Split representation of adaptively compressed polarizability operator

The polarizability operator plays a central role in density functional perturbation theory and other perturbative treatment of first principle electronic structure theories. The cost of computing the polarizability operator generally scales as O(Ne4) where Ne is the number of electrons in the system. The recently developed adaptively compressed polarizability operator (ACP) formulation [L. Lin, Z. Xu and L. Ying, Multiscale Model. Simul. 2017] reduces such complexity to O(Ne 3 ) in the context of phonon calculations with a large basis set for the first time, and demonstrates its effectiveness for model problems. In this paper, we improve the performance of the ACP formulation by splitting the polarizability into a near singular component that is statically compressed, and a smooth component that is adaptively compressed. The new split representation maintains the O(Ne 3 ) complexity, and accelerates nearly all components of the ACP formulation, including Chebyshev interpolation of energy levels, iterative solution of Sternheimer equations, and convergence of the Dyson equations. For simulation of real materials, we discuss how to incorporate nonlocal pseudopotentials and finite temperature effects. In this work, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using one-dimensional model problem in insulating and metallic regimes, as well as its accuracy for real molecules and solids.

Enhanced active-sterile neutrino polarizability at the intensity frontier

Electromagnetic probes of neutrinos can provide insights into physics beyond the Standard Model. Among the possible electromagnetic interactions of neutrinos is neutrino polarizability, a dimension-7 effective operator that couples two neutrinos to two photons. In this manuscript, we study a realization of the neutrino polarizability operator in which one of the active neutrinos is replaced by a sterile neutrino. We derive new constraints on this active-sterile neutrino polarizability from its contribution to neutrino-nucleus scattering with a single photon in the final state at neutrino experiments. We show that a realization of this operator via a light mediator can explain the MiniBooNE low-energy excess while remaining consistent with other experimental constraints. Finally, we comment on additional model realizations of this higher-dimensional operator.

Direct detection of dark baryons naturally suppressed by ℋ-parity

We identify symmetries in a broad class of vectorlike confining dark sectors that forbid the leading electromagnetic moments that would ordinarily mediate dark baryon scattering with the Standard Model. The absence of these operators implies dark baryon dark matter has much smaller cross sections for elastic scattering off nuclei, leading to suppressed direct detection signals. In the confined description, we identify an “ℋ-parity” symmetry that exists in any dark sector with dark quarks transforming under a vectorlike representation of a new confining SU(𝑁 𝑐 ) gauge theory as well as a vectorlike representation of the electroweak group SU⁡(2) 𝐿 . The parity is independent of 𝑁 𝑐 and 𝑁 𝑓 , though it is essential that the dark quarks are neutral under hypercharge. This parity forbids dark hadron electric and magnetic dipole moments, charge radius, and anapole moment, while permitting dimension-7 operators that include polarizability, electroweak loop-induced interactions, and lower-dimensional electromagnetic transition moments between different neutral dark baryon states. We work out an explicit example, 𝑁 𝑐 = 𝑁 𝑓 = 3, that is the most minimal theory with fermionic dark baryons. In this specific model, we use the nonrelativistic quark model to show the magnetic dipole moment and charge radius vanish, while the transition moments are nonzero, consistent with ℋ-parity. We discuss the implications of a suppressed direct detection signal, emphasizing that this broad class of models provide a well-motivated target for future colliders.

Monophotons at neutrino experiments from neutrino polarizability

Nontrivial electromagnetic properties of neutrinos are an avenue to physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). To this end, we investigate the power of monophoton signals at neutrino experiments to probe a higher-dimensional operator connecting neutrinos to SM photons dubbed, neutrino polarizability. A simplified scenario giving rise to this operator involves a new pseudoscalar that couples to both neutrinos and photons, with clear implications for axionlike particle (ALP) and Majoron physics. By analyzing the photon energy spectrum and angular distributions, we find that NOMAD and MiniBooNE currently set the most stringent limits, while short baseline near detector and the DUNE near detector will soon provide significantly improved constraints.

Schiff Moment of 129 Xe and 199 Hg [Slides]

Using Chicoma in 2025, we advanced DFT-based calculations needed to connect fundamental T violating interactions to measurable Schiff moments in heavy nuclei. We implemented DFT for polarized odd nuclear systems, a first step toward treating the time-reversal-breaking mean fields required for Schiff moment calculations. As a validation test, we computed polarizabilities using a perturbation with the dipole operator (see figure to the right) for the odd systems shown in Table 1; while no odd-system effect is expected for polarizabilities, this capability is essential for Schiff moments. Initial mean-field solutions for 129 Xe Schiff moment calculations were also generated.

Empirical Observations on the Sensitivity of Hot Cathode Ionization Type Vacuum Gages

A study of empirical methods of predicting tile relative sensitivities of hot cathode ionization gages is presented. Using previously published gage sensitivities, several rules for predicting relative sensitivity are tested. The relative sensitivity to different gases is shown to be invariant with gage type, in the linear range of gage operation. The total ionization cross section, molecular and molar polarizability, and refractive index are demonstrated to be useful parameters for predicting relative gage sensitivity. Using data from the literature, the probable error of predictions of relative gage sensitivity based on these molecular properties is found to be about 10 percent. A comprehensive table of predicted relative sensitivities, based on empirical methods, is presented.

Multilayer Electroactive Polymer Composite Material Comprising Carbon Nanotubes

An electroactive material comprises multiple layers of electroactive composite with each layer having unique dielectric, electrical and mechanical properties that define an electromechanical operation thereof when affected by an external stimulus. For example, each layer can be (i) a 2-phase composite made from a polymer with polarizable moieties and an effective amount of carbon nanotubes incorporated in the polymer for a predetermined electromechanical operation, or (ii) a 3-phase composite having the elements of the 2-phase composite and further including a third component of micro-sized to nano-sized particles of an electroactive ceramic incorporated in the polymer matrix.

Polarizabilities and Other Properties of the td Muons Molecular Ion

Wavefunctions of Hylleraas type were used earlier to calculate energy levels of muonic systems. Recently, we found in the case of the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+ that it was necessary to include high powers of the internuclear distance in the Hylleraas functions to localize the nuclear motion when treating the ions as three-body systems without invoking the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We try the same approach in a muonic system, td(mu-). Improved convergence is obtained for J = 0 and 1 states for shorter expansions when we use this type of generalized Hylleraas function, but as the expansion length increases the high powers are no longer useful. We obtain good energy values for the two lowest J = 0 and J = 1 states and compare them with the best earlier calculations. Expectation values are obtained for various operators, the Fermi contact parameters, and the permanent quadrupole moment. The cusp conditions are also calculated. The polarizability of the ground state is then calculated using second-order perturbation theory with intermediate J = 1 pseudostates. It should be possible to measure the polarizability by observing Rydberg states of atoms with td(mu-) acting as the nucleus.

Enhanced neutrino polarizability

We point out that neutrinos can have enhanced couplings to photons, if light (pseudo)scalar mediators are present, resulting in a potentially measurable neutrino polarizability. We show that the expected suppression from small neutrino masses can be compensated by the light mediator mass, generating dimension 7 Rayleigh operators at low scales. We explore the rich phenomenology of such models, computing in detail the constraints on the viable parameter space, spanned by the couplings of the mediator to neutrinos and photons. Finally, we build several explicit models that lead to an enhanced neutrino polarizability by modifying the inverse see-saw majoron, i.e., the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of the U(1) L global lepton number responsible for generating small neutrino masses.

Static Properties and Stark Effect of the Ground State of the HD Molecular Ion

We have calculated static properties of the ground state of the HD(+) ion and its lowest-lying P-state without making use of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, as was done in the case of H2(+) and D2(+) [Phys. Rev. A 58, 2787 (1998)]. The ion is treated as a three-body system whose ground state is spherically symmetric. The wavefunction is of generalized Hylleraas type, but it is necessary to include high powers of the internuclear distance to localize the nuclear motion. We obtain good values of the energies of the ground S-state and lowest P-state and compare them with earlier calculations. Expectation values are obtained for various operators, the Fermi contact parameters, and the permanent quadrupole moment. The cusp conditions are also calculated. The polarizability was then calculated using second-order perturbation theory with intermediate P pseudostates. Since the nuclei in HD(+) are not of equal mass there is dipole coupling between the lowest two rotational states, which are almost degenerate. This situation is carefully analyzed, and the Stark shift is calculated variationally as a function of the applied electric field.

Sensing/actuating materials made from carbon nanotube polymer composites and methods for making same

An electroactive sensing or actuating material comprises a composite made from a polymer with polarizable moieties and an effective amount of carbon nanotubes incorporated in the polymer for a predetermined electromechanical operation of the composite when such composite is affected by an external stimulus. In another embodiment, the composite comprises a third component of micro-sized to nano-sized particles of an electroactive ceramic that is also incorporated in the polymer matrix. The method for making the three-phase composite comprises either incorporating the carbon nanotubes in the polymer matrix before incorporation of the particles of ceramic or mixing the carbon nanotubes and particles of ceramic together in a solution before incorporation in the polymer matrix.

Ab initio coupled-cluster calculations of ground and dipole excited states in He 8

We perform coupled-cluster calculations of ground- and dipole excited-state properties of the 8 He halo nucleus with nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory, both with and without explicit delta degrees of freedom. By increasing the precision in our coupled-cluster calculations via the inclusion of leading-order three-particle three-hole excitations in the cluster operator, we obtain a ground-state energy and a charge radius that are consistent with experiment, albeit with a slight underbinding. We also investigate the excited states induced by the electric dipole operator and present a discussion on the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn and cluster sum rules. Lastly, we compute the electric dipole polarizability, providing a theoretical benchmark for future experimental determinations that will study this exotic nucleus.

Magnetic brightening and nanoscale imaging of spin-polarized helical edge modes in ZrTe 5

Efficient charge transport remains a fundamental challenge for nanoelectronic devices, as their performance is constrained by high dissipation and the impedance mismatch between high-frequency signal sources and nanoscale circuit interfaces. Although topologically protected helical edge modes offer a dissipationless and backscattering-resilient alternative, achieving nanoscale control over these modes requires direct visualization of their spatial electrodynamics, especially under high-frequency operation. Here, by utilizing cryogenic magneto-infrared scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (cm-IR-sSNOM), we image spin-polarized helical edge channels in ZrTe 5 at the nanoscale, revealing magnetic-field-induced brightening as a high-frequency electrodynamic signature of robust topological edge modes. Operating at 1.8 K and under a magnetic field of up to 5 T, we observe the emergence of edge-state polarizability at infrared frequencies that is notably resilient to the magnetic gaps that typically quench d.c. and microwave edge transport. Our results reveal a topological ‘two-lane’ spatial reorganization in which an external magnetic field induces a spin-population imbalance between counterpropagating edge modes. Favoured helical branches are confined against physical boundaries to activate a net infrared near-field contrast. This electrodynamic response scales linearly with the number of atomic layers, which confirms that individual layers in ZrTe 5 preserve their discrete quantum spin Hall identities. These findings may be useful for developing topological spintronic devices, as the magnetic infrared tunability of helical edge channels provides a pathway for low-loss nanoscale interconnects and high-speed information processing.

Separation of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with DEP-FFF

A process using a modified dielectrophoresis device separates single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) according to their polarizability in electric fields. This depends on the size and dielectric constant of individual nanotubes and easily separates metallic from semiconducting nanotubes. Separation by length has also been demonstrated. Partial separation (enrichment) according to bandgap (which is linked to polarizability) has also been shown and can be improved to full separation of individual types of semiconducting SWNTs with better control over operational parameters and the length of SWNT starting material. This process and device can be scaled affordably to generate useful amounts of semiconducting SWNTs for electronic device development and production. In this study, a flow injection dielectrophoresis technique was used with a modified dielectrophoresis device. The length, width, and height of the modified chamber were 28, 2.5, and 0.025 cm, respectively. On the bottom of the chamber, there are two arrays of 50-m-wide, 2-m-thick gold electrodes, which are connected to an AC voltage generator and are alternately arranged so that every electrode is adjacent to two electrodes of the opposite polar. There is an additional plate electrode on the top of the chamber that is negatively biased. During the experiment, a syringe pump constantly pumps in the mobile phase, 1-percent sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) solution, into the chamber. The frequency and voltage are set to 1 MHz and 10 V peak-to-peak, respectively. About 150 micro-L of SWNTs in 1- percent SDBS decanted solution are injected to the mobile phase through a septum near the entrance of the chamber. The flow rate of the mobile phase is set to 0.02 cu cm/min. The injected SWNTs sample flows through the chamber before it is lead into a fluorescence flow-through cell and collected for further analysis. The flow-through cell has three windows, thus allowing the fluorometer to collect fluorescence spectrum and visible absorption spectrums simultaneously. Dielectrophoresis field-flow fractionation (DEP-FFF) generally depends on interaction of a sedimentation force and DEP force for particle separation, and SWNTs are neutrally buoyant in water. In this innovation, the third electrode was added to create a sedimentation force based on DC electrophoresis. This makes this particular device applicable to separations on any neutrally buoyant particles in solution and a more general process for a broad range of nanomaterials sorting and separations.

Model potential calculations of lithium transitions.

Semi-empirical potentials are constructed that have eigenvalues close in magnitude to the binding energies of the valence electron in lithium. The potentials include the long range polarization force between the electron and the core. The corresponding eigenfunctions are used to calculate dynamic polarizabilities, discrete oscillator strengths, photoionization cross sections and radiative recombination coefficients. A consistent application of the theory imposes a modification on the transition operator, but its effects are small for lithium. The method presented can be regarded as a numerical generalization of the widely used Coulomb approximation.

Tunable n- and p-Type Behavior of Ruddlesden–Popper and Dion–Jacobson 2D Perovskites

Interfacial band alignment in two-dimensional (2D)/three-dimensional (3D) perovskite heterostructures is important for maximizing separation, extraction, and collection of charge carriers, which, in turn, stabilize the perovskite layer during solar cell operation. Despite the wide use of 2D spacer cations for stabilizing perovskite solar cells, spacer cation exchange across the 2D/3D interface induces structural transformation and degradation in performance and stability. We have now examined the electrochemical and photoelectrochemical behavior of 2D Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) and Dion–Jacobson (DJ) perovskites to assess the impact of binding configuration on the interfacial charge separation and their operational stability. In-situ open circuit potential (OCP) responses of 2D perovskites under light illumination, paired with redox couples (ferrocene/ferrocenium), reveal different semiconducting polarizabilities of BA-RP (n-type) and BDA-DJ (p-type). The tunability of the Fermi energy level in 2D perovskites discussed in this study offers insight into the design of 2D/3D interfaces for optimizing charge transfer and enhancing charge neutrality and stability.
