Terahertz nano-imaging of metal-insulator transition in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7

The osmate pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 supports an antiferromagnet insulator ground state with an all-in/all-out (AIAO) spin ordering at low temperature. Above 225 K, Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 becomes a paramagnetic metal whereas the mechanism of this metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) remains elusive. In this letter, we use cryogenic near-field technique operating at terahertz frequencies to study the evolution of low-energy response across the MIT. We observed a systematic variation of the magnitude of nano-THz signal across the transition, consistent with the trend in the direct-current conductivity. Conducting domain walls that dominate the nano-scale landscape of the conductivity of a closely related AIAO system Nd 2 Ir 2 O 7 are not apparent in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7

Spin and orbital excitations through the metal-to-insulator transition in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 probed with high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Here, high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements (ΔE=46meV) have been performed on Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 through the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). A magnetic excitation at 125 meV evolves continuously through the MIT, in agreement with recent Raman-scattering results, and provides further confirmation for an all-in all-out magnetic ground state. Asymmetry of this feature is likely a result of coupling between the electronic and the magnetic degrees of freedom. We also observe a broad continuum of interband excitations centered at 0.3 eV energy loss. This is indicative of significant hybridization between Os 5d and O 2p states and the concurrent itinerant nature of the system. In turn, this suggests a possible breakdown of the free-ion model for Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 .

Local site behavior of the 5$d$ and 4$f$ ions in the frustrated pyrochlore Ho 2 Os 2 O 7

The pyrochlore osmate Ho 2 Os 2 O 7 is a candidate material for a fragile J=0 local singlet ground state, however little is known regarding the single-ion behavior of either the Os or Ho ions. To address this we present polarized neutron powder diffraction (PNPD) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements that separately probe the local site behavior of the Os and Ho ions. The PNPD results are dominated by Ho 3+ scattering and the analysis reveals local site susceptibility behavior consistent with spin ice materials. Complimentary unpolarized neutron powder diffraction show an ordered spin ice ground state in an applied magnetic field. To isolate the Os 4+ single-ion behavior we present resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the osmium L-edge. Analysis of the RIXS spectra parameterize the spin-orbit coupling (0.35 eV), Hund’s coupling (0.27 eV) and trigonal distortion (-0.17 eV). Here, the results are considered within the context of a J=0 model and possible departures from this through structural distortions, excitonic interactions and 5d-4f interactions between the Os ion and the surrounding Ho lattice. The experimental methodology employed highlights the complimentary information available in rare earth based 5d pyrochlores from distinct neutron and x-ray scattering techniques that allow for the isolation and determination of the behavior of the different ions.

First-principles studies of the unconventional spin-phonon coupling mediated by spin-orbit coupling in pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7

Here, we perform systematic first-principles calculations to investigate the spin-phonon coupling (SPC) mediated by spin-orbit coupling in pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 which has the peculiar all-in-all-out noncollinear magnetic ground state. A large SPC coefficient up to 34 cm –1 is found, showing the potential of using this material in thermal spin devices. We further split the SPC coefficients to contributions from symmetric exchange interaction, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and the single ion anisotropy. Unlike what was assumed in previous studies, the DMI contributions are rather important for most modes. These results provide insights for the understanding of the SPC in 5d transition metal oxides and useful guidance for the search of excellent spin caloritronic materials.

A continuous metal-insulator transition driven by spin correlations

While Mott insulators induced by Coulomb interactions are a well-recognized class of metal-insulator transitions, insulators purely driven by spin correlations are much less common, as the reduced energy scale often invites competition from other degrees of freedom. Here, we demonstrate a clean example of a spin-correlation-driven metal-insulator transition in the all-in-all-out pyrochlore antiferromagnet Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 , where the lattice symmetry is preserved by the antiferromagnetism. After the antisymmetric linear magnetoresistance from conductive, ferromagnetic domain walls is removed experimentally, the bulk Hall coefficient reveals four Fermi surfaces of both electron and hole types, sequentially departing the Fermi level with decreasing temperature below the Néel temperature, T N = 227 K. In Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 , the charge gap of a continuous metal-insulator transition opens only at T ~ 10 K << T N . The insulating mechanism parallels the Slater picture, but without a folded Brillouin zone, and contrasts sharply with Mott insulators and spin density waves, where the electronic gap opens above and at T N , respectively.

Heat capacity of URu 2 - x Os x Si 2 at low temperatures

Here we perform measurements of the heat capacity as a function of temperature on URu 2-x Os x Si 2 alloys. Our experimental results show that the critical temperature of the second-order phase transition increases while the value of the Sommerfeld coefficient in the ordered state decreases with an increase in osmium concentration. We also observe an increase in the values of the heat capacity at the critical temperature as well as a broadening of the critical fluctuation region with an increase in x. We analyze the experimental data using the Haule-Kotliar model which, in particular, identifies the “hidden order” transition in the parent material UR u2 Si 2 as a transition to a state with a nonzero hexadecapole moment. We demonstrate that our experimental results are consistent with the predictions of that model.

High-Pressure Synthesis of Metal–Inorganic Frameworks Hf 4 N 20 •N 2 , WN 8 •N 2 , and Os 5 N 28 •3N 2 with Polymeric Nitrogen Linkers

Polynitrides are intrinsically thermodynamically unstable at ambient conditions and require peculiar synthetic approaches. Now, a one-step synthesis of metal–inorganic frameworks Hf 4 N 20 •N 2 , WN 8 •N 2 , and Os 5 N 28 •3N 2 via direct reactions between elements in a diamond anvil cell at pressures exceeding 100 GPa is reported. The porous frameworks (Hf 4 N 20 , WN 8 , and Os 5 N 28 ) are built from transition-metal atoms linked either by polymeric polydiazenediyl (polyacetylene-like) nitrogen chains or through dinitrogen units. Triply bound dinitrogen molecules occupy channels of these frameworks. Owing to conjugated polydiazenediyl chains, these compounds exhibit metallic properties. The high-pressure reaction between Hf and N 2 also leads to a non-centrosymmetric polynitride Hf 2 N 11 that features double-helix catena-poly[tetraz-1-ene-1,4-diyl] nitrogen chains [–N–N–N=N–] ∞ .

Hydrogen Atom Abstraction from an Os II (NH 3 ) 2 Complex Generates an Os IV (NH 2 ) 2 Complex: Experimental and Computational Analysis of the N–H Bond Dissociation Free Energies and Reactivity

We report double hydrogen atom abstraction from (TMP)Os II (NH 3 ) 2 (TMP = tetramesitylporphyrin) with phenoxyl or nitroxyl radicals leads to (TMP)Os IV (NH 2 ) 2 . This unusual bis(amide) complex is diamagnetic and displays an N-H resonance at 12.0 ppm in its 1 H NMR spectrum. 1 H- 15 N correlation experiments identified a 15 N NMR spectroscopic resonance at –267 ppm. Experimental reactivity studies and density functional theory calculations support relatively weak N-H bonds of 73.3 kcal/mol for (TMP)Os II (NH 3 ) 2 and 74.2 kcal/mol for (TMP)Os III (NH 3 )(NH 2 ). Cyclic voltammetry experiments provide an estimate of the pK a of [(TMP)Os III (NH 3 ) 2 ] + . In the presence of Barton’s base, a current enhancement is observed at the Os(III/II) couple, consistent with an ECE event. Spectroscopic experiments confirmed (TMP)Os IV (NH 2 ) 2 as the product of bulk electrolysis. Double hydrogen atom abstraction is influenced by π donation from the amides of (TMP)Os IV (NH 2 ) 2 into the d orbitals of the Os center, favoring the formation of (TMP)Os IV (NH 2 ) 2 over N-N coupling. This π donation leads to a Jahn-Teller distortion that splits the energy levels of the d xz and d yz orbitals of Os, results in a low spin electron configuration, and leads to minimal aminyl character on the N atoms, rendering (TMP)Os IV (NH 2 ) 2 unreactive towards amide-amide coupling.
