P0004-1 quick look

The P0004-1 'Seeds in Space' experiment consisted of six sealed aluminum canisters which contained tomato seeds and a variety of other seeds for the study of space radiation effects on the seeds. The seeds were contained in cloth bags. Interspersed among the bags of seeds were ten dosimeter packets to monitor the accumulated ionizing radiation exposure of the seeds. In addition to the ten flight dosimeter packets, four ground control packets and one ground movement packet were also included as part of the experiment. The P0004-1 experiment was mounted on the F2 tray, near the trailing edge of the LDEF orbiter. The results indicate that the neutron fluences were higher in the P0004 canisters than in that of P0006. The difference was much greater for thermal neutrons than resonance neutrons. This is consistent with shielding.

Neutron capture effects in lunar gadolinium and the irradiation histories of some lunar rocks.

The Gd isotopic composition in 19 lunar rock and soil samples from three Apollo sites is reported. The analytical techniques and the high precision mass spectrometric measurements are discussed. Enrichments in the Gd-158 oxide to G-157 oxide ratio due to neutron capture range up to 0.75%. Integrated 'thermal' neutron fluxes derived from the isotopic anomalies of Gd are compared with spallation Kr data from aliquot samples to construct a model which gives both average cosmic-ray irradiation depths and effective neutron exposure ages for some rocks. Rock 14310 is the first lunar sample where Kr anomalies due to resonance neutron capture in Br are observed. A Kr-81/Kr exposure age of 262 (plus or minus 7)m.y. is calculated for this rock.

Differential neutron energy spectra measured on spacecraft in low Earth orbit

Two methods for measuring neutrons in the range from thermal energies to dozens of MeV were used. In the first method, alpha-particles emitted from the 6Li(n,alpha)T reaction are detected with the help of plastic nuclear track detectors, yielding results on thermal and resonance neutrons. Also, fission foils are used to detect fast neutrons. In the second method, fast neutrons are recorded by nuclear photographic emulsions (NPE). The results of measurements on board various satellites are presented. The neutron flux density does not appear to correlate clearly with orbital parameters. Up to 50% of neutrons are due to albedo neutrons from the atmosphere while the fluxes inside the satellites are 15-20% higher than those on the outside. Estimates show that the neutron contribution to the total equivalent radiation dose reaches 20-30%.

Ionizing radiation measurements on LDEF: A0015 Free flyer biostack experiment

This report covers the analysis of passive radiation detectors flown as part of the A0015 Free Flyer Biostack on LDEF (Long Duration Exposure Facility). LET (linear energy transfer) spectra and track density measurements were made with CR-39 and Polycarbonate plastic nuclear track detectors. Measurements of total absorbed dose were carried out using Thermoluminescent Detectors. Thermal and resonance neutron dose equivalents were measured with LiF/CR-39 detectors. High energy neutron and proton dose equivalents were measured with fission foil/CR-39 detectors.

Cyclotron line resonant transfer through neutron star atmospheres

Monte Carlo methods are used to study in detail the resonant radiative transfer of cyclotron line photons with recoil through a purely scattering neutron star atmosphere for both the polarized and unpolarized cases. For each case, the number of scatters, the path length traveled, the escape frequency shift, the escape direction cosine, the emergent frequency spectra, and the angular distribution of escaping photons are investigated. In the polarized case, transfer is calculated using both the cold plasma e- and o-modes and the magnetic vacuum perpendicular and parallel modes.
