Parameter Optimization Toolbox for NS-3 network optimization, NS-3 Parameter Optimization Framework [SWR-18-60]

This simulation-based parameter optimization framework is proposed to tune parameters of different types of communication networks using ns-3 to achieve the optimal network performance. It consists of three main components: an ns-3 packet reporting module; a sampler running simulations with all possible parameter sets for the input parameter variables by using a parallel executor at each generation; and a hybrid optimization algorithm for tuning configurable parameters of hybrid designs and application parameter variables. The proposed hybrid metaheuristic optimization algorithm combines an evolutionary algorithm with a gradient descent function to quickly achieve an approximate globally optimum solution. This software is designed to be used in a multi-core processing Linux environment and run over a long duration of time. The execution time varies depending mainly upon the nature of the ns-3 configuration being simulated. This software includes a custom ns-3 QoS measurement application which must be included with the ns-3 source code during installation of the software.

Gradient process parameter optimization in additive friction stir deposition of aluminum alloys

As one of the most novel additive manufacturing methods, currently selection and optimization of processing parameters in additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) have mainly relied on experiments and subsequent characterization of microstructural and mechanical properties. Such approaches are both time- and resource-consuming. Therefore, an ultrasound elastography enhanced gradient process parameter optimization method was applied in the present work to obtain a window of optimized processing parameters for AFSD processing of aluminum alloy by varying both rotational and linear deposition speeds. Further, the quality of AFSD processed layer was investigated for physical nature of surface, dynamic elastic modulus, and microstructural aspects in cross-sections of the deposited layer. The efficiency in exploring process parameters was significantly enhanced by implementing a high-throughput screening experimental design based on application of gradient process parameters and continuous ultrasound elastographs. In addition, the applied ultrasonic elastography technique assisted in evaluating the homogeneity in microstructure and mechanical properties of AFSD sample over the entire gradients of the process parameters. The techniques adopted in current work can be further extended to identify suitable parameters for AFSD fabrication of components with desired mechanical properties such as hardness, fatigue, etc.

Physics-guided logistic classification for tool life modeling and process parameter optimization in machining

This paper describes a physics-guided logistic classification method for tool life modeling and process parameter optimization in machining. Tool life is modeled using a classification method since the exact tool life cannot be measured in a typical production environment where tool wear can only be directly measured when the tool is replaced. Here, in this study, laboratory tool wear experiments are used to simulate tool wear data normally collected during part production. Two states are defined: tool not worn (class 0) and tool worn (class 1). The non-linear reduction in tool life with cutting speed is modeled by applying a logarithmic transformation to the inputs for the logistic classification model. A method for interpretability of the logistic model coefficients is provided by comparison with the empirical Taylor tool life model. The method is validated using tool wear experiments for milling. Results show that the physics-guided logistic classification method can predict tool life using limited datasets. A method for pre-process optimization of machining parameters using a probabilistic machining cost model is presented. The proposed method offers a robust and practical approach to tool life modeling and process parameter optimization in a production environment.

An algorithm for control system design via parameter optimization

An algorithm for design via parameter optimization has been developed for linear-time-invariant control systems based on the model reference adaptive control concept. A cost functional is defined to evaluate the system response relative to nominal, which involves in general the error between the system and nominal response, its derivatives and the control signals. A program for the practical implementation of this algorithm has been developed, with the computational scheme for the evaluation of the performance index based on Lyapunov's theorem for stability of linear invariant systems.

Digital robust active control law synthesis for large order flexible structure using parameter optimization

A generic procedure for the parameter optimization of a digital control law for a large-order flexible flight vehicle or large space structure modeled as a sampled data system is presented. A linear quadratic Guassian type cost function was minimized, while satisfying a set of constraints on the steady-state rms values of selected design responses, using a constrained optimization technique to meet multiple design requirements. Analytical expressions for the gradients of the cost function and the design constraints on mean square responses with respect to the control law design variables are presented.

A parameter optimization approach to controller partitioning for integrated flight/propulsion control application

A parameter optimization framework is presented to solve the problem of partitioning a centralized controller into a decentralized hierarchical structure suitable for integrated flight/propulsion control implementation. The controller partitioning problem is briefly discussed and a cost function to be minimized is formulated, such that the resulting 'optimal' partitioned subsystem controllers will closely match the performance (including robustness) properties of the closed-loop system with the centralized controller while maintaining the desired controller partitioning structure. The cost function is written in terms of parameters in a state-space representation of the partitioned sub-controllers. Analytical expressions are obtained for the gradient of this cost function with respect to parameters, and an optimization algorithm is developed using modern computer-aided control design and analysis software. The capabilities of the algorithm are demonstrated by application to partitioned integrated flight/propulsion control design for a modern fighter aircraft in the short approach to landing task. The partitioning optimization is shown to lead to reduced-order subcontrollers that match the closed-loop command tracking and decoupling performance achieved by a high-order centralized controller.

Development of a parameter optimization technique for the design of automatic control systems

Parameter optimization techniques for the design of linear automatic control systems that are applicable to both continuous and digital systems are described. The model performance index is used as the optimization criterion because of the physical insight that can be attached to it. The design emphasis is to start with the simplest system configuration that experience indicates would be practical. Design parameters are specified, and a digital computer program is used to select that set of parameter values which minimizes the performance index. The resulting design is examined, and complexity, through the use of more complex information processing or more feedback paths, is added only if performance fails to meet operational specifications. System performance specifications are assumed to be such that the desired step function time response of the system can be inferred.

Robust integrated autopilot/autothrottle design using constrained parameter optimization

A multivariable control design method based on constrained parameter optimization was applied to the design of a multiloop aircraft flight control system. Specifically, the design method is applied to the following: (1) direct synthesis of a multivariable 'inner-loop' feedback control system based on total energy control principles; (2) synthesis of speed/altitude-hold designs as 'outer-loop' feedback/feedforward control systems around the above inner loop; and (3) direct synthesis of a combined 'inner-loop' and 'outer-loop' multivariable control system. The design procedure offers a direct and structured approach for the determination of a set of controller gains that meet design specifications in closed-loop stability, command tracking performance, disturbance rejection, and limits on control activities. The presented approach may be applied to a broader class of multiloop flight control systems. Direct tradeoffs between many real design goals are rendered systematic by this method following careful problem formulation of the design objectives and constraints. Performance characteristics of the optimization design were improved over the current autopilot design on the B737-100 Transport Research Vehicle (TSRV) at the landing approach and cruise flight conditions; particularly in the areas of closed-loop damping, command responses, and control activity in the presence of turbulence.
