Altermagnetic behavior in OsO 2 : Parallels with RuO 2

We investigate and compare the electronic structure of OsO 2 with the extensively studied RuO 2 . Calculations show that OsO 2 exhibits antiferromagnetism and spin splitting driven by crystal symmetry, a characteristic of altermagnetism and similar to RuO 2 . Examination of the Fermi surface, with and without spin-orbit coupling, reveals that OsO 2 has lower Fermi group velocities compared to RuO 2 , suggesting limited charge carrier mobility in OsO 2 . While this characteristic may constrain its performance in high-speed electronic transport applications, it may also enhance stability for spin-based information storage in spintronics. Additionally, comparison of the vibrational properties of these rutile oxide systems demonstrates dynamical stability, typical mass dependent behaviors, and favorable agreement with measured Raman data. The calculated phonon density of states for RuO 2 also agrees with our neutron scattering data. These observations substantiate the implications of the electronic and vibrational behaviors in OsO 2 and RuO 2 , encouraging further investigation of their potential for emerging technological applications.

Lattice Structure and Dynamics of Sparse Molecular Crystals: OsO 4 and RuO 4

OsO 4 and RuO 4 are molecular oxides with unique tetrameric structures and rare +8 oxidation states. Accurately modeling their properties remains challenging for density functional theory (DFT) due to weak intertetramer interactions, which standard functionals fail to capture. Here, in this work, we show that the van der Waals (vdW)-corrected density functional (vdW-DF-optB86b) provides structural parameters that are much closer to experimental values than the standard generalized gradient approximation, with volume predictions that fall within the experimentally observed range. Phonon band structure analysis shows that the inclusion of vdW interactions stabilizes soft phonon modes, highlighting the importance of dispersion corrections for accurate predictions of lattice dynamics. Experimental measurements of the phonon density of states for OsO 4 , obtained via inelastic neutron scattering, demonstrate good agreement with our vdW-DF-optB86b calculations. These results validate OsO 4 and RuO 4 as valuable benchmarks for structural and vibrational calculations via vdW-corrected DFT methods and offer insights for studying the broader class of sparse molecular materials.

Open-Source Offshore Airfoil Summary (V.1.0)

The Open-Source Offshore (OSO) airfoils have been developed for research purposes for offshore wind turbines, offering a set of airfoils that align with modern turbine design requirements and industry design practices without proprietary constraints on research use. The eventual airfoil family will target the IEA 22 MW reference wind turbine, which was originally developed with the FFA airfoils. The two airfoils summarized in Table 1 (OSO-21-WT1 and OSO-30-WT1) started development as part of a family of airfoils being designed to target the IEA 22 MW wind turbine. The criteria used to design these airfoils are summarized in Table 1, which aim to encapsulate requirements of modern airfoils for offshore wind turbine applications, and were developed with feedback from industry and research experts. The airfoils were designed using XFOIL and candidate airfoils were then analyzed in RFOIL, which is considered more accurate than XFoil for high lift predictions of thicker airfoils. The design process for a preliminary family of airfoils is available, including a more detailed explanation of the design requirements and metrics similar to those used for these airfoils. Most of the design criteria are met for these two airfoils, with two exceptions. For both airfoils, the L/D Roughness Loss metric is exceeded (42% > 40% goal) and the desired lift coefficient margin over the design value (“CL_Margin”) was moderately exceeded (0.43 > 0.3) while smooth-stall characteristics (computed) were achieved. Note that all of the metrics were computed using RFOIL, and like other new airfoils, these will need to be experimentally validated at a range of Reynolds numbers. The airfoil coordinates will be shared publicly on Sadia National Laboratories’ public Github repository:

Ternary molecular switching in a single-crystal optical actuator with correlated crystal strain

A growing portfolio of single-crystal optical actuators is forging a new class of photonic materials that hold prospects for quantum technologies. Ruthenium-based complexes that exhibit this phenomenon via SO 2 -linkage photoisomerisation are of particular interest since they display multiple metastable states, once induced by green light; yet, complete photoconversion into each SO 2 -isomeric state is rarely achieved. We discover a new complex, trans-[Ru(SO 2 )(NH 3 ) 4 (4-bromopyridine)]tosylate 2 , that produces 100% photoconverted η 1 -OSO isomeric crystal structures at 90 K, which fully transition into η 2 -(OS)O photoisomers upon warming to 100 K, while the dark-state η 1 -SO 2 structure is wholly recovered by heating the crystal to room temperature. Crystal structures and optical-absorption profiles of each state are captured via in-situ light-induced single-crystal X-ray diffraction and optical-absorption spectroscopy. Results show that both photoisomeric species behave as optical switches, but with distinct optical properties. The photoisomerisation process causes thermally-reversible micro- and nanoscopic crystal strain, as characterised by optical microscopy and in-situ light-induced atomic-force microscopy.

Altermagnetic behavior in OsO2: Parallels with RuO2

This dataset contains input and output files from DFT simulations used to reproduce the electronic and phonon band structures of bulk OsO₂ and RuO₂. The files include data from initial electronic structure and phonon calculations performed with Hubbard-U correction (i.e., Antiferromagnetic, AFM) and without Hubbard-U correction (i.e., Non-magnetic, NM). The electronic structure calculations are provided both with and without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The computed electronic properties are compared with existing literature, while the calculated phonon density of states (PhDOS) is compared with experimental PhDOS.

Lattice structure and dynamics of sparse molecular crystals: OsO4 and RuO4

This dataset contains input and output files from DFT simulations used to reproduce the electronic and phonon calculations of bulk and molecular OsO₄ and RuO₄. The files include data from initial electronic structure and phonon calculations performed using different functionals: PBE, PBEsol, and vdW-DF-optB86b. The computed phonon frequencies are compared with Raman crystal and gas-phase frequencies from existing literature, while the calculated phonon density of states (PhDOS) is compared with experimental PhDOS data.
