SIGNAL TRANSMISSION

Phase-lock demodulation of a PM signal contaminated with incidental AM

Signals from phase-modulated satellite transmitters usually exhibit some degree of incidental amplitude modulation. The effects of incidental AM are analyzed when this type of signal is demodulated by a phase-lock receiver which does not employ a limiter preceding the loop phase detector. The presence of incidental AM causes a reduction in the receiver output signal-to-noise ratio. The tolerable level of AM decreases in proportion to the phase modulation index Beta. For a square-wave modulating signal, a 1 db reduction results at the receiver PM channel output when Beta = 1 radian and the percentage of AM = 23, Beta = 1.2 radians and the percentage of AM = 16, or Beta = 1.5 radians and the percentage of AM = 4. Although only the PM channel of the receiver is used ordinarily, utilizing both the AM and PM channel by summing offers an improvement in S/N relative to the S/N ratio of the PM channel if the percentage of incidental AM is greater than fifteen.

Phase-locked loop FM demodulator

A conventional phase-locked loop is improved by replacing its phase detector with one comprising a linear ramp generator and a sample-and-hold circuit, thus eliminating the need for a lowpass loop filter, although the output of the sample-and-hold circuit may be filtered in the case of a very low level modulating signal on the incoming FM signal, but then filtering is not a difficult problem as in a conventional phase-locked loop. The result is FM demodulation by zero-order estimation. For FM demodulation by first-order estimation, the arithmetic difference between adjacent samples is formed, and using a second sample-and-hold circuit an arithmetic difference signal is produced as an input to a second ramp generator that is reset after each sampling cycle to generate a ramp the slope of which is a function of the arithmetic difference signal stored in the second sample-and-hold circuit. The ramp thus generated by the second ramp generator is arithmetically summed with the zero-estimation signal from the first sample-and-hold circuit to form a first-order estimation signal. Filtering such a first-order estimation signal is less of a problem than filtering a zero-order estimation signal.

An all digital phase locked loop for FM demodulation.

A phase-locked loop designed with all-digital circuitry which avoids certain problems, and a digital voltage controlled oscillator algorithm are described. The system operates synchronously and performs all required digital calculations within one sampling period, thereby performing as a real-time special-purpose computer. The SNR ratio is computed for frequency offsets and sinusoidal modulation, and experimental results verify the theoretical calculations.

Linear phase demodulator including a phase locked loop with auxiliary feedback loop

A phase modulated wave that may have no carrier power is demodulated by a phase locked loop including a phase detector for deriving an A.C. data output signal having a magnitude and a phase indicative of the phase of the modulated wave. A feedback loop responsive to the data output signal restores power to the carrier frequency component to the loop. In one embodiment, the feedback loop includes a phase modulator responsive to the phase modulated wave and the data output signal. In a second embodiment, carrier frequency power is restored by differentiating the data output signal and supplying the differentiated signal to an input of a voltage controlled oscillator included in the phase locked loop.

Improved PLL For FM Demodulator

Phase-locked loop (PLL) for frequency demodulator contains improved frequency-to-voltage converter producing less ripple than conventional phase detector. In improved PLL, phase detector replaced by state estimator, implemented by ramp/sample-and-hold circuit. Intended to reduce noise in receiver of frequency-modulated (FM) telemetry link without sacrificing bandwidth. Also applicable to processing received FM signals.
