Optical anisotropy of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanoplatelets

Abstract The two-dimensional CsPbBr 3 nanoplatelets have a quantum well electronic structure with a band gap tunable with sample thicknesses in discreet steps based upon the number of monolayers. The polarized optical properties of CsPbBr 3 nanoplatelets are studied using fluorescence anisotropy and polarized transient absorption spectroscopies. Polarized spectroscopy shows that they have absorption and emission transitions which are strongly plane-polarized. In particular, photoluminescence excitation and transient absorption measurements reveal a band-edge polarization approaching 0.1, the limit of isotropic two-dimensional ensembles. The degree of anisotropy is found to depend on the thickness of the nanoplatelets: multiple measurements show a progressive decrease in optical anisotropy from 2 to 5 monolayer thick nanoplatelets. In turn, larger cuboidal CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals, are found to have consistently positive anisotropy which may be attributed to symmetry breaking from ideal perovskite cubes. Optical measurements of anisotropy are described with respect to the theoretical framework developed to describe exciton fine structure in these materials. The observed planar absorption and emission are close to predicted values at thinner nanoplatelet sizes and follow the predicted trend in anisotropy with thickness, but with larger anisotropy than theoretical predictions. Dominant planar emission, albeit confined to the thinnest nanoplatelets, is a valuable attribute for enhanced efficiency of light-emitting devices.

Stabilization of Preternatural Barium Oxidation States as an Unexpected Byproduct of β-Decay: Discovery of a New Halide Semiconductor Alloy

137 Cs has a wide range of roles in the nuclear industry. The solid material, safely encapsulated in CsCl as 137 CsCl, is stored as fission product waste from nuclear power production and legacy waste from nuclear weapons production; it has also served as a radiation source in food and sewage irradiators as well as medical devices. However, because of the solubility of the chloride salt and the relatively high specific activity of 137 Cs, damaged or broken capsules can lead to severe radiological accidents. Safe capsule design and material recycling are complicated by the unclear structural evolution during β-decay, which remains ambiguous due to the differing oxidation states of Cs (1+) and Ba (2+). Here, in this study, we use first-principles calculations to investigate the evolving structure–property relationships of Cs 1–x Ba x Cl during β-decay. Despite the well-established 2+ formal oxidation state of alkali-earth metals, we find that Ba 1+ can be stabilized in the form of a mixed-valence alloy at low concentrations. Specifically, we identify three regimes for the β-decay of 137 Cs into CsCl: Ba-doped CsCl (Ba ≤ 14%), wherein Ba has the expected 2+ oxidation state; Cs–Ba–Cl alloys, where Ba has a mix of the usual Ba 2+ and highly unusual Ba 1+ oxidation state in the form of a quasi-disordered mixed-valence alloy (Ba = 25%); and phase separation into a CsCl + BaCl 2 + Ba (m) mechanical mixture, where Ba reverts to its expected 2+ oxidation state (Ba > 25%). Surprisingly, the Cs 0.75 Ba 0.25 Cl mixed-valence alloy is a narrow indirect band gap semiconductor (1.05 eV) despite the insulating nature of both CsCl and BaCl 2 . It also exhibits strongly excitonic polarized optical properties, has glass-like ultralow thermal conductivity (directional average of 0.21 W/mK at 300 K), and shows greater resistance to deformation under both tensile and volumetric strengths compared with the original CsCl structure (e.g., shear and Young’s modulus of 9.04 and 31.62 GPa, respectively). These findings imply that transmutation of 137 Cs leads to highly unusual chemical bonding that stabilizes Ba 1+ in local regions of the quasi-disordered Cs 0.25 Ba 0.75 Cl, resulting in anomalous physical properties. Moreover, this discovery provides valuable insight for safe nuclear waste capsule design, which can aid in preventing environmental or human exposure to radioactive materials.

Optical polarization and spectral properties of the hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae SN 2021bnw and SN 2021fpl

ABSTRACT New optical photometric, spectroscopic, and imaging polarimetry data are combined with publicly available data to study some of the physical properties of the two hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) SN 2021bnw and SN 2021fpl. For each SLSN, the best-fitting parameters obtained from the magnetar model with Modular Open-Source Fitter for Transients do not depart from the range of parameter obtained on other SLSNe discussed in the literature. A spectral analysis with SYN++ shows that SN 2021bnw is a W type, fast evolver, while SN 2021fpl is a 15bn type, slow evolver. The analysis of the polarimetry data obtained on SN 2021fpl at four epochs (+1.8, +20.6, +34.1, and +43.0 d, rest frame) shows >3σ polarization detections in the range of 0.8–1 per cent. A comparison of the spectroscopy data suggests that SN 2021fpl underwent a spectral transition a bit earlier than SN 2015bn, during which, similarly, it could have underwent a polarization transition. The analysis of the polarimetry data obtained on SN 2021bnw does not show any departure from symmetry of the photosphere at an empirical diffusion time-scale of ≈2 (+81.1 d rest frame). This result is consistent with those on the sample of W-type SLSN observed at empirical diffusion time-scale ≤ 1 with that technique, even though it is not clear the effect of limited spectral windows varying from one object to the other. Measurements at higher empirical diffusion time-scale may be needed to see any departure from symmetry as it is discussed in the literature for SN 2017egm.

Multifunctional Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Mn and Fe): Polar Semiconducting Antiferromagnets with Nonlinear Optical Properties

In this work, Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Mn and Fe) polycrystalline and single-crystal materials were prepared with high-temperature solid-state and chemical vapor transport methods, respectively. The polar crystal structure (space group Pmn2 1 ) consists of chains of corner-sharing and distorted CuS 4 , Mn/FeS 4 , and SiS 4 tetrahedra, which is confirmed by Rietveld refinement using neutron powder diffraction data, X-ray single-crystal refinement, electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation (SHG) techniques. Magnetic measurements indicate that both compounds order antiferromagnetically at 8 and 14 K, respectively, which is supported by the temperature-dependent (100–2 K) neutron powder diffraction data. Additional magnetic reflections observed at 2 K can be modeled by magnetic propagation vectors k = (1/2,0,1/2) and k = (1/2,1/2,1/2) for Cu 2 MnSiS 4 and Cu 2 FeSiS 4 , respectively. The refined antiferromagnetic structure reveals that the Mn/Fe spins are canted away from the ac plane by about 14°, with the total magnetic moments of Mn and Fe being 4.1(1) and 2.9(1) μ B , respectively. Both compounds exhibit an SHG response with relatively modest second-order nonlinear susceptibilities. Density functional theory calculations are used to describe the electronic band structures.

Visualizing Orbital Content of Electronic Bands in Anisotropic 2D Semiconducting ReSe 2

Many properties of layered materials change as they are thinned from their bulk forms down to single layers, with examples including indirect-to-direct band gap transition in 2H semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides as well as thickness-dependent changes in the valence band structure in post-transition-metal monochalcogenides and black phosphorus. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the electronic band structure of monolayer ReSe 2 , a semiconductor with a distorted 1T structure and in-plane anisotropy. By changing the polarization of incoming photons, we demonstrate that for ReSe 2 , in contrast to the 2H materials, the out-of-plane transition metal dz2 and chalcogen pz orbitals do not contribute significantly to the top of the valence band, which explains the reported weak changes in the electronic structure of this compound as a function of layer number. We estimate a band gap of 1.7 eV in pristine ReSe 2 using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and explore the implications on the gap following surface doping with potassium. Additionally, a lower bound of 1.4 eV is estimated for the gap in the fully doped case, suggesting that doping-dependent many-body effects significantly affect the electronic properties of ReSe 2 . Our results, supported by density functional theory calculations, provide insight into the mechanisms behind polarization-dependent optical properties of rhenium dichalcogenides and highlight their place among two-dimensional crystals.

Nanostructure‐Derived Antireflectivity in Leafhopper Brochosomes

Understanding how insect‐derived biomaterials interact with light has led to new advances and interdisciplinary insights in entomology and physics. Leafhoppers are insects that coat themselves with highly ordered biological nanostructures known as brochosomes. Brochosomes are thought to provide a range of protective properties to leafhoppers, such as hydrophobicity and antireflectivity, which has inspired the development of synthetic brochosomes that mimic their structures. Despite recent progress, the high antireflective properties of brochosome structures are not fully understood. Herein, a combination of experiments and computational modeling is used to understand the structure‐, material‐, and polarization‐dependent optical properties of brochosomes modeled on the geometries found in three leafhopper species. The results qualitatively represent that light interference interaction with nanostructures naturally occurring in brochosomes is responsible for the spectral tuning and the asymmetric line shape of the reflectance spectra. Whereas prior work has focused on the computational modeling of idealized pitted particles, this work shows that light–matter interactions with brochosome structures can be tuned by varying the geometry of their cage‐like nanoscale features and by changing the arrangement of multiparticle assemblies. Broadly, this work establishes principles for the guided design of new optically active materials inspired by these unique insect nanostructures.

CosTuuM: Polarized Thermal Dust Emission by Magnetically Oriented Spheroidal Grains

We present the new open-source C++-based Python library CosTuuM that can be used to generate infrared absorption and emission coefficients for arbitrary mixtures of spheroidal dust grains that are (partially) aligned with a magnetic field. We outline the algorithms underlying the software, demonstrate the accuracy of our results using benchmarks from literature, and use our tool to investigate some commonly used approximative recipes. We find that the linear polarization fraction for a partially aligned dust grain mixture can be accurately represented by an appropriate linear combination of perfectly aligned grains and grains that are randomly oriented, but that the commonly used picket fence alignment breaks down for short wavelengths. We also find that for a fixed dust grain size, the absorption coefficients and linear polarization fraction for a realistic mixture of grains with various shapes cannot both be accurately represented by a single representative grain with a fixed shape, but that instead an average over an appropriate shape distribution should be used. Insufficient knowledge of an appropriate shape distribution is the main obstacle in obtaining accurate optical properties. CosTuuM is available as a standalone Python library and can be used to generate optical properties to be used in radiative transfer applications.

Spectra-Orthogonal Optical Anisotropy in Wafer-Scale Molecular Crystal Monolayers

Controlling the spectral and polarization response of two-dimensional (2D) crystals is vital for developing ultrathin platforms for compact optoelectronic devices. However, independently tuning optical anisotropy and spectral response remains challenging in conventional semiconductors due to the intertwined nature of their lattice and electronic structures. Here, we report spectra-orthogonal optical anisotropy─where polarization anisotropy is tuned independently of spectral response─in wafer-scale, one-atom-thick 2D molecular crystal (2DMC) monolayers synthesized on monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) crystals. Utilizing the concomitant spectral consistency and structural tunability of perylene derivatives, we demonstrate tunable optical polarization anisotropy in 2DMCs with similar spectral profiles, as confirmed by room-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and cross-polarized reflectance microscopy. Additional angle-dependent analysis of the single-crystal and polycrystalline molecular domains reveals an epitaxial relationship between the 2DMC and TMD. In conclusion, our results establish a scalable, molecule-based 2D crystalline platform for unique and tunable functionalities unattainable in covalent 2D solids.

Pd and octahedra do not get along: Square planar [PdS 4 ] units in non-centrosymmetric La 6 PdSi 2 S 14

Non-linear optical (NLO) materials require a balance of high second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal and laser damage threshold (LDT), as well as phase matchable behavior. Herein, we report a new member of the (RE) 6 (TM) x (Tt) 2 Q 14 family of compounds, La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 , which, unlike all other reported TM analogues crystallizing in hexagonal P6 3 space group, crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic P2 1 space group. The crystal structure contains chains of edge-sharing distorted square planar [PdS 4 ] units. The square-planar coordination of Pd in La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 exhibits remarkable NLO properties with high SHG (3.7 × AgGaS 2 ) and LDT (3 × AgGaS 2 ) values as well as phase matchability. This shows the promise of novel materials with distorted structural motifs for enhanced NLO properties. Further, upon formation of bimetallic chiral sulfides containing both Cu and Pd, Cu occupies the opposite faces of the octahedra forming [CuS 3 ] units while Pd can be stabilized in the center of PdS 6 octahedra in the hexagonal P6 3 crystal structure of La 6 Pd 0.5 CuSi 2 S 14 . This suggests that it is possible to form mixed metal systems which could further enhance NLO properties by incorporation of additional structural distortions.

Momentum-Space Observation of Optically Excited Nonthermal Electrons in Graphene with Persistent Pseudospin Polarization

The unique optical properties of graphene, with broadband absorption and ultrafast response, make it a critical component of optoelectronic and spintronic devices. Using time-resolved momentum microscopy with high data rate and high dynamic range, we report momentum-space measurements of electrons promoted to the graphene conduction band with visible light and their subsequent relaxation. Here, we observe a pronounced nonthermal distribution of nascent photoexcited electrons with lattice pseudospin polarization in remarkable agreement with results of simple tight-binding theory. By varying the excitation fluence, we vary the relative importance of electron-electron vs electron-phonon scattering in the relaxation of the initial distribution. Increasing the excitation fluence results in increased noncollinear electron-electron scattering and reduced pseudospin polarization, although up-scattered electrons retain a degree of polarization. These detailed momentum-resolved electron dynamics in graphene demonstrate the capabilities of high-performance time-resolved momentum microscopy in the study of 2D materials and can inform the design of graphene devices.

Strong crystal field splitting and polarization dependence observed in the emission from Eu3+ ions doped into GaN

Eu-doped GaN is a promising material with a wide array of potential applications in optoelectronics, optogenetics, micro displays and quantum computing. While this system has been the subject of intense investigation for the last two decades, several questions still remain about certain aspects of its optical properties, such as the polarization dependence of the optical transitions, and the coupling between the 4f-electron configuration and bulk phonons, as well and the appearance of local phonon modes. Moreover, the origin of certain emission peaks remains under debate in the literature. In this proceeding, the results of a systematic series of “site-selective” photoluminescence measurements are presented, where the properties of pulsed and continuous-wave laser excitation, such as polarization and intensity, were controlled.

Particle dynamics and geometric optics in Chern–Simons black holes

Highlights: • Black holes in Chern–Simons modified gravity have been studied. • The effects of the coupling constant of the Chern–Simons gravity on some physical quantities have been investigated. • The dependence of Hawking mass and Penrose process on the coupling constant is studied. • Rotation of the polarization vector is also studied for dependence on the Chern–Simons coupling constant. In this paper we study the effects of the coupling constant of the Chern–Simons modified gravity on some physical properties of black holes. The Hawking mass is one of the proposed definitions of quasilocal mass. We find that, for slowly rotating Chern–Simons black holes, the Hawking mass is independent of the coupling constant. Next, we show the dependence on the centre of mass energy, for two neutral colliding particles, of coupling constant and the rotation parameter. We also investigate energy extraction through Penrose process and find that the energy gain and efficiency of the Penrose process are independent of this coupling constant. Rotation of the polarization vector is also studied for dependence on the Chern–Simons coupling constant.

The Structural Origin of Chiroptical Properties in Perovskite Nanocrystals with Chiral Organic Ligands

Abstract The authors investigate how chiral ligands attached to perovskite nanocrystal (PNC) surfaces structurally distort the perovskite lattice. Chiral electro‐optical properties of the resulting PNCs are demonstrated through the fabrication of a circularly polarized light (CPL) detector with a discrimination of up to 14% between left‐ and right‐handed CPL. Both experimental and electronic‐structure‐based simulations are combined to provide insights into the interactions (both structural and electronic) between chiral organic ligands and PNCs. The major finding is a centro‐asymmetric distortion of the surface lattice that penetrates up to five atomic unit cells deep into the PNCs, which is the likely cause of the chiral‐optical properties. Spin‐polarized transport through chiral‐PNCs results from the chiral‐induced spin selectivity effect and amplifies the discrimination between left and right‐handed CPL as is experimentally demonstrated in the detectors.

Anisotropic optical and magnetic response in self-assembled TiN–CoFe 2 nanocomposites

Transition metal nitrides (e.g., TiN) have shown tremendous promise in optical metamaterials for nanophotonic devices due to their plasmonic properties comparable to noble metals and superior high temperature stability. Vertically aligned nanocomposites (VANs) offer a great platform for combining two dissimilar functional materials with a one-step deposition technique toward multifunctionality integration and strong structural/property anisotropy. Here, we report a two-phase nanocomposite design combining ferromagnetic CoFe 2 nanosheets in the plasmonic TiN matrix as a new hybrid plasmonic metamaterial. The hybrid metamaterials exhibit anisotropic optical and magnetic responses, as well as a pronounced magneto-optical coupling response evidenced by Magneto-optic Kerr Effect measurement, owing to the novel vertically aligned structure. This work demonstrates a new TiN-based metamaterial with anisotropic properties and multifunctionality toward light polarization modulation, optical switching, and integrated optics.

Molecular Diradical Spin Qubits in a Crystalline Host as a Platform for Quantum Sensing

Doping a luminescent tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl diradical m (TTM) 2 into a host crystal of its diamagnetic precursor m (HTTM) 2 creates a molecular color center with enhanced optical-spin interface properties important for quantum sensing. Optical polarization of the |T 0 ⟩ sublevel of the diradical triplet ground state is achieved by spin-selective intersystem crossing from the |T + ⟩ and |T – ⟩ sublevels of the triplet excited state at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. Coherent spin control of m (TTM) 2 doped into m (HTTM) 2 using pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy results in a 10-fold improvement in ODMR contrast over that observed for randomly oriented m (TTM)2 using continuous-wave ODMR. The diradical doped crystal powders achieve spin coherence times of 2.8, 3.4, and 7.4 μs at 294, 85, and 5 K, respectively. The diradical photoluminescence is sensitive to weak applied magnetic fields independent of temperature, excitation wavelength, and dopant concentration, providing a promising pathway toward robust quantum sensing of anisotropic magnetic fields under ambient conditions.

First-Principles Study of Ferroelectric and Optical Properties in Derivatives of Thiourea

Organic ferroelectric materials in the form of molecular crystals are promising alternatives to well-known ferroelectric perovskite oxides due to their structural flexibility, tunability, and ease of processing. First-principles density functional theory calculations combined with group theory analyses are employed in this work to discuss polar nature of a class of derivatives of thiourea: CH 4 N 2 A where A = O, S, Se, and Te. Further, optical properties in the UV range along with thermodynamic and dynamic stability of such materials are also evaluated in the study. We find that CH 4 N 2 Te with bandgap energy of ~3.33 eV shows large spontaneous polarization of P = 10.92 μC/cm 2 . The electronic and optical properties become tunable under strain.

Radically Tunable n-Type Organic Semiconductor via Polymorph Control

Polymorphism has emerged as an important design consideration in organic semiconductors (OSCs). Previously, in many OSCs, even small changes in molecular stacking can cause drastic changes to the optical and electronic properties. However, investigation into n-type semiconductors has significantly lagged behind their p-type counterparts. In this work, we present the prolific polymorphism of 2-dimensional quinoidal terthiophene (2DQTT-o-B) and systematically investigate each of 5 polymorphs, 3 of which have been previously unreported. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction provided a key method to understanding the structure of each polymorph. Via the polymorphic transitions mapped, we tuned the electron mobility by 5 orders of magnitude, from 5.63 × 10 –5 to 0.22 cm 2 V –1 s –1 . These were accompanied by modifications to the optical properties, namely we observed substantial differences in the refractive index noted by intensity differences under polarized optical microscopy and a large shift in optical band gap from 1.18 eV up to 1.40 eV. Lastly, we suggest that changes to these properties may be related to the unique quinoidal to aromatic transition observed in quinoidal molecules.
