Comparative study of three yttrium organometallic compounds for the stabilization of the cubic phase in YSZ deposited by PE-CVD

In this work, the efficiencies of three organometallic yttrium precursors used to produce YSZ coatings by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition were studied. Yttrium (III) acetylacetonate, Y (acac) 3 , yttrium (III) hexafluoroacetylacetonate, Y (acacF 6 ) 3 , and yttrium (III) tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate), Y (tmhd) 3 , were used to stabilize the cubic phase in zirconia deposited at temperatures from 500 to 800 °C. Our results showed that at temperatures between 500 and 600 °C, Y (tmhd) 3 appeared to be the most efficient dopant as it introduced the highest concentration of yttria (1–2.7 mol%) with only 6.4–5.6 at.% carbon. However, at 700 and 800 °C, Y (acac) 3 introduced twice as much yttria (8–15 mol%) as Y (tmhd) 3 with almost the same amount of carbon (5.4–3 at.%). Conversely, Y (acacF6)3 was the least efficient as it maintained a low concentration of yttria of around 0.7–1.8 mol% with 3.6–8.2 at.% carbon for all the deposition temperatures. Among these precursors, only Y (acac) 3 surpassed 8 mol% yttria and achieved a fully stabilized cubic phase at 800 °C, with the remaining samples stabilizing only the tetragonal phase. The tetragonal phase was stabilized due to the formation of crystallites of around 10 nm. The observed difference in the efficiency of the three precursors was correlated to important differences in their decomposition behavior as observed by mass spectrometry and thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry.

Model for the Vaporization of Mixed Organometallic Compounds in the Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition of High Temperature Superconducting Films

A model of the vaporization and mass transport of mixed organometallics from a single source for thin film metalorganic chemical vapor deposition is presented. A stoichiometric gas phase can be obtained from a mixture of the organometallics in the desired mole ratios, in spite of differences in the volatilities of the individual compounds. Proper film composition and growth rates are obtained by controlling the velocity of a carriage containing the organometallics through the heating zone of a vaporizer.

Alkali Metal Cation Effects on Dinitrogen Complexes and Organometallic Compounds

Alkali metal (AM) cations are often taken for granted as counterions in coordination chemistry and organometallic reactions. However, the AM cation can be more than a bystander in inorganic transformations. This Account focuses on research that has elucidated several types of AM cation effects and how these can be exploited to achieve novel structures and reactivity pathways. Here, a particular focus is on AM cation effects in low-coordinate iron β-diketiminate complexes, though we address general trends and potential applications in systems with other supporting ligands.

Development of copper thiolate organometallic compound as thermal sensitive coating for energy storage system safety

Safety and reliability are primary concerns for the deployment of lithium-ion batteries, especially in electric vehicles (EV) and larger-scale energy storage systems (ESS). Current technology in battery management systems (BMS) includes cell voltage monitoring and positioning temperature sensors in selected locations. For a system with hundreds to thousands of individual batteries, single-point temperature monitoring is inadequate to detect hot spots and cell overheating, which could lead to thermal runaway. Here, we have developed a temperature-sensitive copper-thiol compound that can be directly coated onto battery pouch foils to enable early detection of thermal runaway. Upon reaching specific temperatures, this compound releases a sulfur-containing detectable gas, which can be identified using chemically specific gas sensors to trigger an early warning signal. Such a signal propagate through air offers broad signal coverage and enables a more comprehensive approach to large-area temperature monitoring. The Cu-ethanethiol coating is designed to release volatile gases when the substrate surface temperature exceeds 70 °C, with continuous outgassing as the temperature increases. The compound is composed of Cu, S, Cl, hydrocarbons and trace amounts of oxygen. Upon heating, the oxidation state of Cu(I) transitions to Cu (II), accompanied by gas release. Thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry correlated well with the onset of gas release temperature and emission of sulfur-containing volatile gases. Additionally, an acrylic overcoat is applied to enhance the adhesion of the thermally sensitive compound film to the battery pouch foil. This coating is expected to offer an additional safety layer for ESS, alerting possible thermal runaway events before a failure occurs, thereby allowing sufficient time to implement a mitigation plan.

Thiourea-Derived Chelating Ligands and Their Organometallic Compounds: Investigations into Their Anticancer Activity

Thiones have been investigated as ligands in metal complexes with catalytic and biological activity. We report the synthesis, characterization, and biological evaluation of a series of MII/III complexes of the general formulae [M II (cym)(L)Cl]X (cym = η 6 -p-cymene) or [M III (Cp*)(L)Cl]X (Cp* = η 5 -pentamethylcyclopentadienyl), where X = Cl - or PF 6 - , and L represents heterocyclic derivatives of thiourea. The thiones feature a benzyl-triazolyl pendant and they act as bidentate ligands via N,S-coordination to the metal centers. Several derivatives have been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. NMR investigations showed a counterion-dependent shift of several protons due to the interaction with the counterions. These NMR investigations were complemented with X-ray diffraction analysis data and the effects of different counterions on the secondary coordination sphere were also investigated by DFT calculations. In biological studies, the Ir benzimidazole derivative was found to accumulate in the cytoplasm and it was the most cytotoxic derivative investigated.

Organometallic Compounds as Carriers of Extraterrestrial Cyanide in Primitive Meteorites

Extraterrestrial delivery of cyanide may have been crucial for the origin of life on Earth since cyanide is involved in the abiotic synthesis of numerous organic compounds found in extant life; however, little is known about the abundance and species of cyanide present in meteorites. Here, we report cyanide abundance in a set of CM chondrites ranging from 50 ± 1 to 2472 ± 38 nmol·g1, which relates to the degree of aqueous alteration of the meteorite and indicates that parent body processing inuenced cyanide abundance. Analysis of the Lewis Cliff 85311 meteorite shows that its releasable cyanide is primarily in the form of [FeII (CN)5(CO)]3 and [FeII(CN)4(CO)2]2-. Meteoritic delivery of iron cyanocarbonyl complexes to early Earth likely provided an important point source of free cyanide. Iron cyanocarbonyl complexes may have served as precursors to the unusual FeII(CN)(CO) moieties that form the catalytic centers of hydrogenases, which are thought to be among the earliest enzymes.

Review of the Toxicity of the Metallic Compounds Proposed for Use in the New Green Missile Formulation

In an effort to modernize and minimize hazards posed by the toxic components of missile propellant, the USACHPPM has been tasked to provide a comparison of the toxicity of compounds currently in use as missile propellants and the suite of compounds proposed to replace them. This report deals with the portion of this work concerning the toxicity of the organometallic compounds used in these formulations. Toxicity assessments of the organic compounds used in these formulations are published elsewhere. In general, toxicity data were available for all the metal compounds of concern or for closely related compounds that can serve as surrogates for the assessment of toxicity. We have high confidence in the reliability of these comparisons. This report is organized by element to provide the reader with an in-depth assessment with a minimum of redundancy. The narrative will first describe general concepts about the toxicity of each metal and then provide a summary of the toxicological information available for the specific compound.

Laser-assisted solar cell metallization processing

Laser-assisted processing techniques utilized to produce the fine line, thin metal grid structures that are required to fabricate high efficiency solar cells are examined. Two basic techniques for metal deposition are investigated; (1) photochemical decomposition of liquid or gas phase organometallic compounds utilizing either a focused, CW ultraviolet laser (System 1) or a mask and ultraviolet flood illumination, such as that provided by a repetitively pulsed, defocused excimer laser (System 2), for pattern definition, and (2) thermal deposition of metals from organometallic solutions or vapors utilizing a focused, CW laser beam as a local heat source to draw the metallization pattern.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Homoleptic Trivalent Tris(alkyl)lanthanides

Six new solvent-free, homoleptic paramagnetic tris(alkyl)lanthanides Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1Ln) and Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2Ln) (Ln = Gd, Dy, and Er) were synthesized to investigate the magnetic properties of 4f organometallic compounds stabilized by secondary Ln←H–Si and benzylic interactions. The unit cell of 1Gd contains one independent molecule (Z = 2), while 1Dy and 1Er crystallize with four independent isostructural molecules per unit cell (Z = 16). In all molecules, as in other 1Ln compounds, the three tris(dimethylsilyl)methyl ligands form a trigonal planar LnC 3 core, and six secondary interactions involving Ln←H–Si bonding in Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 form above and below the equatorial plane. Two and five crystallographically independent molecules of each 2Ln (2Gd, Z = 8; 2Dy, Z = 20) form with three π-coordinated phenyl groups in addition to either one or two secondary Ln←H–Si interactions per molecule. The packing of these midseries organolanthanide compounds contrasts the single crystallographically unique molecules in previously reported La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1La, Z = 2, Z' = 1) and La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2La, Z = 2, Z' = 1/3). 2La doped with 2Dy can adopt the crystallographic structure of 2La, which promotes magnetic properties, namely a higher χ m T value at low temperatures as well as stronger magnetic anisotropy. The ac susceptibility data for 10% 2Dy doped into 2La suggests slow relaxation at low temperatures with a relaxation barrier of ~45 K. The computed saturated magnetization of 1Er (M ≈ 4.5 μ B ) and 1Dy (M ≈ 6 μ B ) matches the experimental values, while the computed value for 2Dy better matches the value measured for 2Dy diluted in 2La (M ≈ 5 μ B ). Gas-phase calculations predict that the ground-state and first excited-state multiplet separations are larger for 1Er than 2Er, while the ordering for dysprosium is 1Dy > 2Dy.

Electronic Structure of Metallophthalocyanines, MPc (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mg) and Fluorinated MPc

In this work, we compute the electronic structure and optical excitation energies of metal-free and transition-metal phthalocyanines (H2Pc and MPc for M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mg) using density functional theory with optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals (OT-RSH). We show that the OT-RSH approach provides photoemission spectra in quantitative agreement with experiments as well as optical band gaps within 10% of their experimental values, capturing the interplay of localized d-states and delocalized pi-pi* states for these organometallic compounds. We examine the tunability of MPcs and H 2 Pc through fluorination, resulting in quasi-rigid shifts of the molecular orbital energies by up to 0.7 eV. Our comprehensive data set provides a new computational benchmark for gas-phase phthalocyanines, significantly improving upon other density-functional-theory-based approaches.

Entangled Electrons Drive a Non-superexchange Mechanism in a Cobalt Quinoid Dimer Complex

A central theme in chemistry is the understanding of the mechanisms that drive chemical transformations. A well-known, highly cited mechanism in organometallic chemistry is the superexchange mechanism in which unpaired electrons on two or more metal centers interact through an electron pair of the bridging ligand. We use a combination of novel synthesis and computation to show that such interactions may in fact occur by a more direct mechanism than superexchange that is based on direct quantum entanglement of the two metal centers. Specifically, we synthesize and experimentally characterize a novel cobalt dimer complex with benzoquinoid bridging ligands and investigate its electronic structure with the variational two-electron reduced density matrix method using large active spaces. The result draws novel connections between inorganic mechanisms and quantum entanglement, thereby opening new possibilities for the design of strongly correlated organometallic compounds whose magnetic and spin properties have applications in superconductors, energy storage, thermoelectrics, and spintronics.

Advances in supramolecular host-mediated reactivity

Since the trailblazing discoveries of Lehn, Cram and Pedersen, supramolecular chemistry has established itself as a cornerstone of organic chemistry. Supramolecular hosts offer defined microenvironments that mimic the active sites of enzymes, utilizing specific host–guest interactions to enable remarkable rate enhancements and product selectivity. The development of a diverse array of self-assembled hosts, coupled with the increased demand for shorter and greener synthetic routes, have spurred significant progress in the field of supramolecular catalysis. This Review Article covers recent advances in the field, ranging from novel organic reactivity aided by supramolecular hosts to catalytic cooperation between hosts and organometallic compounds or metal nanoparticles. Furthermore, strides have also been made in the synthetic application of these hosts in site-selective substrate modifications and challenging photochemical reactions. These efforts have enabled the incorporation of non-covalent macromolecular catalysis in natural product syntheses, evidencing their unique advantages as a synthetic tool, and their powerful potential for practical applications.
