OSMA Research and Technology Strategy Team Summary

This slide presentation reviews the work of the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA), and the OSMA Research and Technology Strategy (ORTS) team. There is discussion of the charter of the team, Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) and how the teams responsibilities are related to these TRLs. In order to improve the safety of all levels of the development through the TRL phases, improved communication, understanding and cooperation is required at all levels, particularly at the mid level technologies development.

Transition of OSMA AM Responsibility from WSTF to MSFC

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a rapidly evolving, game changing technology requiring many disciplines (including NDE) to ensure mission safety and reliability. While AM is becoming increasingly democratized and pervasive, managing risks for fracture critical L-PBF spaceflight hardware must clearly come from MSFC. Therefore OSMA roles for NDE qualification space flight hardware are being transitioned to MSFC.

OSMA Digital Evolution: R&M Physics of Failure (PoF) Handbook

At the intersection of mission, technology, and place is NASA’s need to modernize for a digital-forward future. Therefore, NASA’s Reliability & Maintainability (R&M) Enterprise Data Sharing team is working to leverage both Digitization and Digital Transformation to develop and share best practices and methodologies across NASA. One such cutting edge methodology is Physics of Failure. Therefore NASA OSMA's R&M office is developing a Reliability Physics of Failure Handbook in order to keep our engineers current and on the cutting edge of anlayis methodologies to help ensure NASA’s optimize and achieve continued success.

Design and development of an optical scanning mechanism (OSMA) with minimum momentum transfer

The development model for an optical scanning mechanism assembly is described as being two equal inertial masses which collide with each other to minimize the momentum transfer to the satellite and other mounted instruments. The design criteria for the mirror, the compensating inertia structure and other components are given. The details of the design are discussed and related test results are presented, which show the validity of the design concept for momentum compensation.

NASA OSMA NDE Program Additive Manufacturing Foundational Effort

NASA is providing key leadership in an international effort linking NASA and non-NASA resources to speed adoption of additive manufacturing (AM) to meet NASA's mission goals. Participants include industry, NASA's space partners, other government agencies, standards organizations and academia. Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) is identified as a universal need for all aspects of additive manufacturing.
