Order fractionalization in a Kitaev-Kondo model

We describe a mechanism for order fractionalization in a two-dimensional Kondo lattice model, in which electrons interact with a gapless spin liquid of Majorana fermions described by the Yao-Lee (YL) model. When the Kondo coupling to the conduction electrons exceeds a critical value, the model develops a superconducting instability into a state with a a spinor order parameter with charge 4 and spin ( = 1 2. The broken symmetry state develops a gapless Majorana Dirac cone in the bulk. By including an appropriate gauge string, we can show that the charge 4, spinorial order develops off-diagonal long range order that allows electrons to coherently tunnel arbitrarily long distances through the spin liquid.

Breakdown of order fractionalization in the CPT model

Here, we present an analysis of the half-filled CPT model, an analytically tractable Kondo lattice model with Yao-Lee spin-spin interactions on a 3D hyperoctagon lattice, proposed by Coleman, Panigrahi, and Tsvelik. Previous studies have established that the CPT model exhibits odd-frequency triplet superconductivity and order fractionalization. Through asymptotic analyses in the small- and large- Kondo coupling limits, we identify a quantum critical point at , marking a transition from a superconductor to a Kondo insulator. By estimating the vison gap energy to account for thermal gauge fluctuations, we determine the energy scales governing the thermal breakdown of order fractionalization. Moreover, at large the Kondo insulator undergoes orbital decoupling, leading to the formation of a decoupled Kitaev orbital liquid. These findings and analogies with the -gauged model lead us to propose a tentative phase diagram for the CPT model at half-filling.

Solvable 3D Kondo Lattice Exhibiting Pair Density Wave, Odd-Frequency Pairing, and Order Fractionalization

The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1 2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair density wave formation and order fractionalization. The ground-state state is a pair density wave with a fractionalized charge e, S = 1/2 order parameter, formed between electrons and Majorana fermions.

Identifiability and predictability of integer- and fractional-order epidemiological models using physics-informed neural networks

Here we analyze a plurality of epidemiological models through the lens of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) that enable us to identify time-dependent parameters and data-driven fractional differential operators. In particular, we consider several variations of the classical susceptible-infectious-removed (SIR) model by introducing more compartments and fractional-order and time-delay models. We report the results for the spread of COVID-19 in New York City, Rhode Island and Michigan states and Italy, by simultaneously inferring the unknown parameters and the unobserved dynamics. For integer-order and time-delay models, we fit the available data by identifying time-dependent parameters, which are represented by neural networks. In contrast, for fractional differential models, we fit the data by determining different time-dependent derivative orders for each compartment, which we represent by neural networks. We investigate the structural and practical identifiability of these unknown functions for different datasets, and quantify the uncertainty associated with neural networks and with control measures in forecasting the pandemic.

On the fractional Laplacian of variable order

We present a novel definition of variable-order fractional Laplacian on R n based on a natural generalization of the standard Riesz potential. Our definition holds for values of the fractional parameter spanning the entire open set (0, n/2). We then discuss some properties of the fractional Poisson’s equation involving this operator and we compute the corresponding Green’s function, for which we provide some instructive examples for specific problems.

Accelerating gradient descent and Adam via fractional gradients

Here we propose a class of novel fractional-order optimization algorithms. We define a fractional-order gradient via the Caputo fractional derivatives that generalizes integer-order gradient. We refer it to as the Caputo fractional-based gradient, and develop an efficient implementation to compute it. A general class of fractional-order optimization methods is then obtained by replacing integer-order gradients with the Caputo fractional-based gradients. To give concrete algorithms, we consider gradient descent (GD) and Adam, and extend them to the Caputo fractional GD (CfGD) and the Caputo fractional Adam (CfAdam). We demonstrate the superiority of CfGD and CfAdam on several large scale optimization problems that arise from scientific machine learning applications, such as ill-conditioned least squares problem on real-world data and the training of neural networks involving non-convex objective functions. Numerical examples show that both CfGD and CfAdam result in acceleration over GD and Adam, respectively. We also derive error bounds of CfGD for quadratic functions, which further indicate that CfGD could mitigate the dependence on the condition number in the rate of convergence and results in significant acceleration over GD.

Fractional Modeling in Action: A Survey of Nonlocal Models for Subsurface Transport, Turbulent Flows, and Anomalous Materials

Modeling of phenomena such as anomalous transport via fractional-order differential equations has been established as an effective alternative to partial differential equations, due to the inherent ability to describe large-scale behavior with greater efficiency than fully-resolved classical models. In this review article, we first provide a broad overview of fractional-order derivatives with a clear emphasis on the stochastic processes that underlie their use. We then survey three exemplary application areas – subsurface transport, turbulence, and anomalous materials – in which fractional-order differential equations provide accurate and predictive models. For each area, we report on the evidence of anomalous behavior that justifies the use of fractional-order models, and survey both foundational models as well as more expressive state-of-the-art models. We also propose avenues for future research, including more advanced and physically sound models, as well as tools for calibration and discovery of fractional-order models.

A fractional model for anomalous diffusion with increased variability: Analysis, algorithms and applications to interface problems

Fractional equations have become the model of choice in several applications where heterogeneities at the microstructure result in anomalous diffusive behavior at the macroscale. Here, we introduce a new fractional operator characterized by a doubly-variable fractional order and possibly truncated interactions. Under certain conditions on the model parameters and on the regularity of the fractional order we show that the corresponding Poisson problem is well-posed. Additionally, we introduce a finite element discretization and describe an efficient implementation of the finite-element matrix assembly in the case of piecewise constant fractional order. Through several numerical tests, we illustrate the improved descriptive power of this new operator across media interfaces. Furthermore, we present one-dimensional and two-dimensional h-convergence results that show that the variable-order model has the same convergence behavior as the constant-order model.

The extended auxiliary equation mapping method to determine novel exact solitary wave solutions of the nonlinear fractional PDEs

Abstract In this paper, some new nonlinear fractional partial differential equations (PDEs) have been considered.Three models are including the space-time fractional-order Boussinesq equation, space-time (2 + 1)-dimensional breaking soliton equations, and space-time fractional-order SRLW equation describe the behavior of these equations in the diverse applications. Meanwhile, the fractional derivatives in the sense of β -derivative are defined. Some fractional PDEs will convert to the considered ordinary differential equations by the help of transformation of β -derivative. These equations are analyzed utilizing an integration scheme, namely, the extended auxiliary equation mapping method. The different kinds of traveling wave solutions, solitary, topological, dark soliton, periodic, kink, and rational, fall out as a by-product of this scheme. Finally, the existence of the solutions for the constraint conditions is also shown. The outcome indicates that some fractional PDEs are used as a growing finding in the engineering sciences, mathematical physics, and so forth.

Analysis of Anisotropic Nonlocal Diffusion Models: Well-posedness of Fractional Problems for Anomalous Transport

We analyze the well-posedness of an anisotropic, nonlocal diffusion equation. Establishing an equivalence between weighted and unweighted anisotropic nonlocal diffusion operators in the vein of unified nonlocal vector calculus, we apply our analysis to a class of fractional-order operators and present rigorous estimates for the solution of the corresponding anisotropic anomalous diffusion equation. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to the anisotropic diffusion-advection equation and prove well-posedness for fractional orders s ∊ [0.5, 1). We also present an application of the advection-diffusion equation to anomalous transport of solutes.

An optimization-based approach to parameter learning for fractional type nonlocal models

Nonlocal operators of fractional type are a popular modeling choice for applications that do not adhere to classical diffusive behavior; however, one major challenge in nonlocal simulations is the selection of model parameters. In this study we propose an optimization-based approach to parameter identification for fractional models with an optional truncation radius. We formulate the inference problem as an optimal control problem where the objective is to minimize the discrepancy between observed data and an approximate solution of the model, and the control variables are the fractional order and the truncation length. For the numerical solution of the minimization problem we propose a gradient-based approach, where we enhance the numerical performance by an approximation of the bilinear form of the state equation and its derivative with respect to the fractional order. Several numerical tests in one and two dimensions illustrate the theoretical results and show the robustness and applicability of our method.

A series representation of the discrete fractional Laplace operator of arbitrary order

Although fractional powers of non-negative operators have received much attention in recent years, there is still little known about their behavior if real-valued exponents are greater than one. In this article, we define and study the discrete fractional Laplace operator of arbitrary real-valued positive order. Here a series representation of the discrete fractional Laplace operator for positive non-integer powers is developed. Its convergence to a series representation of a known case of positive integer powers is proven as the power tends to the integer value. Furthermore, we show that the new representation for arbitrary real-valued positive powers of the discrete Laplace operator is consistent with existing theoretical results.
