Final Report on the Measurement of the Positive Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment at Fermilab to 127 ppb

This report details the final measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_μ=(g_μ-2)/2$, by the Muon $g-2$ experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL), using positive muons collected from 2021 to 2023. The value of $a_μ$ is determined from the ratio of the anomalous spin precession frequency to the shielded proton precession frequency in the muon storage ring magnetic field, combined with external constants known at the 22 ppb level. The new dataset, containing over $2.5$ times the statistics of our previous results, yields $a_μ=116\,592\,0710(162)\times 10^{-12}$ (139 ppb), or $a_μ=116\,592\,0705(148)\times 10^{-12}$ (127 ppb) when combined with our previous results. The new experimental world average, dominated by the measurements at FNAL, is $a_μ^{\text{Exp}}=116\,592\,0715(145)\times 10^{-12}$ (124 ppb).

Snakes for the Hadron Storage Ring

The Electron Ion Collider calls for collisions of polarized proton and polarized helion beams on polarized electron beams. To preserve polarization of these polarized hadron beams during acceleration, six full helical snakes will be installed. As there are currently 4 snakes in RHIC, the remaining two snakes will be made from existing rotator magnet coils. The existing snakes are made from only right-handed helices where the rotator magnets are made from both right handed and left handed helicity magnets. In order for a sufficient stock of spare coils, one snake will be made of left handed coils. Simulations using Opera field maps in zgoubi show the left handed snake has sufficient range to provide the desired snake precession axes for helions and protons with the existing power supplies. This is an overview of the right and left handed snake assemblies and their effects.

Measurement of the positive muon anomalous magnetic moment to 127 ppb

A new measurement of the magnetic anomaly $a_μ$ of the positive muon is presented based on data taken from 2020 to 2023 by the Muon $g-2$ Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). This dataset contains over 2.5 times the total statistics of our previous results. From the ratio of the precession frequencies for muons and protons in our storage ring magnetic field, together with precisely known ratios of fundamental constants, we determine $a_μ = 116\,592\,0710(162) \times 10^{-12}$ (139 ppb) for the new datasets, and $a_μ = 116\,592\,0705(148) \times 10^{-12}$ (127 ppb) when combined with our previous results. The new experimental world average, dominated by the measurements at FNAL, is $a_μ(\text{exp}) =116\,592\,0715(145) \times 10^{-12}$ (124 ppb). The measurements at FNAL have improved the precision on the world average by over a factor of four.

Electric dipole moments in 5+3 flavor weak effective theory

A fully generic treatment of electric dipole moments (EDMs) is presented in the CP-violating and flavor-conserving weak effective field theory (WET) with five flavors of quarks and three flavors of leptons. We systematically analyze leading contributions to EDMs originating from QCD and QED renormalization group running between the electroweak scale and low energy scales of about 2 GeV. We include the full one-loop anomalous dimension and a subset of two-loop corrections, as well as threshold corrections at the bottom, charm and τ masses. This allows us to derive master formulae in the space of generic WET for the neutron and proton EDMs, for EDMs of diamagnetic atoms, and for the precession frequencies constrained in molecular EDM experiments, from which bounds on the electron EDM are extracted. In particular, our master formulae capture the contributions of WET CP-violating operators with heavy quark and lepton flavors. As an application, we study EDM constraints on the Yukawa couplings of the Higgs boson, in both the linear and non-linear realizations of electroweak symmetry breaking.

A Dedicated Muon EDM Experiment in the `g-2 Storage Ring

Spin precession experiments offer exciting motivations to search for new physics. We propose here an idea of using a modified version of the Muon g-2 storage ring for a potential new scientific program to search for a non-zero muon electric dipole moment (EDM). Using both electric and magnetic dipole fields to produce a "frozen spin" condition for the MDM (all the while enhancing the EDM spin precession), the storage ring would operate at a lower central muon momentum than for the present Muon g-2 measurement. The incident proton beam on target for the muon production can be obtained from the PIP-II high intensity proton beam. Preliminary calculations and simulation results of muon production at 800 MeV PoT, along with the determination of the closed orbit inside the hybrid 'g-2' storage ring configuration, shall be presented. Possibilities of using the 'g-2' storage ring as a test bench to demonstrate the freezing of the MDM spin precession shall be discussed. The operational range of the muon's momentum and energy, and their respective window of electric and magnetic field values to establish the frozen spin condition, shall be presented. We shall also briefly discuss the physics prospects and improvements in muon EDM bounds upon using Fermilab's PIP-II beam.

Rotators for the Hadron Storage Ring

The Electron Ion Collider calls for collisions of polarized electrons on transversely and longitudinally polarized protons and helions. To facilitate longitudinal polar ization, helical dipole rotator magnets from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider will be reused. These rotators are placed asymmetrically at -35.28 and 61.35 mrad from the interaction point. Longitudinal polarization of polarized protons cannot be satisfied for all energies while remaining below the maximum current of 322 A. Care has been taken to ensure longitudinal polarization can be satisfied at the energies of interest. The rotators ramping result in a shift in νs which has been compensated for with a change in the snake precession axes. The rotators can satisfy longitudinal polarization at all energies of interest, and the νs compensation has also been established.

Orientation microscopy–assisted grain boundary analysis for protonic ceramic cell electrolytes

Abstract Grain boundaries in protonic ceramic cell (PCC) electrolytes hinder proton transport, reducing interfacial conductivity. In multicomponent PCC electrolytes, the inclusion of sintering aids further accentuates the complexity of grain boundaries. In this study, we synthesize nanocrystalline BaCe 0.4 Zr 0.4 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ thin films via pulsed laser deposition and analyze their grain boundary character distributions using orientation data collected by precession electron diffraction technique. The results reveal an anisotropic distribution of grain boundary characters, with notably high populations of 180°‐tilt and twist grain boundaries. These findings provide critical insights into identifying the predominant grain boundaries in this PCC electrolyte material, assessing the vast five‐dimensional grain boundary space.
