iSPECTRON: a simulation interface for linear and nonlinear spectra with ab-initio quantum chemistry software

We introduce iSPECTRON, an open source (under the Educational Community License version 2.0) program that parses data from common quantum chemistry software (NWChem, OpenMolcas, Gaussian, Cobramm, etc.), produces the input files for the simulation of linear and nonlinear spectroscopy of molecules with the Spectron code, and analyzes the spectra with a broad range of tools. Vibronic spectra are expressed in term of the electronic eigenstates, obtained through quantum chemistry computations, and vibrational/bath effects are incorporated in the framework of the displaced harmonic oscillator model, where all required quantities are computed at the Franck-Condon point. The code capabilities are illustrated by simulating linear absorption, transient absorption and two dimensional electronic spectra of the pyrene molecule. Two levels of electronic structure theory, TDDFT (with NWChem) and RASSCF/RASPT2 (with OpenMolcas), are compared where possible. Unveiling the Redox Noninnocence of Metallocorroles: Exploring K-Edge X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Spectroscopy with a Multiconfigurational Wave Function Approach

X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) is an advanced technique for probing the local electronic structure of catalysts, effectively identifying the noninnocent nature of ligands in transition-metal complexes. Metallocorroles with noninnocent corrole rings exhibit unusual electronic structures that challenge traditional density functional theory (DFT) methods, necessitating more rigorous approaches to describe electron correlation accurately. We explored K-edge XANES spectra of Fe, Mn, and Co metallocorroles using TDDFT and wave function-based methods. This is the first investigation employing multireference methods, specifically RASSCF, RASPT2, and MC-PDFT, to analyze the redox noninnocent nature of metallocorroles reflected in their XANES spectra. We quantified the noninnocent character of the corrole and the oxidation states of the metals, capturing more than singly excited excitations responsible for the pre-edge peak. Our findings demonstrate the importance of these advanced computational techniques for accurately predicting XANES spectra, providing a reliable understanding of the electronic properties of such complexes. In conclusion, this study offers a new strategy for investigating ligand redox noninnocence via integrated experimental and computational XANES.

Theoretical research program to study chemical reactions in AOTV bow shock tubes

Effort continued through this period to refine and expand the SIRIUS/ABACUS program package for CASSCF and RASSCF second derivatives. A new approach to computing the Gaussian integral derivatives that require much of the time in gradient and Hessian calculations was devised. Several different studies were undertaken in the area of application calculations. These include a study of proton transfer in the HF trimer, which provides an analog of rearrangement reactions, and the extension of our previous work on Be and Mg clusters to Ca clusters. In addition, a very accurate investigation of the lowest-lying potential curves of the O2 molecule was completed. These curves are essential for evaluating different models of the terrestrial atmosphere nightglow. The most effort this year was devoted to a large scale investigation of stationary points on the C4H4 surface, and the thermochemistry of acetylene/acetylene reaction.

The Fraternal Twins of Quartet O4(+)

Eleven stationary geometries of quartet O4(+) have been studied by ab initio methods. The geometries were optimized at the Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) level of theory and the energies were calculated by the multiconfigurational second order pertubation method (CASPT2), using Double-Zeta Plus polarization (DZP), Triple-Zeta Plus Double Polarization (TZ2P), average Atomic Natural Orbital (ANO) (5s4p2d) and average ANO (6s5p3d2f) basis sets. The rectangular and trans-planar structures are found to be the most stable, with an energy barrier to conversion between the two at the threshold of dissociation. Both have a delocalized hole and are stable relative to separated 02 and 02(+)by 11.0 and 11.5 kcal/mol for the rectangular and the 2 trans-planar structure, respectively, compared with the experimentally deduced energy in the range of 9.2 to 10.8 kcal/mol. The adiabatic ionization potentials of 04 and 02 are computed to be 11.67 and 12.21 eV, while experimental values are 11.66 and 12.07 eV, respectively. The vibrational frequencies have been computed for all degrees of freedom at the CASSCF level of theory. Symmetry breaking is found to be a particular problem in the computation of the antisymmetric stretch frequency for the delocalized structures at the CASSCF level of theory. Attempts to rectify these problems using the restricted active space self-consistent field (RASSCF) method leads to additional difficulties, but further analysis yields insight into the symmetry breaking and problems with earlier calculations. Finally, a nonorthogonal configuration interaction (CI) calculation based on the interaction of localized CASSCF wave functions using the Complete Active Space State Interation (CASSI) method leads to a balanced treatment of the antisymmetric stretch which is free from symmetry breaking. The study explains the four most prominent absorption frequencies observed in the partially unassigned IR spectrum of O4(+) isolated in solid neon as the antisymmetric OO stretch, and the combination band of the symmetric and antisymmetric 00 stretch of both the rectangular and trans-planar structures.
