Statics of circular-ring stiffeners for monocoque fuselages

For circular-ring stiffeners in monocoque fuselages the bending moments, axial forces, and shear forces under the action of applied external forces or a moment are accurately computed by known methods. Circular-ring stiffeners with variable moments of inertia are likewise considered. In comparison with the step-by-step and partially graphical procedure, the one here described is a more accurate and at the same time a simpler method.

Formulas for the Stress Analysis of Circular Rings in a Monocoque Fuselage

The formulas given in this report provide a simplified method for the stress-analysis of fuselage bulkheads that are approximately circular rings of uniform cross section. Complicated load systems acting on a ring can usually be resolved into simplified load systems; and formulas for moment, axial force, and shear for such simplified load systems are given in this report. Illustrative examples showing the use of this method in practical stress-analysis work are also included.

Comparison of Martian and lunar multi-ringed circular basins

Many similarities between Martian and lunar multi-ringed basins are outlined. There is a similar relation between basin size and number of rings; the second ring seems to appear in the crater-basin continuum in roughly the same diameter range. The similarities are tentatively considered great enough to indicate that Martian and lunar basins were formed by the same process. Morphological and statistical studies of lunar basins have strongly indicated this process to be impact.

Small bending and stretching of sandwich-type shells

A theory has been developed for small bending and stretching of sandwich-type shells. This theory is an extension of the known theory of homogeneous thin elastic shells. It was found that two effects are important in the present problem, which are not normally of importance in the theory of curved shells: (1) the effect of transverse shear deformation and (2) the effect of transverse normal stress deformation. The first of these two effects has been known to be of importance in the theory of plates and beams. The second effect was found to occur in a manner which is typical for shells and has no counterpart in flat-plate theory. The general results of this report have been applied to the solution of problems concerning flat plates, circular rings, circular cylindrical shells, and spherical shells. In each case numerical examples have been given, illustrating the magnitude of the effects of transverse shear and normal stress deformation.

Bending Tests of Ring-stiffened Circular Cylinders

Twenty-five ring-stiffened circular cylinders were loaded to failure in bending. The results are presented in the form of design curves which are applicable to cylinders with heavy rings that fail as a result of local buckling.

Passive Vibration Control of Airborne Equipment using a Circular Steel Ring

Vibration isolation is needed to protect avionics equipment from adverse aircraft vibration environments. Passive isolation is the simplest means to achieve this goal. The system used here consists of a circular steel ring with a lump mass on top and exposed to base excitation. Sinusoidal and filtered zero-mean Gaussian white noise are used to excite the structure and the acceleration response spectra at the top of the ring are computed. An experiment is performed to identify the natural frequencies and modal damping of the circular ring. Comparison is made between the analytical and experimental results and good agreement is observed. The ring response is also evaluated with a concentrated mass attached to the top of the ring. The effectiveness of the ring in isolating the equipment from base excitation is studied. The acceleration response spectra of a single degree of freedom system attached to the top of the ring are evaluated and the results are compared with those exposed directly to the base excitation. It is shown that a properly designed ring could effectively protect the avionics from possible damaging excitation levels.

Tests of Ring-stiffened Circular Cylinders Subjected to a Transverse Shear Load

Thirty-four circular cylinders stiffened by heavy rings were loaded to failure in combined bending and shear with a transverse shear load. The results are presented in the form of an interaction curve which is applicable to the design of ring-stiffened cylinders that fail as a result of local buckling. (author)

Application of Newton's method to the postbuckling of rings under pressure loadings

The postbuckling response of circular rings (or long cylinders) is examined. The rings are subjected to four types of external pressure loadings; each type of pressure is defined by its magnitude and direction at points on the buckled ring. Newton's method is applied to the nonlinear differential equations of the exact inextensional theory for the ring problem. A zeroth approximation for the solution of the nonlinear equations, based on the mode shape corresponding to the first buckling pressure, is derived in closed form for each of the four types of pressure. The zeroth approximation is used to start the iteration cycle in Newton's method to compute numerical solutions of the nonlinear equations. The zeroth approximations for the postbuckling pressure-deflection curves are compared with the converged solutions from Newton's method and with similar results reported in the literature.
