Influence of isoelectronic mass modulation on phonon decay and transport in layered pnictogen-carbon systems

This study systematically investigates the structural, electronic, and thermal transport properties of layered pnictogen–carbon (Pn 2 C 2 ; Pn = P, As, Sb, Bi) monolayers, revealing a profound influence of isoelectronic mass modulation on phonon dynamics and thermal conductivity. Through first-principles calculations and lattice dynamics analysis, we demonstrate that increasing the atomic mass of pnictogens leads to elongated Pn-C bonds, weakened interatomic interactions, and enhanced phonon-phonon scattering, resulting in a dramatic reduction in lattice thermal conductivity (κ). Specifically, κ decreases exponentially from 65.6 W/m-K in P 2 C 2 to an ultralow 0.37 W/m-K in Bi 2 C 2 , driven by suppressed acoustic-optical phonon gaps Δ$^{Γ}_{A-0}$, increased anharmonicity, and reduced phonon lifetimes and group velocities. The transition from semiconducting to metallic behavior in heavier pnictogen-based systems further enhances phonon-electron scattering, contributing to thermal conductivity suppression. Structural analysis highlights the strengthening of out-of-plane C—C bonds and the contraction of C—Pn—C bond angles, which disrupt in-plane phonon transport. Further, these findings establish a design framework for engineering ultralow-κ materials through chemical substitution and structural tuning, offering significant potential for thermoelectric and thermal management applications. This work provides fundamental insights into phonon decay mechanisms and thermal transport in 2D materials, paving the way for advanced phononic and energy-efficient devices.

Pnictogen-Bonding Catalysis: Copolymerization of CO 2 and Epoxides on Antimony(V) Platforms

The copolymerization of CO 2 and epoxides to access polycarbonates represents a promising strategy for CO 2 utilization and for the production of useful polymers. Aiming to explore alternative transition-metal-free approaches that support this chemistry, we have investigated a series of triaryl-catecholatostiboranes as pnictogen-bonding platforms for the copolymerization of CO 2 and cyclohexene oxide (CHO). Our survey of these antimony species has identified motifs that promote this polymerization reaction efficiently, provided that bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride is administered as an activator. By coupling these polymerization studies with a careful assessment of the structure, electronic attributes and Lewis acidity of the catecholatostiboranes, this work shows that high activity is generally observed with the weakest pnictogen-bond donors or Lewis acids investigated. Mechanistic studies, which indicate that the polymerization reaction is first order in stiborane, reveal a nonlinear dependence on the CO 2 pressure. This nonlinear dependence could be satisfactorily modeled based on a pre-equilibrium process involving the reversible insertion of the gaseous monomer into the growing chain. Altogether these findings greatly expand the reach of pnictogen bond catalysis while also providing an entry for the use of heavy group 15 elements as competent platforms for CO 2 utilization.

Synthesis and Computational Analysis of Uranium(III)-Pnictogen Bonds

In this report, we describe the synthesis and characterization of two novel complexes that contain uranium(III)-pnictogen (P: 1-PMes 2 ; As: 1-AsMes 2 ) bonds to elucidate the degrees of covalency among these bonds. To our knowledge, this is the first reported uranium(III)-arsenic complex to be synthesized and characterized. Analysis of the phosphorus and arsenic bonds reveals a similar electronic environment, assessed by UV–vis NIR, that is comparable to other previously reported uranium(III) complexes. A computational analysis of these compounds and their congeners, N, Sb, and Bi, was performed to identify trends in the overall bonding character of the complexes. This analysis shows that bond covalency decreases as the pnictogen becomes heavier and that overall the interaction energy and its components decrease down the group. Here, this study provides an in-depth analysis and understanding of the nature of bonding between hard actinide and soft pnictogen centers.

Pnictogen Bonding at the Core of a Carbene-Stiborane-Gold Complex: Impact on Structure and Reactivity

Our interest in the design of ambiphilic ligands and their coordination to gold has led us to synthesize an indazol-3-ylidene gold chloride complex functionalized at the 4-position of the indazole backbone by a stibine functionality. The antimony center of this new complex cleanly reacts with o-chloranil to afford the corresponding stiborane derivative. Structural analysis indicates that the stiborane coordination environment is best described as a distorted square pyramid whose open face is oriented toward the gold center, allowing for the formation of a long donor–acceptor, or pnictogen, Au → Sb bonding interaction. The presence of this interaction, which has been probed computationally, is also manifested in the enhanced catalytic activity of this complex in the cyclization of N-propargyl-4-fluorobenzamide.

Binding, Release and Functionalization of Intact Pnictogen Tetrahedra Coordinated to Dicopper Complexes

The bridging MeCN ligand in the dicopper(I) complexes [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 -MeCN)][X] 2 (X=weakly coordinating anion, NTf 2 (1 a), FAl[OC 6 F 10 (C 6 F 5 )] 3 (1 b), Al[OC(CF 3 ) 3 ] 4 (1 c)) was replaced by white phosphorus (P 4 ) or yellow arsenic (As 4 ) to yield [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 2 : η 2 -E 4 )][X] 2 (E=P (2 a-c), As (3 a-c)). The molecular structures in the solid state reveal novel coordination modes for E 4 tetrahedra bonded to coinage metal ions. Experimental data and quantum chemical computations provide information concerning perturbations to the bonding in coordinated E 4 tetrahedra. Reactions with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) led to replacement of the E 4 tetrahedra with release of P 4 or As 4 and formation of [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 - Me NHC)][X] 2 (4 a,b) or to an opening of one E-E bond leading to an unusual E 4 butterfly structural motif in [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 -E 4 Dipp NHC)][X] 2 (E=P (5 a,b), E=As (6)). With a cyclic alkyl amino carbene ( Et CAAC), cleavage of two As-As bonds was observed to give two isomers of [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 2 : η 2 -As 4 Et CAAC)][X] 2 (7 a,b) with an unusual As 4 -triangle+1 unit.

Expanding the Scope of Pnictogen‐Assisted Cyclophane Self‐Assembly

Cyclophanes are a fundamentally interesting class of compounds that host a wide range of unique and emergent properties. Furthermore, synthesis of complex and/or functionalized cyclophanes can often suffer from harsh reaction conditions, long reaction times, and sometimes low yields using stepwise methods. We have previously reported an efficient, high-yielding, metalloid-directed self-assembly method to prepare disulfide, thioether, and hydrocarbon cyclophanes and cages that feature mercaptomethyl-arenes as starting materials. Herein, we report the synthesis of 21 new disulfide and thioether assemblies that expand this high yielding self-assembly method to a wide breadth of macrocycles and cages with diverse structures. Remarkably, the high-yielding, efficient syntheses still proceed under dynamic covalent control using electron-deficient, heteroaryl, cycloalkyl, spiro, and even short alkenyl/alkynyl substrates.

Prediction of BiS2-type pnictogen dichalcogenide monolayers for optoelectronics

Abstract In this work, we introduce a 2D materials family with chemical formula MX 2 (M={As, Sb, Bi} and X={S, Se, Te}) having a rectangular 2D lattice. This materials family has been predicted by systematic ab-initio structure search calculations in two dimensions. Using density-functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, we study the structural, vibrational, electronic, optical, and excitonic properties of the predicted MX 2 family. Our calculations reveal that the predicted SbX 2 and BiX 2 monolayers are stable while the AsX 2 layers exhibit an in-plane ferroelectric instability. All materials display strong excitonic effects and good optical absorption within the infrared-to-visible range. Hence, these monolayers can harvest solar energy and serve in optoelectronics applications. Furthermore, our results indicate that exfoliation of the predicted MX 2 monolayers from their bulk counterparts is experimentally viable.

Transient gap generation in BaFe2As2 driven by coherent lattice vibrations

Abstract Iron-based superconductors provide a rich platform to investigate the interplay between unconventional superconductivity, nematicity, and magnetism. The electronic structure and the magnetic properties of iron-based superconductors are highly sensitive to the pnictogen height. Coherent excitation of the A1g phonon by femtosecond laser directly modulates the pnictogen height, which has been used to control the physical properties of iron-based superconductors. Previous studies show that the driven A1g phonon resulted in a transient increase of the pnictogen height in BaFe2As2, favoring an enhanced Fe magnetic moment. However, there are no direct observations on either the enhanced Fe magnetic moments or the enhanced spin-density wave (SDW) gap. Here, we use time-resolved broadband terahertz spectroscopy to investigate the dynamics of BaFe2As2 in the A1g phonon-driven state. Below the SDW transition temperature, we observe a transient gap generation at early-time delays. A similar transient feature is observed in the normal state up to room temperature.

Magnetic Properties Tuning via Broad Range Site Deficiency in Square Net Material UCu x Bi 2

HfCuSi 2 -type pnictogen compounds have recently been shown to be a versatile platform for designing materials with topologically nontrivial band structures. However, these phases require strict control over the electron count to tune the Fermi level, which can only be achieved in compositions with A 2+ M 2+ Pn 2 and A 3+ M + Pn 2 (A = lanthanides, M = transition metals, Pn = pnictogens P–Bi) charge distribution. While such lanthanide compounds have been thoroughly studied as candidate magnetic topological materials, their heavy element analogs with uranium and bismuth remain largely underexplored. In this report, we present the synthesis of UCu x Bi 2 single crystals and study their magnetic properties. Detailed structural analysis revealed that flux-grown crystals always form as a site-deficient UCu x Bi 2 composition, where x varies between 0.20 and 0.64. Magnetic property measurements revealed a dependence of the magnetic coupling on the Cu site deficiency, linearly changing the Néel temperature from 51 K for UCu 0.60 Bi 2 to 118 K for UCu 0.30 Bi 2 . Moreover, higher Cu concentration promotes a metamagnetic transition in highly magnetically anisotropic UCu 0.60 Bi 2 single crystals. We show that DFT calculations can successfully model site deficiency in the UCu x Sb 2 and UCu x Bi 2 systems. This work paves the way toward using the site deficiency to tune the Fermi level in more ubiquitous A 3+ M 2+ x Pn 2 phases, which previously have not been considered topological candidate materials due to unfavorable electron count.

ASb 3 Mn 9 O 19 (A = K or Rb): New Mn-Based 2D Magnetoplumbites with Geometric and Magnetic Frustration

Magnetoplumbites are one of the most broadly studied families of hexagonal ferrites, typically with high magnetic ordering temperatures, making them excellent candidates for permanent magnets. However, magnetic frustration is rarely observed in magnetoplumbites. Herein, the discovery, synthesis, and characterization of the first Mn-based magnetoplumbite, as well as the first magnetoplumbite involving pnictogens (Sb), ASb 3 Mn 9 O 19 (A = K or Rb) are reported. The Mn 3+ ( S = 2) cations, further confirmed by DC magnetic susceptibility and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, construct three geometrically frustrated sublattices, including Kagome, triangular, and puckered honeycomb lattices. Magnetic properties measurements revealed strong antiferromagnetic spin–spin coupling as well as multiple low-temperature magnetic features. Heat capacity data does not show any prominent λ-anomaly, suggesting minimal associated magnetic entropy. Moreover, neutron powder diffraction (NPD) implied the absence of long-range magnetic ordering in KSb 3 Mn 9 O 19 down to 3 K. However, several magnetic peaks are observed in RbSb 3 Mn 9 O 19 at 3 K, corresponding to an incommensurate magnetic structure. Interestingly, strong diffuse scattering is seen in the NPD patterns of both compounds at low angles and is analyzed by reverse Monte Carlo refinements, indicating short-range spin ordering related to frustrated magnetism as well as 2D magnetic correlations in ASb 3 Mn 9 O 19 (A = K or Rb).

New Noncentrosymmetric Tetrel Pnictides Composed of Square‐Planar Gold(I) with Peculiar Bonding

Abstract Three novel isostructural equiatomic gold tetrel pnictides, AuSiAs, AuGeP, and AuGeAs, were synthesized and characterized. These phases crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) monoclinic space group Cc (no. 9), featuring square‐planar Au within cis ‐[AuTt 2 Pn 2 ] units (Tt=tetrel, Si, Ge; Pn=pnictogen, P, As). This is in drastic contrast to the structure of previously reported AuSiP, which exhibits typical linear coordination of Au with Si and P. Chemical bonding analysis through the electron localization function suggests covalent two‐center two‐electron Tt−Pn bonds, and three‐center Au−Tt−Au and Au−Pn−Au bonds with 1.6 e − per bond. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies support the covalent and nonionic nature of Au−Pn and Au−Tt bonds. The title materials were found to be n ‐type narrow‐gap semiconductors or semimetals, with nearly temperature‐independent electrical resistivities and low thermal conductivities. A combination of the semimetallic properties with tunable NCS structure provides opportunities for the development of materials based on gold tetrel pnictides.

On the Effects of Aliovalent Substitutions in Thermoelectric Zintl Pnictides. Varied Polyanionic Dimensionality and Complex Structural Transformations–The Case of Sr 3 ZnP 3 vs Sr 3 Al x Zn 1– x P 3

The structures and the transport properties of a novel family of Zintl phosphides and arsenides with the formula AE 3 ZnPn 3 and the solid solutions AE 3 Al x Zn 1–x Pn 3 , AE 3 ZnAs y P 1–y (AE = Sr, Eu; Pn = P, As) are reported. Crystals of nine new phases have been obtained via Pb-flux reactions and used for structural work by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The derived orthorhombic structure is without a direct analog, and features unusual structural units, where the Zn atoms are in both distorted tetrahedral and trigonal-planar coordination of pnictogens. Electronic structure calculations reveal moderately wide bandgaps for Sr 3 ZnP 3 and Sr 3 ZnAs 3 , on the order of 0.70 and 0.63 eV, respectively. Electrical transport measurements above room temperature indicate relatively high resistivity values above 500 K (ρ ≈ 4.8 Ω cm and above), but some of the samples exhibit very high Seebeck coefficients, as large as 300 μV/K at 560 K for Sr 3 ZnAs 3 . Aliovalent substitutions in AE 3 ZnPn 3 , achieved by the partial replacement of Zn 2+ with Al 3+ cations promote occupational and positional disorder, which causes structural transformation towards the disordered variant of the Sr 5 Al 2 Sb 6 structure type. Such substitutions also change the dimensionality of the polyanionic sub-lattice in the resulting quaternary AE 3 Al x Zn 1–x Pn 3 phases. Furthermore, preliminary transport property data on the latter reveal nine times lower electrical resistivity (ρ 500 ≈ 0.5 Ω cm) together with a significantly enhanced Seebeck coefficient, αmax ≈ 430 μV/K at 560 K.

Solution-Grown Ternary Semiconductors: Nanostructuring and Stereoelectronic Lone Pair Distortions in I–V–VI 2 Materials

Alkali pnictogen dichalcogenides–I–V–VI 2 or APnCh 2 –have been identified as promising semiconducting materials for energy conversion devices. However, the controlled nanoscale synthesis and our understanding of the effects of cation ordering and stereochemically active lone pairs on the structures of these ternary compounds remain underdeveloped. Here, we use solution-phase chemistry to synthesize a family of APnCh 2 materials, including LiSbSe 2 , NaSbS 2 , NaSbSe 2 , NaBiS 2 , and NaBiSe 2 . Our approach utilizes alkali metal hydrides (AH) or carboxylates, A(O 2 CR), PnPh 3 , and elemental chalcogens as synthetic precursors and oleylamine or 1-octadecene as solvents. Synthetic manipulation via fine-tuning of reaction temperature enables control over the degree of ordering caused by the Sb 5s 2 lone pair-induced distortions in NaSbS 2 . Pair distribution function analysis demonstrates that the structure of the Sb-containing phases deviates much more from a disordered rock salt structure than that of the Bi-containing phases. This local distortion, induced by the Sb lone pair, leads to a previously unreported noncentrosymmetric NaSbS 2 crystal structure, which is additionally supported by second-harmonic generation measurements. Infrared and multinuclear solid-state NMR spectroscopies show that oleylamine or chelating carboxylates and, in some cases, unreacted precursors (LiH and PnPh 3 ) remain bound to the nanocrystalline surfaces. Further, a deeper understanding of the local atomic environment, long-range ordering, surface chemistry, and optoelectronic properties of these materials may speed up their fundamental study and application.
