Problems of the design of low-noise input devices

An analysis is given of the requirements placed on the elements of parametric centimeter waveband amplifiers for achievement of minimal noise temperatures. A low-noise semiconductor parametric amplifier using germanium parametric diodes for a receiver operating in the 4 GHz band was developed and tested confirming the possibility of satisfying all requirements.

A Discussion of the Failure of a Quad Diode Module and Efforts to Assure the Flight Spares

In 2019 the International Space Station (ISS) experienced an on on-orbit failure that affected 1 of 28 Battery Charge Discharge Units (BCDUs). Telemetry pointed to a short circuit failure of a Power Rectifier Quad Diode Module. Astronauts removed the failed unit from service which was then returned to Earth for failure analysis. The failure analysis confirmed that the quad diode module had failed short circuit. The investigation identified silver dendrites had grown on the insulated, sloped edge of the mesa semiconductor die of the failed diode and also a 2nd diode in the same quad diode module. Voids between the diode’s protective encapsulating ring and the die provided space within which dendrites were able to form and cause catastrophic failure. The NASA Engineering & Safety Center (NESC) convened a EEE Parts Sub-Team to investigate root cause and to assist with risk assessment for all of the flight diode modules (4 distinct production lots) and the flight spares (from a 5th lot). Analysis of the original diode manufacturer’s read and record screening test data identified some lots which contained diodes with parametric instabilities that could signal conditions suited for silver dendrite formation. Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray screening inspection was performed on flight spare modules to identify diodes that do not exhibit voids between the edge of die and encapsulating ring as a mitigation against dendrite formation.

Parametric Performance of a Spiral-Artery, Liquid-Trap-Diode Heat Pipe

A series of parametric investigations are described which determine the effect of various fluid charges on the performance of a 0.635-cm-diam spiral-artery, liquid-trap diode in both the forward and reverse modes. Specific parameters such as forward- and reverse-mode conductances, shutdown times and energies, and recovery to forward-model operation, are evaluated for ethane as a working fluid in the temperature range 170 K to 220 K. Results indicate that the heat pipe will not reliably start up in the forward mode. However, startup can be initiated when preceded by a diode reversal. Also included are data which show the susceptibility of the diode to fluid charge and tilt. The optimum fluid charge was found to be 2.67 g and transport capability at this charge was in excess of 1200 W-cm at 200 K. The diode in the reverse mode exhibited a rapid shutdown (within 9 min) with a shutdown energy of 1150 J (0.32 Wh).

Aging Mechanisms of Broad Area ~800 nm Laser Diodes

Here, this work presents a comprehensive study of early aging behavior (<500 hr) in ~800 nm, phosphide-based laser diodes grown by solid-source MBE with different oxygen concentration levels incorporated into the diode epitaxial layers during growth. The data indicate that lasing characteristics prior to aging are degraded by oxygen introduction, but the gradual power degradation rate after the onset of aging is not a strong function of oxygen at these concentration levels. Devices with oxygen concentrations of ~2.5 × 10 15 cm -3 showed significantly longer delay before the onset of aging (incubation time) than devices with less than 1 × 10 15 cm -3 oxygen. Generation-Recombination current and Laser Beam Induced Current measurements indicate that defect densities and aggregation are suppressed at the facets by oxygen, which can explain longer incubation times. Diagnostic data and parametric fits to diode simulation models show that increased cavity optical loss and defect density are primarily responsible for gradual power degradation during aging, rather than changes in nonradiative recombination. Mechanisms are proposed that explain this behavior, based on density functional theory (DFT) simulations and known recombination-enhanced defect generation phenomena.

Diode-pumped Ho:Tm:YLF laser pumping and AgGaSe2 parametric oscillator

Tuning of both the pump laser, a Ho:Tm:YLF laser operating on the 5 I 7 - 5 I 8 transition, and an AgGaSe2 parametric oscillator has been demonstrated. Tuning of the Ho:Tm:YLF laser is complicated but not frustrated by the existence of both CO2 and H2O lines in the vicinity of the laser transition. Tuning of the parametric oscillator was achieved by tuning of the pump laser. Injection seeding of the parametric oscillator on the nonresonant signal was also demonstrated. In addition, the measured efficiencies of the parametric oscillator were compared by two different methods, measuring the parametric-oscillator output energy and measuring the energy depleted from the pump. By comparison of these measurements, the intrinsic efficiency of the parametric oscillator cab be determined

A user oriented computer program for the analysis of microwave mixers, and a study of the effects of the series inductance and diode capacitance on the performance of some simple mixers

A user oriented computer program for analyzing microwave and millimeter wave mixers with a single Schottky barrier diode of known I-V and C-V characteristics is described. The program first performs a nonlinear analysis to determine the diode conductance and capacitance waveforms produced by the local oscillator. A small signal linear analysis is then used to find the conversion loss, port impedances, and input noise temperature of the mixer. Thermal noise from the series resistance of the diode and shot noise from the periodically pumped current in the diode conductance are considered. The effects of the series inductance and diode capacitance on the performance of some simple mixer circuits using a conventional Schottky diode, a Schottky diode in which there is no capacitance variation, and a Mott diode are studied. It is shown that the parametric effects of the voltage dependent capacitance of a conventional Schottky diode may be either detrimental or beneficial depending on the diode and circuit parameters.

Design, fabrication, and testing of a cryogenic thermal diode

Cryogenic heat pipe diode applications and a new heat pipe geometry are discussed. This new geometry employs excess liquid to block the vapor space of the evaporator and part of the transport section during reverse mode conditions. An orifice plate is positioned in the pipe at the blocking meniscus location, with the opening arranged to permit proper liquid distribution in both ground tests and zero g operation. Experimental data are presented for a room temperature heat pipe modified to operate as a blocking orifice diode. The test results verify feasibility of the blocking orifice technique with the diode having a rapid shutoff characteristic. The selection of a diode for fabrication and test was based mainly on a parametric investigation of the liquid trap and liquid blockage techniques. The blocking orifice form of liquid blockage was selected for the cryogenic diode based on its high throughput, small reservoir requirement, and small energy and time required for shutoff.

OPO performance with a long pulse length, single frequency Nd:YAG laser pump

With the advent of new nonlinear materials and single-frequency pump sources, there is renewed interest in optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). A single-mode diode-laser-pumped monolithic Nd:YAG nonplanar ring laser that is both amplified and frequency doubled is used to pump a monolithic MgO:LiNbO3 pulsed singly resonant OPO. The OPO signal output was temperature tuned from 834 to 958 nm, producing an idler tuning from 1.47 to 1.2 microns. Efforts toward a CW all-solid-state doubly resonant OPO are also described.

Nd:LNA laser optical pumping of He-4 - Application to space magnetometers

Results obtained from laser pumping in a helium magnetometer sensor, using a tunable Nd:LNA laser pumped with a high-power diode laser, are reported. It is shown that it was possible to observe both the Hanle signals and the n = 0, p = 1 parametric resonance by monitoring the pumping radiation passing through the cell. As the diode laser-pumped Nd:LNA laser was tuned through the D0, D1, and D2 transitions, three distinct resonance signals were produced. A comparison of the slope of lamp-pumped signals and laser-pumped D1 signals showed that, under otherwise identical conditions, the slope of the D1 laser signal was 45 times greater than the lamp-pumped signal.

All-Solid-State UV Transmitter Development for Ozone Sensing Applications

In this paper, recent progress made in the development of an all-solid-state UV transmitter suitable for ozone sensing applications from space based platforms is discussed. A nonlinear optics based UV setup based on Rotated Image Singly Resonant Twisted Rectangle (RISTRA) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) module was effectively coupled to a diode pumped, single longitudinal mode, conductively cooled, short-pulsed, high-energy Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm with 50 Hz PRF. An estimated 10 mJ/pulse with ~10% conversion efficiency at 320 nm has been demonstrated limited only by the pump pulse spatial profile. The current arrangement has the potential for obtaining greater than 200 mJ/pulse. Previously, using a flash-lamp pumped Nd:YAG laser with round, top-hat profile, up to 24% IR-UV conversion efficiency was achieved with the same UV module. Efforts are underway to increase the IR-UV conversion efficiency of the all solid-state setup by modifying the pump laser spatial profile along with incorporating improved OPO crystals.
