Quaternary structure independent folding of voltage-gated ion channel pore domain subunits

Every voltage-gated ion channel (VGIC) has a pore domain (PD) made from four subunits, each comprising an antiparallel transmembrane helix pair bridged by a loop. The extent to which PD subunit structure requires quaternary interactions is unclear. In this report we present crystal structures of a set of bacterial voltage-gated sodium channel (BacNa V ) 'pore only' proteins that reveal a surprising collection of non-canonical quaternary arrangements in which the PD tertiary structure is maintained. This context-independent structural robustness, supported by molecular dynamics simulations, indicates that VGIC-PD tertiary structure is independent of quaternary interactions. This fold occurs throughout the VGIC superfamily and in diverse transmembrane and soluble proteins. Strikingly, characterization of PD subunit-binding Fabs indicates that non-canonical quaternary PD conformations can occur in full-length VGICs. Together, our data demonstrate that the VGIC-PD is an autonomously folded unit. This property has implications for VGIC biogenesis, understanding functional states, de novo channel design, and VGIC structural origins.

Semi Transparent Three-Dimensional Macroporous Quaternary Oxynitride Photoanodes for Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Semi transparent three-dimensional macroporous (3DM) photoanodes based on quaternary oxynitrides have the potential to simultaneously realize superior light harvesting and efficient charge transfer in a tandem photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell. A 3DM CaTaO 2 N photoanode was prepared for the first time on a GaN/Al 2 O 3 substrate via a chemical route, and it exhibits a high transmittance of >60% in the wide solar spectrum and a photoresponse onset at −0.3 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (V RHE ) under simulated solar illumination. In particular, a plateau photocurrent density of 0.21 mA cm –2 was achieved at a low potential of 0.4 V RHE , which was 1.6-fold and more than 50-fold higher than a two-dimensional macroporous (2DM) CaTaO 2 N/GaN/Al 2 O 3 photoanode and a conventional particle-based CaTaO 2 N/GaN/Al 2 O 3 photoanode, respectively. The bicontinuous, interconnected pore structure within this 3DM film can improve charge carrier separation and collection by reducing the average diffusion distance for minority carriers toward the electrolyte. Optical measurements and simulations verified the enhanced sunlight harvesting in the 3DM photoanode, which was ascribed to the concentrated distribution of the electric field and multiple scattering. Furthermore, this study provides guidance for future synthesis of highly efficient semitransparent 3DM quaternary oxynitride-based photoanodes for a tandem PEC device.

Structural, Optical, and Electronic Properties of Two Quaternary Chalcogenide Semiconductors: Ag 2 SrSiS 4 and Ag 2 SrGeS 4

Quaternary chalcogenide materials have long been a source of semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. Recent studies on the I2-II-IV-X4 (I = Ag, Cu, Li; II = Ba, Sr, Eu, Pb; IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) materials have shown particular versatility and promise among these compounds. These semiconductors take advantage of a diverse bonding scheme and chemical differences among cations to target a degree of anti-site defect resistance. Within this set of compounds, the materials containing both Ag and Sr have not been experimentally studied and leave a gap in the full understanding of the family. Here, we have synthesized powders and single crystals of two Ag- and Sr-containing compounds, Ag 2 SrSiS 4 and Ag 2 SrGeS 4 , each found to form in the tetragonal I4¯2m structure of Ag 2 BaGeS 4 . During the synthesis targeting the title compounds, two additional materials, Ag 2 Sr 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 S 8 , have also been identified. Furthermore, these cubic compounds represent impurity phases during the synthesis of Ag 2 SrSiS 4 and Ag 2 SrGeS 4 . We show through hybrid density functional theory calculations that Ag 2 SrSiS 4 and Ag 2 SrGeS 4 have highly dispersive band edge states and indirect band gaps, experimentally measured as 2.08(1) and 1.73(2) eV, respectively. Second-harmonic generation measurements on Ag 2 SrSiS 4 and Ag 2 SrGeS 4 powders show frequency doubling capabilities in the near-infrared range.

Distance‐based reconstruction of protein quaternary structures from inter‐chain contacts

Abstract Predicting the quaternary structure of protein complex is an important problem. Inter‐chain residue‐residue contact prediction can provide useful information to guide the ab initio reconstruction of quaternary structures. However, few methods have been developed to build quaternary structures from predicted inter‐chain contacts. Here, we develop the first method based on gradient descent optimization (GD) to build quaternary structures of protein dimers utilizing inter‐chain contacts as distance restraints. We evaluate GD on several datasets of homodimers and heterodimers using true/predicted contacts and monomer structures as input. GD consistently performs better than both simulated annealing and Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation. Starting from an arbitrarily quaternary structure randomly initialized from the tertiary structures of protein chains and using true inter‐chain contacts as input, GD can reconstruct high‐quality structural models for homodimers and heterodimers with average TM‐score ranging from 0.92 to 0.99 and average interface root mean square distance from 0.72 Å to 1.64 Å. On a dataset of 115 homodimers, using predicted inter‐chain contacts as restraints, the average TM‐score of the structural models built by GD is 0.76. For 46% of the homodimers, high‐quality structural models with TM‐score ≥ 0.9 are reconstructed from predicted contacts. There is a strong correlation between the quality of the reconstructed models and the precision and recall of predicted contacts. Only a moderate precision or recall of inter‐chain contact prediction is needed to build good structural models for most homodimers. Moreover, GD improves the quality of quaternary structures predicted by AlphaFold2 on a Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction–Critical Assessments of Predictions of Interactions dataset.

Electronic and Thermal Properties of the Cation Substitution-Derived Quaternary Chalcogenide CuInSnSe 4

Quaternary chalcogenides continue to be of interest for a variety of technological applications, with physical properties stemming from their structural complexity and stoichiometric variation. In certain structure types, partial vacancies on specific lattice positions present an opportunity to investigate electrical and thermal properties in light of these lattice defects. In this work, we investigated the structural, thermal, and electronic properties of CuInSnSe 4 , a material that belongs to a relatively unexplored class of quaternary chalcogenides with a defect adamantine crystal structure. First-principles calculations together with experimental measurements revealed a chalcopyrite-like structure with inherent vacancies and characteristic s–p and p–d orbital hybridizations in the electronic structure of the material. Cation disorder and lattice anharmonicity result in very low thermal conductivity with values significantly lower than those for related compositions. In conclusion, this work reveals the fundamental physical properties of a previously uninvestigated quaternary chalcogenide and may aid investigations of similar as well as other quaternary chalcogenide compositions.

Effects of irradiation damage on the hardness and elastic properties of quaternary and high entropy transition metal diborides

Multi-principal component transition metal (TM) diborides represent a class of high-entropy ceramics (HECs) that have received considerable interest in recent years owing to their promising properties for extreme environment applications that include thermal/ environmental barriers, hypersonic vehicles, turbine engines, and next-generation nuclear reactors. While the addition of chemical disorder through the random distribution of TM elements on the cation sublattice has offered opportunities to tailor elastic stiffness and hardness, the effects of irradiation-induced structural damage on the physical properties of these complex materials have remained largely unexplored. To this end, changes in the hardness and elastic moduli of a high-entropy TM diboride (Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 Ta 0.2 Ti 0.2 Zr 0.2 )B 2 and three of its quaternary subsets following irradiation with 10 MeV gold (Au) ions to fluences of up to 6 × 10 15 Au cm -2 are investigated at the micrometer and sub-micrometer length-scales via the dispersion of laser-generated surface acoustic waves (SAW) and nanoindentation, respectively. The nanoindentation measurements show that the TM diborides exhibit an initial increase in hardness following irradiation with energetic Au ions, with a subsequent decrease in hardness following further irradiation. One quaternary composition, (Hf 1/3 Ta 1/3 Ti 1/3 )B 2 , exhibits a notable exception to the trend and continues to exhibit an increase in hardness with ion irradiation fluence. Although differences in the absolute values of the effective elastic moduli obtained from the measured SAW dispersion and nanoindentation are observed (and attributed to microstructural variations at the measurement length-scale), both techniques yield similar trends in the form of an initial reduction and subsequent saturation in the elastic modulus with increasing ion irradiation fluence. The quaternary TM diboride (Hf 1/3 Ta 1/3 Ti 1/3 )B 2 again exhibits a departure from this trend. The high-entropy TM diboride (Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 Ta 0.2 Ti 0.2 Zr 0.2 )B 2 exhibits the greatest recovery in hardness and modulus when irradiated to high ion fluences following initial changes at low fluence, indicating superior resistance to radiation-induced damage over its quaternary counterparts. Opportunities for designing HECs with superior hardness and modulus for enhanced radiation resistance (compared to their single constituent counterparts) by tailoring chemical disorder and bond character in the lattice are discussed.

Exchange-correlation functional challenges in modeling quaternary chalcogenides

The development of next-generation quaternary chalcogenides, such as Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and Cu2ZnGeS4 (CZGS), for solar energy and thermoelectric applications hinges upon both careful experimentation and accurate quantum mechanical modeling. To address the latter, many have turned to density functional theory (DFT), which offers several choices for the approximate treatment of electron exchange and correlation (XC). Popular XC functionals include the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the recently developed strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA. Extensions of DFT functionals, such as adding a Hubbard U correction and introducing a fraction of the Fock exchange (hybrid functionals), have been used widely to model systems containing 3d metal ions. However, no studies yet have compared comprehensively PBE(+U) and SCAN(+U) in the quality of their predictions of the bulk and defect thermodynamics of quaternary chalcogenides, which play a critical role in device fabrication and performance. Hence, here we calculate the (i) 0 K formation energies of bulk Ge compounds and (ii) neutral defect formation energies including charge-balanced (e.g., CuZn + ZnCu) and charge-imbalanced (e.g., CuSn) combinations of antisites and vacancies in CZTS and CZGS using the PBE, PBE +U, SCAN, SCAN +U, and the hybrid Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof XC frameworks. We find that the formation energies of charge-imbalanced defects are more sensitive to the choice of the XC functional than those of charge-balanced defects, which can be explained by the differences in the extent of penalization of defect-generated delocalized electrons/holes by PBE, PBE +U, SCAN, and SCAN +U. Additionally, our results show that SCAN systematically underbinds Ge-containing compounds, thus highlighting the need for even further improvement of XC functionals. Based on our findings, we recommend the use of SCAN for modeling quaternary chalcogenides because its errors are systematic, and it has the firmest theoretical underpinning. Our work provides guidance for future modeling of quaternary chalcogenides.

Thermal Properties of the Quaternary Chalcogenide BaCdSnSe 4

The fields of nonlinear optics, photovoltaics, and thermoelectrics have been strongly impacted by materials research, and quaternary chalcogenides are one general class of materials that has recently generated strong interest. An understanding of the thermal properties is paramount in these and other applications of interest. The thermal properties of BaCdSnSe 4 , a quaternary chalcogenide that is of interest for applications in nonlinear optics, are reported. Specifically, the thermal conductivity over a large temperature range and heat capacity are evaluated in light of the structural features of this material. Low thermal conductivity results from the complex unit cell as well as local dynamic disorder from Cd in the CdSe 4 tetrahedra in the crystal structure. Finally, the results and analyses reported herein are presented to enhance the fundamental understanding of the thermal properties of these materials, and can be related and applied to other quaternary chalcogenides that are of interest for energy-related applications.

Design of High-Performance Lead-Free Quaternary Antiperovskites for Photovoltaics via Ion Type Inversion and Anion Ordering

The emergence of halide double perovskites significantly increases the compositional space for lead-free and air-stable photovoltaic absorbers compared to halide perovskites. Nevertheless, most halide double perovskites exhibit oversized band gaps (>1.9 eV) or dipole-forbidden optical transition, which are unfavorable for efficient single-junction solar cell applications. The current device performance of halide double perovskite is still inferior to that of lead-based halide perovskites, such as CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ). Here, by ion type inversion and anion ordering on perovskite lattice sites, two new classes of pnictogen-based quaternary antiperovskites with the formula of X 6 B 2 AA' and X 6 BB'A 2 are designed. Phase stability and tunable band gaps in these quaternary antiperovskites are demonstrated based on first-principles calculations. Further photovoltaic-functionality-directed screening of these materials leads to the discovery of 5 stable compounds (Ca 6 N 2 AsSb, Ca 6 N 2 PSb, Sr 6 N 2 AsSb, Sr 6 N 2 PSb, and Ca 6 NPSb 2 ) with suitable direct band gaps, small carrier effective masses and low exciton binding energies, and dipole-allowed strong optical absorption, which are favorable properties for a photovoltaic absorber material. The calculated theoretical maximum solar cell efficiencies based on these five compounds are all larger than 29%, comparable to or even higher than that of the MAPbI 3 based solar cell. Finally, our work reveals the huge potential of quaternary antiperovskites in the optoelectronic field and provides a new strategy to design lead-free and air-stable perovskite-based photovoltaic absorber materials.

The Zonal Patterns in Late Quaternary Tropical South American Precipitation

Speleothem oxygen isotope records (δ 18 O) of tropical South American rainfall in the late Quaternary show a zonal “South American Precipitation Dipole” (SAPD). The dipole is characterized by opposing east-west precipitation anomalies compared to the present—wetter in the east and drier in the west at the mid-Holocene (~7 ka), and drier in the east and wetter in the west at the Last Glacial Maximum (~21 ka). However, the SAPD remains enigmatic because it is expressed differently in western versus eastern δ18O records and isotope-enabled climate model simulations usually misrepresent the magnitude and/or spatial pattern of δ 18 O change. Here, we address the SAPD enigma in two parts. First, we re-interpret the δ 18 O data to account for upwind rainout effects that are known to be pervasive in tropical South America, but are not always considered in Quaternary paleoclimate studies. Our revised interpretation reconciles the δ 18 O data with cave infiltration and other proxy records, and indicates that the centroid of tropical South American rainfall has migrated zonally over time. Second, using an energy balance model of tropical atmospheric circulation, we hypothesize that zonal migration of the precipitation centroid can be explained by regional energy budget shifts, such as changing Saharan albedo associated with the African Humid Period, that have not been modeled in previous SAPD studies. This hypothesis of a migrating precipitation centroid presents a new framework for interpreting δ18O records from tropical South America and may help explain the zonal rainfall anomalies that predate the late Quaternary.

Taming Molecular Folding: Anion-Templated Foldamers with Tunable Quaternary Structures

Higher-order foldamers represent a unique class of supramolecules at the forefront of molecular design. Herein we control quaternary folding using a novel approach that combines halogen bonding (XBing) and hydrogen bonding (HBing). We present the first anion-templated double helices induced by halogen bonds (XBs) and stabilized by “hydrogen bond enhanced halogen bonds” (HBeXBs). Our findings demonstrate that the number and orientation of hydrogen bond (HB) and XB donors significantly affect the quaternary structure and guest selectivity of two similar oligomers. Finally, this research offers new design elements to engineer foldamers and tailor their quaternary structure for specific guest binding.

Predicting ductility in quaternary B 2 -like alloys

Although intermetallics with a B2-type crystal structure are typically brittle, a class of B2 intermetallics that demonstrates unusually high ductility has been reported. A set of recently developed B2-like quaternary precious metal-rare earth alloys also includes compositions with significant ductility. To predict ductility in these systems, we have adapted a computational energy-based metric based on slip systems and relative stability of planar defects, developed to predict ductility in B2 binary systems, for use with quaternary B2-like alloys. Here, the computational metric successfully predicts the experimentally-determined ductility or brittleness of 15 B2-like quaternary precious metal-rare earth and refractory alloys.

Quaternary and quinary modifications of the eutectic superalloy gamma/gamma prime-delta

Quaternary modifications and quinary additions from the elements Co, Ti, Mo, W, Re, B, Si, and Ta to the baseline quaternary alloy gamma/gamma prime-delta Ni-19.7 at.% Nb-6.0 at.% Cr-2.5 at.% Al are examined for various concentrations. From modification studies five alloys were chosen for detailed mechanical property characterization: Ni-19.7 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-1.0 W; Ni-19.7 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-1.0 Mo; Ni-18.6 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-0.87 Ti; Ni-20.2 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-2.0 Co; and Ni-17.9 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-3.0 Ta. It is shown that extensive alloying of the baseline quaternary alloy is possible for elements exhibiting a wide solubility range in both phases, and that limited substitution of W, Mo, Re, Si, and B is possible for elements with restricted solid solubility especially in the delta phase. Improvement of creep rupture strength and cyclic oxidation resistance at 1100 C is discussed.

Tertiary and Quaternary Research with Remote Sensing Methods

Problems encountered in mapping the Quaternary section of the Wind River Region using remote sensing methods are discussed. Analysis of the stratigraphic section is a fundamental aspect of the geologic study of sedimentary basins. Stratigraphic analysis of post-Cretaceous rocks in the Wind River Basin encounters problems of a distinctly different character from those involved in studying the pre-Cretaceous section. The interior of the basin is predominantly covered by Tertiary and Quaternary sediments. These rocks, except on the basin margin to the north, are mostly flat lying or gently dipping. The Tertiary section consists of sandstones, siltstones, and tuffaceous sediments, some variegated, but in general poorly bedded and of great lithologic similarity. The Quaternary sediments consist of terrace, fan, and debris tongue deposits, unconsolidated alluvium occupying the bottoms of modern watercourses, deposits of eolian origin and tufa. Terrace and fan deposits are compositionally diverse and reflect the lithologic diversity of the source terranes.

Compression behavior of quaternary and higher order solid-solution L1(2) trialuminides

Results from preliminary studies undertaken to evaluate the existence of single-phase L1(2) solid solutions between pairs of ternary L1(2) trialuminides are presented. Two-kilogram ingots of selected quaternary compositions were cast, homogenized and forged into pancakes; compression specimens were machined from the forgings and tested as a function of temperature. The results are compared against existing data for the ternary alloys. The ternary L1(2) trialuminides Al66Ti25Mn9, Al67Ti25Cr8, and Al22Ti8Fe3 were found to exhibit continuous solubility in one another. The quaternary Cr-Mn composition does not indicate any strength advantage over its ternary counterparts. The continuous replacement of Mn with Fe enhances the strength of the quaternary compound over the ternary Al66Ti25 Mn9.

Highly Efficient Layer-by-Layer Processed Quaternary Organic Solar Cells with Improved Charge Transport and Reduced Energy Loss

We report how to improve charge transport properties and reduce energy losses are the two main challenges of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a new device fabrication strategy that combines the layer-by-layer (LBL) method and a quaternary active layer is demonstrated to realize highly efficient photovoltaic performance of the OSCs based on PM6:PM7/Y6:O1-2F. The introduction of the second donor, PM7,forms a cascade energy-level alignment with PM6 that facilitates effective charge transfer. The second acceptor, O1-2F, which is poorly miscible with the donors, helps to reduce the miscibility between the donors and acceptors, and thus delivers a more desirable vertical phase separation of the active layer. Furthermore, the alloy acceptor of O1-2F and Y6 can optimize the horizontal and vertical morphology of the active layer, forming an effective charge separation and continuous charge transport channel. As a result, the PM6:PM7/Y6:O1-2F system shows a distinct increase in charge mobility and a reduced nonradiative lossΔVnrof 0.231 V compared to the PM6/Y6 system, achieving a high-power conversion efficiency of18.23%. The results indicate that the quaternary LBL OSCs are promising for future large-scale and industrial manufacture of the OSCs.

Combinatorial Synthesis and High-Throughput Characterization of Microstructure and Phase Transformation in Ni–Ti–Cu–V Quaternary Thin-Film Library

Ni–Ti–based shape memory alloys (SMAs) have found widespread use in the last 70 years, but improving their functional stability remains a key quest for more robust and advanced applications. Named for their ability to retain their processed shape as a result of a reversible martensitic transformation, SMAs are highly sensitive to compositional variations. Alloying with ternary and quaternary elements to fine-tune the lattice parameters and the thermal hysteresis of an SMA, therefore, becomes a challenge in materials exploration. Combinatorial materials science allows streamlining of the synthesis process and data management from multiple characterization techniques. In this study, a composition spread of Ni–Ti–Cu–V thin-film library was synthesized by magnetron co-sputtering on a thermally oxidized Si wafer. Composition-dependent phase transformation temperature and microstructure were investigated and determined using high-throughput wavelength dispersive spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and temperature-dependent resistance measurements. Of the 177 compositions in the materials library, 32 were observed to have shape memory effect, of which five had zero or near-zero thermal hysteresis. These compositions provide flexibility in the operating temperature regimes that they can be used in. A phase map for the quaternary system and correlations of functional properties are discussed with respect to the local microstructure and composition of the thin-film library.
