Precoder Design for Physical-Layer Security and Authentication in Massive MIMO UAV Communications

Supporting reliable and seamless wireless connectivity for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has recently become a critical requirement to enable various different use cases of UAVs. Due to their widespread deployment footprint, cellular networks can support beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) communications for UAVs. In this paper, we consider cellular connected UAVs (C-UAVs) that are served by massive multiple input-multiple-output (MIMO) links to extend coverage range, while also improving physical layer security and authentication. Here, we consider Rician channel and propose a novel linear precoder design for transmitting data and artificial noise (AN). We derive the closed-form expression of the ergodic secrecy rate of CUAVs for both conventional and proposed precoder designs. In addition, we obtain the optimal power splitting factor that divides the power between data and AN by asymptotic analysis. Then, we apply the proposed precoder design in the fingerprint embedding authentication framework, where the goal is to minimize the probability of detection of the authentication tag at an eavesdropper. In simulation results, we show the superiority of the proposed precoder in both secrecy rate and the authentication probability considering moderate and large number of antenna massive MIMO scenarios.

Efficient Precoding for Single Carrier Modulation in Multi-User Massive MIMO Networks

Abstract—Frequency domain (FD) multi-user detection (MUD) and precoding has been shown to be an effective means of approaching the theoretical per-user capacity for single carrier modulation (SCM) schemes in massive MIMO scenarios with highly dispersive channels. When a cyclic prefix is added to the SCM waveform, the circulant structures of the resulting convolutional channel matrix allows for relatively simple expressions for the FD detection and precoding. In this paper, we further refine the computationally efficient minimum mean squared error (MMSE) FD-MUD technique in a time-division duplexing (TDD) massive MIMO setup by pre-computing the scale factor needed to produce an unbiased estimate. The resulting scale factor and the matrix inverse that was calculated for the uplink is then reused for the downlink to form a computationally efficient precoding scheme with superior performance compared to zero-forcing (ZF) precoding. Performance analysis is provided and confirmed through simulation results.

Multi-User Capacity for Cyclic Prefix Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum with Linear Detection and Precoding

Cyclic Prefix Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (CP-DSSS) is a promising solution for futuristic 6G ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) and massive machine type communication (mMTC) applications, where the CP-DSSS waveform would operate as a secondary network at the same frequencies as the primary network but at much lower SNR. In this paper, we show per-user capacity for multi-user scenarios, where simple matched filtering (MF) is performed on the uplink (UL) and time-reversal (TR) precoding is used on the downlink (DL). When operating in the low SNR regime, CP-DSSS achieves per-user capacity near the optimum single-user capacity by using a MF detector at the receiver for the UL. TR precoding converges to the optimal capacity as the number of antennas at the hub/gateway increases. Given the near-optimal performance of MF detection and TR precoding for each of the users, CP-DSSS can be implemented with simple device transceiver structures, reducing per-unit cost for massively deployed 6G networks.

Frequency Domain Detection and Precoding for Massive MIMO With Single Carrier Modulation

Single carrier modulation (SCM) schemes are attractive for uplink (UL) transmissions due to improved power efficiency at the user equipment (UE) transmitter compared with multi-carrier modulation schemes. In a massive MIMO scenario with SCM, the UL detection must mitigate the effects of inter-symbol interference and multiuser interference. This processing is effectively performed in the frequency domain (FD) using a minimum mean squared error (MMSE) detector when the transmission is framed with a cyclic prefix. This paper presents a MMSEbased detector that is compatible with distributed processing in a time-division duplex (TDD) system. The matrix inverses computed for the UL detection are then reused to perform multi-user precoding for the downlink (DL). We find that this scheme yields a tremendous savings in computational complexity compared to commonly used zero-forcing (ZF) precoding without sacrificing any performance. Since MMSE processing introduces a bias to the estimates, we then derive the scalar coefficients necessary to cancel the MMSE bias. The impact of channel estimation errors are analyzed for both the UL and DL cases in conjunction with a power-efficient approach to SCM channel estimation. Moreover, extensive simulations are performed to confirm our theoretical findings.

Advances in Secure 5G Network for a Nationwide Drone Corridor

Recent research has validated the proposal to add a separate set of antennas for 5G coverage in the air, while the conventional set of antennas continues to provide coverage on the ground, for a nationwide drone corridor for 5G cellular drones. More importantly, this drone corridor can be made secure and reliable by adapting the drone trajectories to avoid interference and security attacks, and with advanced precoding and physical layer security. Energy efficiency can also be improved with low-resolution massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems that utilize low resolution digital to analog converters. This paper describes additional research findings to further support the creation of this nationwide drone corridor. We design optimal drone trajectory within the drone corridor to improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles on the ground. We derive the optimum antenna uptilt angle to minimize outage probability for a given drone corridor. We also study the placement of intelligent reflector surfaces in an urban drone corridor in order to improve the multi-path scattering and hence the spatial multiplexing gains for serving drones. We calculate trajectories to maximize data rate in the presence of smart interference when drones are used as relays and each drone may be deployed in the paths of data flows from multiple BSs to multiple UEs. Next we demonstrate how the use of the additional set of antennas along with the 3GPP standard based subframe blanking method can minimize the interference from ground reflection of the radio frequency (RF) radiation from the downtilted antennas. The paper concludes with plans to continue with experimental studies to advance this work further.

Physical Layer Security at a Point-to-Point MIMO System With 1-Bit DACs and ADCs

Low-resolution converters reduce the power consumption of wireless devices and help enable large energy-efficient arrays. In this letter, we evaluate the secrecy rate for the extreme case of 1-bit single-user multiple-input multiple-output systems following two signaling approaches. In the first method, the system uses discrete signaling. In the second, the system combines Gaussian signaling with artificial noise alongside power allocation. In the first case, we give a closed-form expression of the secrecy rate and propose an algorithm that provides near-optimal results for low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Further, in the second scenario, depending on the channel state information, we suggest different precoding plans and derive a secrecy rate lower bound. At low SNR, power is allocated to the main signal. Only at high SNR is optimal power allocation effective. Moreover, knowing the eavesdropper channel greatly improves the system’s secrecy.

Frequency Domain Multi-user Processing for Single Carrier Modulation with Cyclic Prefix

Frequency domain (FD) detection and precoding have been shown to be effective means of approaching the theoretical per-user capacity for single carrier modulation SCM) schemes. When a cyclic prefix is added to the SCM waveform, the circulant structures of the resulting convolutional channel matrix allows for relatively simple expressions for the FD processing, and achieves performance near the theoretical capacity even for high signal to noise ratio values. This paper details the signal processing for uplink and downlink multi-user operation with a multi-antenna base station.

Single Carrier Modulation Resource Allocation for Massive MIMO with Virtual Antennas

Today’s Massive MIMO cellular operation is dominated by orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. One of the advantages of OFDM is the flexibility to carve up the available spectrum into resource blocks (RBs) that can operate adjacent to one another. Massive MIMO adds spatial multiplexing layers on top of the RBs, enabling the simultaneous operation of dozens of UEs. Cyclic prefixed single carrier modulation (CP-SCM) is an alternative to OFDM that also benefits from massive MIMO and is useful as an OFDM alternative in specific scenarios. However, until recently, no resource allocation method has been proposed for CP-SCM. In this paper, we present a CP-SCM resource allocation scheme using virtual antennas in a massive MIMO time domain duplexed scenario. By creating several virtual antennas for each physical antenna, the benefits of massive MIMO are achieved with a smaller physical antenna count. Resources are quantized into data streams, and each user can be assigned a variable number of simultaneous streams. This paper presents a detailed development and analysis of multi-stream processing (MSP) for both uplink detection and downlink precoding. We also introduce heterogeneous MSP, where CP-SCM and OFDM signals can be processed in the same MSP framework.
