed with CO2 laser. The strength and hardness of 2024-T351 and the strength of 7075-T73 aluminum alloys were substantially improved by the stress wave environments generated with the neodymium-glass laser. The mechanical properties of 2024-T851 and 7075-T651 were unchanged by the laser treatment. The correlation of the laser shock data with published results of flyer plate experiments demonstrated that a threshold pressure needed to be exceeded before strengthening and hardening could occur. Peak pressures generated by the pulsed laser source were less than 7.0 GPa which was below the threshold pressure required to change the mechanical properties of 2024-T851 and 7075-T651. Corrosion studies indicated that laser shocking increased the resistance to local attack in 2024-T351 and 7075-T651.
