Field Experience Detecting PV Underperformance in Real Time Using Existing Instrumentation

Maintenance at large-scale photovoltaic plants employs a mix of preventative and corrective maintenance practices. Large outages, such as an inverter tripping offline, are often easy to detect. More subtle sub-inverter faults and failures can accumulate and go unnoticed for months or years. A software-based fault detection method has been developed to analyze commonly measured data from large-scale PV plants for more timely detection of subtle underperformance. The method has been demonstrated on eight datasets from large-scale plants with high accuracy of detection. Results are validated using aerial infrared scanning. String outages are detected with a true positive rate of 73 percent and tracker issues are detected with a true positive rate of 88 percent. The developed method can be uniformly applied to photovoltaic plants across a range of scales and configurations to assess performance, quickly detect underperformance, and determine the source and location of failures. The results inform and improve operations and maintenance at PV plants, ultimately aiding in improved affordability, reliability, availability, and resiliency of solar electricity.

Machine learning for photovoltaic single axis tracker fault detection and classification

More than 81% of the annual capacity of utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) power plants in the U.S. use single-axis trackers (SATs) due to SATs delivering 4% in capacity factor on average over fixed-array systems. However, SATs are subject to faults, such as software misconfigurations and mechanical failures, resulting in suboptimal tracking. If left undetected, the overall power yield of the PV power plant is reduced significantly. Minimizing downtime and ensuring efficient operation of SATs requires robust detection and diagnosis mechanisms for SAT faults. We present a machine learning framework for implementing real-time SAT fault detection and classification. Our implementation of the proposed framework reliably identifies measurements taken from a test PV system undergoing emulated SAT faults relative to state-of-the-art algorithms and produces nearly zero false positives on our testing days. LCOE reduction through proactively optimized monitoring of PV Systems (Final Technical Report)

The project demonstrates the value proposition for a high-resolution monitoring system (HRMS) with diagnostic-prognostic capability and determine its impact on LCOE. The HRMS differs from conventional monitoring systems in a number of ways. First it will include the capability to automatically measure IV curves at the string and module levels. This provides a much richer view into the DC performance of the PV system and allows classification of many typical failure and degradation modes. Second, it will incorporate software capable of quantifying power and energy losses in the field as well as define the location and mechanism of the power and energy loss. Moreover, we aimed to deliver a prognostic system that is capable of predicting certain failures before they occur and giving system operators the opportunity to more efficiently plan operations and maintenance (O&M) activity in order to lower costs and increase yield over the life of the system. The research identifies cost targets required for different monitoring stages, including at the string combiner, at the individual string, and at the module level, to lower the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Finally, a comprehensive guide determines the value PV monitoring brings to PV field operations. The guide assists plant operators in maximizing value from existing plants and identify the trade-offs of different monitoring solutions for future plants depending on the size, location, and expected system lifetime.
