Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW) 2024 Proceedings: Posters

NREL hosts an annual Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW) so that solar technology experts can discuss current and future issues in PV reliability. Longer-lasting PV systems make lower-cost solar electricity and have less impact on the environment, human health, and natural resources. PVRW offers a combination of oral presentations, panel discussions with vigorous audience participation, and poster presentations. This document collects posters that were presented at PVRW 2024.

Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW) 2026 Oral Presentation Proceedings

Each year, the Photovoltaics Reliability Workshop (PVRW) brings together solar technology experts to discuss current and future issues in PV reliability. This document collects oral presentations that were part of PVRW 2026. Click the presentation titles in the following agenda to jump to each file. Not all talks listed in the agenda can be found in this document, as not all presentation files were provided to PVRW for inclusion in these proceedings.

Follow-Up from the Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW): Cost Modeling Capabilities to Evaluate Trends in PV Technologies

NREL's Solar and Storage Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) team reviews live polling results from the Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW) related to module technology trends believed to have the greatest reliability impacts. Then, the team reviews the publicly available tools and inputs necessary for evaluating reliability tradeoffs between initial module and system costs, degradation profiles, and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). These tools include the online Detailed Cost Analysis Models (DCAM) and the DuraMAT LCOE calculator.

Proceedings of the PV Reliability Workshop, February 22-26, 2021

The 2021 Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW) continued in the longstanding PVRW tradition of engaged, passionate presentation and discussion, though in a new virtual format for 2021. The workshop was hosted over 5 days, with each day featuring two oral presentation sessions and one interactive poster session. In these proceedings, you will find links to video recordings for most of the oral presentations and poster presentations along with Q&A sessions and panel discussions. Each presentation is linked from its title in this agenda.

Proceedings of the 2019 PV Reliability Workshop, 26-28 February 2019, Lakewood, Colorado

NREL hosts an annual Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW) so solar technology experts can share information leading to the improvement of PV module reliability. Such improvement reduces the cost of solar electricity and promotes investor confidence in the technology - both critical goals for moving PV technologies deeper into the electricity marketplace. This document collects the presentations and posters from the 2019 PV Reliability Workshop, which was hosted by NREL from Tuesday, February 26, to Thursday, February 28, 2019.

Photovoltaic Cable Connectors: A Comparative Assessment of the Present State of the Industry [Slides]

The consequences of failure for balance of systems (BoS) components (such as PV cable connectors) include offline module string(s); low system voltage; arc, ground, insulation, and over-temperature faults; triggered fuse(s); system shutdown; and fire. The degradation modes for connectors are studied here through an industry survey and its subsequent examination, which are compared to field-degraded specimens. 117 specimens were obtained from a variety of locations and climates or accelerated tests. A failure analysis for connectors from PV installations was developed (and applied to 54 specimens) including nondestructive examinations (photography, a custom resistance-current scan, and X-ray computed tomography) and destructive examinations (featuring milling of the external plastic, extraction of the internal convolute spring, and potting and polishing in cross-section). Surface and through-thickness composition of the metal pins and springs was quantified using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to verify the base polymer materials and compare the chemical structure of the connector body, bushing, end nut, and o-ring. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to further verify the degradation of the same polymeric components. Observations of PV Systems Post-Hurricane

NREL's observations of post-hurricane photovoltaic (PV) systems were shared with PV reliability researchers during the Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop held in Lakewood, Colorado the week of February 26, 2018. NREL hosts an annual Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW) so that solar technology experts can share information leading to the improvement of PV module reliability. Such improvement reduces the cost of solar electricity and promotes investor confidence in the technology - both critical goals for moving PV technologies deeper into the electricity marketplace. This presentation is intended to share real world examples of PV survivability during and after Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.
