Development of combined function dipole-quadrupole PMQs magnets for NSLS-II upgrade

This paper focuses on the R&D performed for the development of permanent magnets-based dipoles-quadrupoles combined function magnets (PMQs) for the future NSLSII upgrade “complex bend” lattice (CB). This new lattice uses PMQs that provide both bending (dipole) and strong focusing (quadrupole) magnetic field on the electron beam. The permanent magnet (PM) technology is suitable for the high magnetic field strengths (0.5 T, 130 T/m) required for such combine function magnets. PM technology leads to a compact magnet design that is essential in realizing the complex bend lattice concept, as well as a passive magnet solution which does not require electrical power supply reducing power consumption by ~ 80% (from 1.7 MW to 0.3 MW for NSLS-II). Two PMQs magnets designs are under consideration: A hybrid design that use both PM and soft iron poles, and Halbach type that is a pure PM design. Both PMQs designs present challenges in achieving the specified magnetic field quality due to their higher sensitivity to errors (mechanical tolerances and PM properties). This paper presents cost-effective designs and prototypes results for hybrid and Halbach PMQs, addressing various technical challenges while meeting the field requirements of the complex bend lattice for the NSLS-II upgrade.

Quantum phase crossover in the spherical mean-field plus quadrupole–quadrupole and pairing model with two j-orbits

The shape phase crossover in the mean-field plus the geometric quadrupole–quadrupole and pairing model within two [Formula: see text]-orbits is analyzed, for which a simple description of [Formula: see text]Sn confined in the lowest [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] orbits above the [Formula: see text]Sn core is demonstrated to reveal the crossover behavior of the model. It is shown that [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] in this case may serve as effective order parameters for even–even and odd-A systems, respectively, from which the shape phase crossover from the rotation-like phase to the superconducting-like phase can be observed with variation of the number of valence neutrons.

Online multi-objective Bayesian optimization of injection efficiency and beam lifetime with skew quadrupoles at NSLS-II

At NSLS-II, the vertical emittance of electron beam is typically blown up to ~30 pm with a coupling wave to increase beam lifetime during user operation. As more and more insertion devices are added to the storage ring, injection efficiency to the ring drops noticeably in certain machine states, apparently due to degraded dynamic apertures. To help alleviate this issue, we have recently performed online multi-objective Bayesian optimization to increase injection efficiency while maintaining beam lifetime, by adjusting the strengths of 15 skew quadrupoles in non-dispersive sections. We report the results of this optimization effort.

Supersonic Quadrupole Noise Theory for High-Speed Helicopter Rotors

High-speed helicopter rotor impulsive noise prediction is an important problem of aeroacoustics. The deterministic quadrupoles have been shown to contribute significantly to high-speed impulsive (HSI) noise of rotors, particularly when the phenomenon of delocalization occurs. At high rotor-tip speeds, some of the quadrupole sources lie outside the sonic circle and move at supersonic speed. Brentner has given a formulation suitable for efficient prediction of quadrupole noise inside the sonic circle. In this paper, we give a simple formulation based on the acoustic analogy that is valid for both subsonic and supersonic quadrupole noise prediction. Like the formulation of Brentner, the model is exact for an observer in the far field and in the rotor plane and is approximate elsewhere. We give the full analytic derivation of this formulation in the paper. We present the method of implementation on a computer for supersonic quadrupoles using marching cubes for constructing the influence surface (Sigma surface) of an observer space- time variable (x; t). We then present several examples of noise prediction for both subsonic and supersonic quadrupoles. It is shown that in the case of transonic flow over rotor blades, the inclusion of the supersonic quadrupoles improves the prediction of the acoustic pressure signature. We show the equivalence of the new formulation to that of Brentner for subsonic quadrupoles. It is shown that the regions of high quadrupole source strength are primarily produced by the shock surface and the flow over the leading edge of the rotor. The primary role of the supersonic quadrupoles is to increase the width of a strong acoustic signal.

Long-range quadrupole electron-phonon interaction from first principles

Lattice vibrations in materials induce perturbations on the electron dynamics in the form of long-range (dipole and quadrupole) and short-range (octopole and higher) potentials. The dipole Fröhlich term can be included in current first-principles electron-phonon (e-ph) calculations and is present only in polar materials. The quadrupole e-ph interaction is present in both polar and nonpolar materials, but currently it cannot be computed from first principles. In this work, we show an approach to compute the quadrupole e-ph interaction and include it in ab initio calculations of e-ph matrix elements. The accuracy of the approach is demonstrated by comparing with direct density functional perturbation theory calculations. We apply our method to silicon as a case of a nonpolar semiconductor and tetragonal PbTiO 3 as a case of a polar piezoelectric material. In both materials we find that the quadrupole term strongly impacts the e-ph matrix elements. Analysis of e-ph interactions for different phonon modes reveals that the quadrupole term mainly affects optical modes in silicon and acoustic modes in PbTiO 3 , although the quadrupole term is needed for all modes to achieve quantitative accuracy. The effect of the quadrupole e-ph interaction on electron scattering processes and transport is shown to be important. Our approach enables accurate studies of e-ph interactions in broad classes of nonpolar, polar, and piezoelectric materials.

Study of Quadrupole Fringe Fields in the Interaction Region of the Hadron Storage Ring of the Electron Ion Collider

Fringe fields in quadrupole magnets are usually neglected in studies of beam dynamics at accelerators. However, the extreme optical parameters present in the final focus of a collider such as the Electron–Ion Collider (EIC) may give rise to effects that should not be overlooked. The calculation of quadrupole fringe fields presented in this study follows the procedure outlined in Ref. [1], specialized to the case of a straight reference orbit (i.e., with no dipole field component). A right-handed Cartesian coordinate system is employed, with the $z$-axis aligned with the quadrupole axis and $x$ and $y$ denoting the horizontal and vertical transverse coordinates, respectively. The magnetic quadrupole field gradient, $G = \partial B_y / \partial x$, transitions from its peak value inside the quadrupole—where it is nearly independent of the longitudinal coordinate $z$—to zero at some distance beyond the magnet edge. Consequently, $G$ is treated as a function of $z$. The region over which this variation occurs is defined as the quadrupole fringe field region. The study begins with the development of a description of the magnetic field in the fringe region using a power-series expansion in the transverse coordinates $x$and $y$, consistent with the longitudinally varying gradient. A model for the $z$-dependence of the gradient is then proposed and adjusted to reproduce magnetic field data obtained from three-dimensional field calculations. To evaluate the impact of the fringe fields on beam dynamics, the corresponding vector potential is derived and incorporated into a Hamiltonian formulation of particle motion. The significance of the fringe fields is quantified by calculating the amplitude-dependent tune shift from the Hamiltonian. Using linear beam optics parameters of the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) of the EIC, the tune shift due to the fringe fields of all quadrupole magnets in the IR-6 interaction region is evaluated. Finally, the resulting tune shifts are compared with those arising from other nonlinear field components present in the HSR.

Quadrupole wiggler for a collinear wakefield accelerator

A quadrupole wiggler consisting of a row of alternating-polarity permanent magnet-excited quadrupoles is used in a collinear wakefield accelerator under development at Argonne National Laboratory. Fine translational and angular adjustment mechanisms are implemented in all quadrupoles to obtain a better than 1−μ⁢m precision in the alignment of quadrupole wiggler assemblies. The quadrupole’s magnetic and mechanical designs are described. Two wiggler prototypes were fabricated, aligned, and characterized performing pulsed wire magnetic measurements. The sensitivity of the quadrupole wiggler alignment to the ambient temperature was measured.

Quadrupole topological photonic crystals

Quadrupole topological phases, exhibiting protected boundary states that are themselves topological insulators of lower dimensions, have recently been of great interest. Extensions of these ideas from current tight binding models to continuum theories for realistic materials require the identification of quantized invariants describing the bulk quadrupole order. Here we identify the analog of quadrupole order in Maxwell’s equations for a gyromagnetic photonic crystal (PhC) through a double-band-inversion process. The quadrupole moment is quantized by the simultaneous presence of crystalline symmetry and broken time-reversal symmetry, which is confirmed using three independent methods: analysis of symmetry eigenvalues, numerical calculations of the nested Wannier bands and the expectation value of the quadrupole operator. Furthermore, we reveal the boundary manifestations of quadrupole phases as quantized edge polarizations and fractional corner charges. The latter are the consequence of a filling anomaly of energy bands as first predicted in electronic systems.

Single Quadrupole Multiple Fragment Ion Monitoring Quantitative Mass Spectrometry

Single quadrupole mass spectrometry (MS) with enhanced in-source multiple fragment ion monitoring was designed to perform high sensitivity quantitative mass analyses. Enhanced in-source fragmentation amplifies fragmentation from traditional soft electrospray ionization producing fragment ions that have been found to be identical to those generated in tandem MS. We have combined enhanced in-source fragmentation data with criteria established by the European Union Commission Directive 2002/657/EC for electron ionization single quadrupole quantitative analysis to perform quantitative analyses. These experiments were performed on multiple types of complex samples that included a mixture of 50 standards, as well as cell and plasma extracts. The dynamic range for these quantitative analyses was comparable to triple quadrupole multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) analyses at up to 5 orders of magnitude with the cell and plasma extracts showing similar matrix effects across both platforms. Amino acid and fatty acid measurements performed from certified NIST 1950 plasma with isotopically labeled standards demonstrated accuracy in the range of 91–110% for the amino acids, 76–129% for the fatty acids, and good precision (coefficient of variation <10%). To enhance specificity, a newly developed correlated ion monitoring algorithm was designed to facilitate these analyses. This algorithm autonomously processes, aligns, filters, and compiles multiple ions within one chromatogram enabling both precursor and in-source fragment ions to be correlated within a single chromatogram, also enabling the detection of coeluting species based on precursor and fragment ion ratios. Single quadrupole instrumentation can provide MRM level quantitative performance by monitoring/correlating precursor and fragment ions facilitating high sensitivity analysis on existing single quadrupole instrumentation that are generally inexpensive, easy to operate, and technically less complex.

Observation of a dipole-bound excited state in 4-ethynylphenoxide and comparison with the quadrupole-bound excited state in the isoelectronic 4-cyanophenoxide

Negative ions do not possess Rydberg states, but can have Rydberg-like nonvalence excited states near the electron detachment threshold, including dipole-bound states (DBSs) and quadrupole-bound states (QBSs). While DBSs have been studied extensively, quadrupole-bound excited states have been more rarely observed. 4-cyanophenoxide (4CP – ) was the first anion observed to possess a quadrupole-bound exited state 20 cm-1 below its detachment threshold. Here we report the observation of a DBS in the isoelectronic 4-ethynylphenoxide anion (4EP – ), providing a rare opportunity to compare the behaviors of a dipole-bound and a quadrupole-bound excited state in a pair of very similar anions. Photodetachment spectroscopy (PDS) of cryogenically-cooled 4EP – reveals a DBS 76 cm -1 below its detachment threshold. Photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) at 266 nm shows that the electronic structure of 4EP – and 4CP – are nearly identical. The observed vibrational features in both the PDS and PES, as well as autodetachment from the nonvalence excited states, are also found to be similar for both anions. However, resonant two-photon detachment (R2PD) from the bound vibrational ground state is observed to be very different for the DBS in 4EP – and the QBS in 4CP – . The R2PD spectra reveal that decays take place from both the DBS and QBS to the respective anion ground electronic states within the 5 ns detachment laser pulse due to internal conversion followed by intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR), but the decay mechanisms appear to be very different. In the R2PD spectrum of 4EP – , we observe strong threshold electron signals, which are due to detachment, by the second photon, of highly rotationally excited anions resulted from the decay of the DBS. On the other hand, in the R2PD spectrum of 4CP – we observe well-resolved vibrational peaks due to the three lowest-frequency vibrational modes of 4CP – , which are populated from the decay of the QBS. Here, the different behaviors of the R2PD spectra suggest unexpected differences between the relaxation mechanisms of the dipole-bound and quadrupole-bound excited states.

Understanding the Quadrupole Mass Filter and Testing a High-Resolution QMS RGA for ITER

A common type of residual gas analyzer is the quadrupole mass spectrometer. One of the main components within this instrument is a mass filter known as the quadrupole. It is responsible for the selective throughput of the ionized gas particles - by ascending mass number - prior to ion impacts on the analyzer (or detector) surface from which the ion current signal is generated for processing. However, the quadrupole is not fully described in relation to the electric field characteristics and the function as an ion mass separator. This paper describes the basic origins of the electrical design, the intricate assembly criteria, and performance of the quadrupole within the spectrometer. A specialized quadrupole mass spectrometer is part of a configuration for a diagnostic gas analyzer system planned for ITER, a fusion research machine. It has a verified capability, essential as a diagnostic criterion for this reactor project, to successfully deconvolute the mass signals of Helium-4 and deuterium (reactor fuel exhaust gases, separated by only 0.026 atomic mass units), down to a relative three-percent concentration of the former gas. The associated preliminary testing, performed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is also addressed. Finally, one of the key parameters used to express gas concentration, the relative sensitivity factor, will be explained, including an evaluation of dependency on other variables.

Dipole and quadrupole tests of the isotropy of gamma-ray burst locations

Dipole and quadrupole tests of the isotropy of locations on the sphere are discussed. The statistics (cos theta), the dipole moment to the Galactic center, and mean (sin-squared b - 1/3), the quadrupole moment about the Galactic plane, can be used to search for significant anisotropies in galactic coordinates. Such coordinate-system-based tests are the most powerful tests of dipole and quadrupole anisotropies in the particular coordinate system. Two statistics which have not been previously applied to gamma-ray burst data are described. The Rayleigh-Watson statistic measures the size of the dipole moment of the locations and the Bingham statistic measures the deviation of the eigenvalues of a quadrupole-like matrix from the values expected for isotropy. Tests based upon these two statistics search for dipole and quadrupole moments in spherical location data in a coordinate-system-independent, and thus model-independent, manner. They can detect an anisotropy in any direction and yield an analytic statistical significance to any detected anisotropy. The statistical tests are demonstrated herein using a variety of data sets.
