Internal performance characteristics of short convergent-divergent exhaust nozzles designed by the method of characteristics

Internal performance data on a short exhaust nozzle designed by the method of characteristics were obtained over a range of pressure ratios from 1.5 to 22. The peak thrust coefficient was not affected by a shortened divergent section, but it occurred at lower pressure ratios due to reduction in expansion ratio. This nozzle contour based on characteristics solution gave higher thrust coefficients than a conical convergent-divergent nozzle of equivalent length. Abrupt-inlet sections permitted a reduction in nozzle length without a thrust-coefficient reduction.

Axial vane-type swirler performance characteristics

The performance of an axial vane-type swirler was investigated to aid in computer modeling of gas turbine combustor flowfields and in evaluation of turbulence models for swirling confined jet flow. The swirler studied is annular with a hub-to-swirler diameter ratio of 0.25 and ten adjustable vanes of pitch-to-chord ratio 0.68. Measurements of time-mean axial, radial, and tangential velocities were made at the swirler exit plane using a five-hole pitot probe technique with computer data reduction. Nondimensionalized velocities from both radial and azimuthal traverses are tabulated and plotted for a range of swirl vane angles phi from 0 to 70 degrees. A study was done of idealized exit-plane velocity profiles relating the swirl numbers S and S' to the ratio of maximum swirl and axial velocities for each idealized case, and comparing the idealized swirl numbers with ones calculated from measured profiles.

Design and performance characteristics of the vertical temperature profile radiometer /VTPR/ for atmospheric temperature soundings

Various design characteristics and performance achievements of the vertical temperature profile radiometer (VTPR) are discussed. It is shown that the VTPR provides a relative calibration accuracy of better than 0.1% rms of the full dynamic range and has been operating successfully in space on the ITOS spacecraft for more than eleven months. The absolute accuracy achievable between in-flight calibrations of 6 minutes, or between 2-hour calibrations using optical temperature correction factors, is better than an rms value of 0.15% of full scale. The radiometric correlation between the VTPR in-flight calibration source and a reference standard blackbody is better than an rms value of 0.5% of full scale.

Some statistical performance characteristics of the 'ITD' modal identification algorithm

Performance characteristics of the Ibrahim time-domain algorithms are examined on a statistical basis. The method uses multiple free-response measurements from a test structure directly in the time domain, and displays varying accuracy, with the strongly excited modes identified most accurately and the weakly excited modes least accurately. Sets of computer-generated free-response functions for a simple 1-mode model are used to study the identification performance for several basic changes in the modal characteristics of the data, the user-selectable analysis constants, and the level of superimposed noise. Results indicate the existence of a direct and often linear effect of noise on the scatter of identified parameters, and good identification is maintained at the 1% noise level down to the point in frequency when only 1/4-cycle of data is analyzed.

Performance characteristics of LOX-H2, tangential-entry, swirl-coaxial, rocket injectors

Development of a high performing swirl-coaxial injector requires an understanding of fundamental performance characteristics. This paper addresses the findings of studies on cold flow atomic characterizations which provided information on the influence of fluid properties and element operating conditions on the produced droplet sprays. These findings are applied to actual rocket conditions. The performance characteristics of swirl-coaxial injection elements under multi-element hot-fire conditions were obtained by analysis of combustion performance data from three separate test series. The injection elements are described and test results are analyzed using multi-variable linear regression. A direct comparison of test results indicated that reduced fuel injection velocity improved injection element performance through improved propellant mixing.

Performance characteristics of proximity focused ultraviolet image converters

Performance characteristics of Bendix type BX 8025-4522 proximity focused image tubes for ultraviolet to visible light conversion are presented. Quantum efficiency, resolution, background, geometric distortion, and environmental test results are discussed. The converters use magnesium fluoride input windows with Cs - Te photocathodes, and P-11 phosphors on fiber optic output windows.

Preliminary MIPCC Enhanced F-4 and F-15 Performance Characteristics for a First Stage Reusable Launch Vehicle

Performance increases in turbojet engines can theoretically be achieved through Mass Injection Pre-Compressor Cooling (MIPCC), a process involving injecting water or oxidizer or both into an afterburning turbojet engine. The injection of water results in pre-compressor cooling, allowing the propulsion system to operate at high altitudes and Mach numbers. In this way, a MIPCC-enhanced turbojet engine could be used to power the first stage of a reusable launch vehicle or be integrated into an existing aircraft that could launch a 100-lbm payload to a reference 100-nm altitude orbit at 28 deg inclination. The two possible candidates for MIPCC flight demonstration that are evaluated in this study are the F-4 Phantom II airplane and the F-15 Eagle airplane (both of McDonnell Douglas, now The Boeing Company, Chicago, Illinois), powered by two General Electric Company (Fairfield, Connecticut) J79 engines and two Pratt & Whitney (East Hartford, Connecticut) F100-PW-100 engines, respectively. This paper presents a conceptual discussion of the theoretical performance of each of these aircraft using MIPCC propulsion techniques. Trajectory studies were completed with the Optimal Trajectories by Implicit Simulation (OTIS) software (NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio) for a standard F-4 airplane and a standard F-15 airplane. Standard aircraft simulation models were constructed, and the thrust in each was altered in accordance with estimated MIPCC performance characteristics. The MIPCC and production aircraft model results were then reviewed to assess the feasibility of a MIPCC-enhanced propulsion system for use as a first-stage reusable launch vehicle; it was determined that the MIPCC-enhanced F-15 model showed a significant performance advantage over the MIPCC-enhanced F-4 model.
