Implications of the GSFC Q3 model for trapped particle motion

The Uranus magnetic field model of Connerney et al. (1987), designated GSFC Q3, is used to compute field geometric invariant parameters that determine the adiabatic motion of energetic charged particles trapped in the Uranian magnetosphere, performing computations only for points located along the Voyager 2 flyby trajectory. The L-shell values computed along the Voyager-2 trajectory were compared with L shell values corresponding to the orbital positions for the Uranian satellites Ariel, Umbriel, Miranda, and Titania for a time period centered on the time of the Voyager 2 closest approach to the planet. Bimodal distributions of L minima asociated with the orbital motion of the moons are obtained, thus complicating the model predictions and correlations with charged particle data. The location of charged particle absorption signatures associated with the sweeping effects of the Uranian satellites is reasonably predicted, but significant discrepancies remain which cannot be explained by Q3 model uncertainties.

Q3 Report for FY25 Theory and Simulation Performance Target: Development of an integrated modeling framework for fusion reactor design and assessment

This report describes the work and activities carried out towards the completion of each of the following milestones in FY25 Q3: 1. Demonstrate workflow for generating self-consistent CESOL plasma profiles + first wall and divertor loading prediction and generate the CAT plasma and neutron loading needed for further engineering analysis. • Benchmark between two first wall heat flux mapping methods, identify importance of various heat flux sources and physics impact of using fully coupled CESOL vs post-analysis evaluation. 2. Generate medium fidelity parametrized CAD. • Generate parametrized CAD components for the CAT example case via either user-defined modules called within the geometry generation or by defeatured/parametrized CAD, including DCLL blanket matched to divertor boundary and magnets. Define materials, labels, and boundary conditions for passing the mesh to CFD tools. 3. Demonstrate multiphysics magnet analysis. • Demonstrate magnet analysis workflow called from the FREDA workflow, and 4. Demonstrate nuclear analysis. • Add model to OpenFOAM and/or other codes possibly including Diablo to account for tritium diffusion in solids.

Gamma-Ray Mirrors. Quarterly Progress Report Q3 FY20 April-June 2020

During the third quarter of FY20, the optic design, or Phase II Task 2 of the project, continued. Our effort was focused on verifying 3D ray-tracing simulations representative of the IFEL set-up with cross-code comparison. Simulations for a single reflection Kirkpatrick-Baez optic showed the feasibility of a design that provides 1D focusing at the detector. Following an increase in scope of work in June, we have been actively engaging in preparations to conduct an additional experiment at IFEL before the end of the fiscal year.

Tribal Colleges and Universities/Advanced Manufacturing Network Initiative (Q3 FY2020 Progress Report)

The National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) initiated the Minority Serving Institution Partnership Plan (MSIPP) to 1) align investments in a university capacity and workforce development with the NNSA mission to develop the needed skills and talent for NNSA's enduring technical workforce at the laboratories and production plants, and 2) to enhance research and education at under-represented colleges and universities. Out of this effort, MSIPP launched a new consortium in early FY17 focused on Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) known as the Advanced Manufacturing Network Initiative (AMNI). This consortium has been extended for FY20 and FY21. The following report summarizes the status update during this quarter.

PV Performance Modeling and Stakeholder Engagement (Q3 FY2020 Project Report)

The objectives of this project are as follows: 1. Reduce uncertainty in PV performance models by developing and validating new and improved models and submodes. 2. Create and manage an open source repository of modeling functions and data. 3. Build and grow the PV Performance Modeling Collaborative; and, 4. Represent the US in the IEA PVPS Task 13 Working group.

Optimizing Bifacial PV Systems (Q3 FY2020 Project Report)

This project has four main technical objectives. Develop and improve bifacial performance models by adding the capability to evaluate electrical behavior and performance of bifacial modules and arrays under realistic field conditions including irradiance variability caused by racking, module frame, and position in the array. Instrument and monitor performance of fielded bifacial systems to validate performance models and to measure, analyze and publish on bifacial energy gain. These should include both research and commercial bifacial systems and cover a variety of deployment applications. Evaluate optimal bifacial system designs using simulations leveraging high performance computing, and also using full sized and miniaturized experimental field deployments. Establish and contribute to international test standards for bifacial system performance, testing, and safety, and work with the community to establish installation and siting best practices.

Preliminary Theoretical Analysis of Mixed Precision Krylov Subspace Methods (Q3 Report)

The third quarter of the project was spent performing theoretical finite precision analysis of Krylov subspace method variants that use mixed precision. Our focus here is on the Conjugate Gradient (CG) method and the Lanczos method. We have performed an analysis of maximum attainable accuracy for the classical CG method in which 3 precisions are used: a working precision ε, a precision ε IP for the inner product computations, and a precision ε MV for the matrix-vector products. Our results show that performing inner product computations in lower precision does not affect the attainable accuracy. Further, we have performed a complete error analysis of the s-step Lanczos algorithm. In this case, we show that the numerical behavior of the algorithm can be significantly improved by using extra precision in a small part of the computation. We summarize the main theorems in the remainder of the document. Other activities include attending biweekly xSDK meetings. The subsequent quarter will be spent finalizing these results into technical reports and/or manuscripts for submission to journals, as well as identifying opportunities for future work.

ATDM AD projects to ECP Report (Q3 FY2020)

The SPARC team has completed much of the workflow development needed for the coupled and uncoupled analyses needed to support our flight test validation work. The SPARC team has continued to make progress on development activities to support unsteady, full reentry vehicle aero analysis, which have focused on turbulence modeling, uniform mesh refinement, in-situ visualization (with the Paraview/Catalyst team), and performance analysis. The SPARC team is making solid progress towards our Q4 goal of demonstrating an improved Wall Modeled Large Eddy Simulation (WMLES) capability for standard geometries using high-order finite difference, discontinuous Galerkin, and low-dissipation finite volume methods. The SPARC team has met the minimum completion criteria for parts of the L1, including documenting performance and scaling of SPARC on Trinity, Sierra and Astra, and performing runs for the flight test validation case.

miniGAN: A Generative Adversarial Network proxy application WBS 2.2.6.08 ECP-2.1.3 (Q3 FY2020 Milestone Report) (V.1.0)

In order to support the machine learning co-design needs of ECP applications in current and future DOE HPC hardware, we have developed a generative adversarial network (GAN) proxy application, miniGAN, that has been released through the ECP proxy application suite. The proxy application is representative of the needs of ExaLearn's target applications, specifically the Cosmoflow and ExaGAN cosmology applications and the ExaWind energy application. The proxy application also demonstrates the first use of performance portable kernels within widely-used machine learning frameworks: PyTorch (Facebook) and Horovod (Uber). We provide performance scaling results for similar workloads to ExaGAN and a profile of individual GAN training components.

RCT Continuing Training (Q3, 2021) [Slides]

Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) serve an important part in the mission of Los Alamos National Laboratory by monitoring the diverse radiological conditions at the Lab. The role of RCTs is critical in maintaining personnel safety from radiological hazards and in keeping occupational radiation exposure As low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). This training content consists of two parts: viewing an online lecture and completing the associated exercise guide. The online lecture, presented here, will review performing job coverage and all of the necessary steps associated with it.
