Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics by Multiconfiguration Pair-Density Functional Theory

Herein, we present the first implementation of multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT) ab initio molecular dynamics. MC-PDFT is a multireference electronic structure method that in many cases has a similar accuracy (or even better accuracy) the complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) at a significantly lower computational cost. In this study, we introduced MC-PDFT analytical gradients into the SHARC molecular dynamics program for ab initio, nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. We verify our implementation by examining the intersystem crossing dynamics of thioformaldehyde, and we observe excellent agreement with recent CASPT2 and experimental findings. Moreover, with MC-PDFT, we could perform dynamics simulations with the 12 electron in 10 orbitals active space that was computationally too expensive for direct dynamics with CASPT2.

Energy Transfer Mechanisms in Large Low-Bandgap Polymers from Time-Resolved Experiments and Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics Calculations

Conjugated polymers offer unprecedented chemical tunability for modulating energy transfer in a multitude of infrared light applications. In this work, we use a combination of time-resolved spectroscopic experiments and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics calculations to probe the photochemistry and nonradiative transitions in a recently synthesized narrow bandgap donor–acceptor conjugated polymer based on alternating cyclopentadithiophene and electronegative benzothiadiazole heterocycles. Using large-scale semi-empirical nonadiabatic molecular dynamics, which can treat a large 260-atom hexamer, we calculate an S 5 → S 1 lifetime of 34.75 fs, which is consistent with our time-resolved spectroscopic data. Our simulations suggest that vibronic motions of the central carbons in the cyclopentadithiophene functional groups are predominantly involved in the nonradiative transitions, and the excitation becomes more localized on a monomer fragment over time. The combined use of time-resolved experiments and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics calculations in this work provides mechanistic insight into chemical functionalities that can be tuned to enhance energy transfer in other prospective low-bandgap polymer materials.

Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics Simulations Based on Time-Dependent Density Functional Tight-Binding Method

Nonadiabatic excited-state molecular dynamics underpin many photophysical and photochemical phenomena, such as exciton dynamics, charge separation and transport. In this work, we present an efficient nonadiabatic molecular dynamic (NAMD) simulation method based on time-dependent density functional tight-binding (TDDFTB) theory. Specifically, the adiabatic electronic structure, an essential NAMD input, is described at the TDDFTB level. Here, the nonadiabatic effects originating from the coupled motions of electrons and nuclei are treated by the trajectory surface hopping algorithm. To improve the computational efficiency, nonadiabatic couplings between excited states within the TDDFTB method are derived and implemented using an analytical approach. Further, the time-dependent nonadiabatic coupling scalars are calculated based on the overlap between molecular orbitals rather than the Slater determinants to speed up the simulations. In addition, the electronic decoherence scheme and a state reassigned unavoided crossings algorithm, which has been implemented in the NEXMD software, are used to improve the accuracy of the simulated dynamics and handle trivial unavoided crossings. Finally, the photoinduced nonadiabatic dynamics of a benzene molecule are simulated to demonstrate our implementation. The results for excited state NAMD simulations of benzene molecule based on TDDFTB method compare well that obtained with numerically expensive time-dependent density functional theory. The proposed methodology provides an attractive theoretical simulation tool for predicting the photophysical and photochemical properties of complex materials.

Spin-orbit coupling induced demagnetization in Ni: Ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics perspective

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which can induce spin flip during the relaxation of photoexcited charge carrier, plays a crucial role in spin dynamics. Here in this work, we have used time-domain ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) method to study the SOC induced ultrafast demagnetization in Ni at 300K. The spin-diabatic representation using spin-polarized Kohn-Sham (KS) basis sets and spin-adiabatic representation using spinor basis sets have been applied, and both of them achieve demagnetization in Ni with a timescale around 100fs. The spin-diabatic representation suggests a picture that the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) provides direct energy relaxation channel among the same-spin states, while the SOC can induce spin flip. After photoexcitation, it is found the spin-minority electrons relax to the same-spin states rather than the opposite-spin states, since EPC is larger than SOC by one order of magnitude. By contrast, for the spin-majority electrons, spin flip occurs since there are no empty same-spin states as electron acceptor above the Fermi level. The different relaxation pathways for spin-majority and spin-minority electrons induce the demagnetization. The spin-adiabatic representation provides an Elliott-Yafet spin-phonon scattering picture. The SOC induced reduction of magnetic moment in Ni may induce magnon to drive further demagnetization. The ab initio NAMD simulation provides a critical angle to understand how the SOC and EPC affect demagnetization process in Ni.

Investigation of plasmon relaxation mechanisms using nonadiabatic molecular dynamics

Hot carriers generated from the decay of plasmon excitation can be harvested to drive a wide range of physical or chemical processes. However, their generation efficiency is limited by the concomitant phonon-induced relaxation processes by which the energy in excited carriers is transformed into heat. However, simulations of dynamics of nanoscale clusters are challenging due to the computational complexity involved. Here, in this paper, we adopt our newly developed Trajectory Surface Hopping (TSH) nonadiabatic molecular dynamics algorithm to simulate plasmon relaxation in Au 20 clusters, taking the atomistic details into account. The electronic properties are treated within the Linear Response Time-Dependent Tight-binding Density Functional Theory (LR-TDDFTB) framework. The relaxation of plasmon due to coupling to phonon modes in Au 20 beyond the Born–Oppenheimer approximation is described by the TSH algorithm. The numerically efficient LR-TDDFTB method allows us to address a dense manifold of excited states to ensure the inclusion of plasmon excitation. Starting from the photoexcited plasmon states in Au 20 cluster, we find that the time constant for relaxation from plasmon excited states to the lowest excited states is about 2.7 ps, mainly resulting from a stepwise decay process caused by low-frequency phonons of the Au 20 cluster. Furthermore, our simulations show that the lifetime of the phonon-induced plasmon dephasing process is ~10.4 fs and that such a swift process can be attributed to the strong nonadiabatic effect in small clusters. Our simulations demonstrate a detailed description of the dynamic processes in nanoclusters, including plasmon excitation, hot carrier generation from plasmon excitation dephasing, and the subsequent phonon-induced relaxation process.

Excited-State and Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics Methods with Broad Applicability

Electronically excited states play a pivotal role in the capture, transformation, storage, and emission of radiative energy. Despite much recent progress for small model systems, excited state properties and dynamics in many larger molecular devices and materials have remained elusive for experiment and theory. Nonadiabatic transitions between electronic states turn radiative energy into heat and are particularly difficult to control. This project aims to develop new electronic structure and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) methods to simulate, predict, and ultimately control the flow and transformation of excitation energy in a wide-range of light-driven molecular devices such as dyes, photocatalysts, and fluorescence emitters.

Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics Study of the Relaxation Pathways of Photoexcited Cyclooctatetraene

In the current study, we present nonadiabatic (NAMD) and adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations of the transition-state dynamics of photoexcited cyclooctatetraene (COT). The equilibrium-state structure and absorption spectra are analyzed using the semiempirical Austin Model 1 potential. The NAMD simulations are obtained by a surface-hopping algorithm. We analyzed in detail an active excited to ground state relaxation pathway accompanied by an S 2 /S 3 (D 2d ) → S 1 (D 8h ) → S o (D 4h ) → S o (D 2d ) double-bond shifting mechanism. The simulated excitation lifetime is in good agreement with experiment. The first excited singlet state S1 plays a crucial role in the photochemistry. Here, the obtained critical molecular conformations, energy barrier, and transition-state lifetime results will provide a basis for further investigations of the bond-order inversion and photoswitching process of COT.

Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulation of C2H22+ in a strong laser field*

We investigate the alignment dependence of the strong laser dissociation dynamics of molecule C 2 H 2 2 + in the frame of real-time and real-space time-dependent density function theory coupled with nonadiabatic quantum molecular dynamics (TDDFT-MD) simulation. This work is based on a recent experiment study “ultrafast electron diffraction imaging of bond breaking in di-ionized acetylene” [Wolter et al , Science 354 , 308–312 (2016)]. Our simulations are in excellent agreement with the experimental data and the analysis confirms that the alignment dependence of the proton dissociation dynamics comes from the electron response of the driving laser pulse. Our results validate the ability of the TDDFT-MD method to reveal the underlying mechanism of experimentally observed and control molecular dissociation dynamics.

Atomistic Origin of Microsecond Carrier Lifetimes at Perovskite Grain Boundaries: Machine Learning-Assisted Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics

The polycrystalline nature of perovskites, stemming from their facile solution-based fabrication, leads to a high density of grain boundaries (GBs) and point defects. However, the impact of GBs on perovskite performance remains uncertain, with contradictory statements found in the literature. We developed a machine learning force field, sampled GB structures on a nanosecond time scale, and performed nonadiabatic (NA) molecular dynamics simulations of charge carrier trapping and recombination in stoichiometric and doped GBs. The simulations reveal long, microsecond carrier lifetimes, approaching experimental data, stemming from charge separation at the GBs and small NA coupling, 0.01–0.1 meV. Stoichiometric GBs exhibit transient trap states, which, however, are not particularly detrimental to the carrier lifetime. Halide dopants form interstitial defects in the bulk, but have a stabilizing influence on the GB structure by passivating undersaturated Pb atoms and reducing the transient trap state formation. On the contrary, excess Pb destabilizes GBs, allowing formation of persistent midgap states that trap charges. Still, the charge carrier lifetime reduces relatively little, because the midgap states decouple from the bands, and charges are more likely to escape back into bands upon a GB structural fluctuation. The atomistic study into the structural dynamics of perovskite GBs and its influence on charge carrier trapping and recombination provides valuable insights into the complex properties of perovskites and the intricate role of GBs in the material performance.

Roadmap for Molecular Benchmarks in Nonadiabatic Dynamics

Simulating the coupled electronic and nuclear response of a molecule to light excitation requires the application of nonadiabatic molecular dynamics. However, when faced with a specific photophysical or photochemical problem, selecting the most suitable theoretical approach from the wide array of available techniques is not a trivial task. The challenge is further complicated by the lack of systematic method comparisons and rigorous testing on realistic molecular systems. This absence of comprehensive molecular benchmarks remains a major obstacle to advances within the field of nonadiabatic molecular dynamics. A CECAM workshop, Standardizing Nonadiabatic Dynamics: Towards Common Benchmarks, was held in May 2024 to address this issue. This Perspective highlights the key challenges identified during the workshop in defining molecular benchmarks for nonadiabatic dynamics. Specifically, this work outlines some preliminary observations on essential components needed for simulations and proposes a roadmap aiming to establish, as an ultimate goal, a community-driven, standardized molecular benchmark set.

Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics analysis of hybrid Dion–Jacobson 2D leads iodide perovskites

The past six years have witnessed the rapid growth of interest in Dion–Jacobson (DJ) phase two-dimensional (2D) hybrid halide perovskites as optoelectronic materials with considerable intrinsic stability. The precise relationships between structural variations and the resulting charge carrier dynamics at finite temperature in these materials are keys to practical applications and are not yet completely understood. Here, we study 3-(aminomethyl) piperidinium (3AMP) and 4-(aminomethyl) piperidinium (4AMP) spacer cation-based lead iodide DJ phase systems and find these spacer cations to have a profound impact on the structural dynamics. Particularly, large conformational dynamics of the 3AMP-based perovskite compared to that of the 4AMP at room temperature leads to pronounced state energy fluctuation near band edges and further results in a shorter quantum coherence. The faster quantum decoherence of the 3AMP spacer-based perovskite underpins a longer nonradiative lifetime, offering insight into its superior performance as an optoelectronic material. This work sheds light on the relationship between structural fluctuations and charge carrier dynamics that can help in designing 2D perovskites with superior photophysical properties.

PySpawn: Software for Nonadiabatic Quantum Molecular Dynamics

The ab initio multiple spawning (AIMS) method enables nonadiabatic quantum molecular dynamics simulations in an arbitrary number of dimensions, with potential energy surfaces provided by electronic structure calculations performed on-the-fly. However, the intricacy of the AIMS algorithm complicates software development, deployment on modern shared computer resources, and post-simulation data analysis. PySpawn is a nonadiabatic molecular dynamics software package that addresses these issues. Here, the program is designed to be easily interfaced with electronic structure software, and an interface to the TeraChem software package is described here. PySpawn introduces a task-based reorganization of the AIMS algorithm, allowing fine-grained restart capability and setting the stage for efficient parallelization in a future release. PySpawn includes a user-friendly and interactive Python analysis module that will enable novice users to painlessly adopt AIMS. As a demonstration of PySpawn’s simulation capability and analysis module, we report complete active space self-consistent field–based AIMS simulations of the 1,2- dithienyl-1,2-dicyanoethene molecule, a promising molecular photoswitch.

Band Structure-Driven Design of a α-CsPbI 3 Ammonia Sensor for Industrial Applications

We investigate the defect-dependent electronic structure and gas-sensing potential of cubic α-CsPbI 3 using first-principles density functional theory and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics. Among the intrinsic defects, interstitials, vacancies, antisites, and switches studied, the I Pb and Pb I antisite defects exhibit transition energy levels near the middle of the band gap, thus functioning as deep traps. Short-term adsorption of ammonia selectively modifies the electronic structure, coordinating with Pb at Pb I sites and Cs at I Pb sites, significantly altering recombination pathways. Detailed analysis reveals that NH 3 reduces anharmonicity at I Pb defects, enabling enhanced recombination at elevated temperatures, while trap-assisted recombination dominates at room temperature. Other analytes, including CH 3 NH 2 and NO 2 , show negligible impact on the band gap or recombination dynamics, highlighting the potential selectivity of NH 3 interactions. Ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations at 300 K and 600 K further demonstrate temperature-dependent modulation of carrier lifetimes, with NH 3 accelerating recombination at ambient conditions and suppressing certain pathways at higher temperatures. These findings suggest that α-CsPbI 3 can serve as a selective and sensitive ammonia sensor over a broad temperature range and offer insights for ammonia detection under industrially relevant conditions.
