The CMS RPC system readiness for LHC Run-3 data taking

During Run-3, the LHC is preparing to deliver instantaneous luminosity in the range from 5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 to 7.5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . To ensure stable data taking, providing redundant information for robust muon triggering, reconstruction and identification, the CMS RPC collaboration has used the opportunity given by the LHC long shutdown 2 (LS2), to perform a series of maintenance and preparation activities for the new data taking period. The overall performance of the RPC system after the LS2 commissioning period and the activities in preparation for future data taking will be presented.

RPC background studies at CMS experiment

During Run2 the high instantaneous luminosity, up to 2.2 · 10 34 cm -2 s -1 , lead to a substantial hit rate in the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment’s muon chambers due to multiple background sources to physics processes sought for at LHC. In this article we will describe the analysis method devised to measure and identify the contributions to such background in the Resistive Plate Chambers. Thorough understanding of the background rates provides the base for the upgrade of the muon detectors for the High-Luminosity LHC.

RPC based tracking system at CERN GIF++ facility

With the HL-LHC upgrade of the LHC machine, an increase of the instantaneous luminosity by a factor of five is expected and the current detection systems need to be validated for such working conditions to ensure stable data taking. At the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++) many muon detectors undergo such studies, but the high gamma background can pose a challenge to the muon trigger system which is exposed to many fake hits from the gamma background. A tracking system using RPCs is implemented to clean the fake hits, taking profit of the high muon efficiency of these chambers. This work will present the tracking system configuration, used detector analysis algorithm and results.

Solar Thermochemical Carbon Dioxide Splitting Using Ceria and Iron Aluminate Foam Devices and Simulation of a Plant System for Demonstration

An international research project has been undertaken to integrate a unique solar thermal processing reactor system with ceria and iron aluminate as active redox materials for CO2 splitting. Experimental investigations for CO2 splitting were conducted using a solar simulator and tube furnace at Niigata University, followed by demonstrations using a high-flux solar furnace (HFSF) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO. Each experimental setup consisted of foam devices composed of reticulated porous ceramic (RPC). The RPC has a full ceria or iron aluminate body. It fabricated using the replica method and subjected to a two-step redox reaction, which iteratively separated a stream of CO2 into O2 and CO. Reactivity was evaluated using CO production per mass of the reactive material. The tubular furnace yielded a CO production of 6.41 mL/g at a reduction temperature of 1600degrees C, showcasing a higher CO production rate and total amount than those obtained from experiments conducted with solar simulators and solar furnace setups. For iron aluminate RPC, the productivity was measured as 3.57 mL/g using HFSF at a reduction temperature of 1450degrees C. These results are somewhat higher than those of the previous experiment at lower reduction temperatures of 1400degrees C-1500degrees C. Additionally, the production of CO in the case of ceria RPC was compared with the steady flow model simulation, which assumed chemical equilibrium at various levels of oxygen partial pressure during the reduction process. On the basis of these results, this study proposes a solar fuel system with an open receiver that uses a high-temperature heat transfer fluid.

SOX2-driven enhancer landscape defines the transcriptional architecture of retinogenesis

Retinal neurogenesis is mediated by the coordinated activities of a complex gene regulatory network (GRN) of transcription factors (TFs) in multipotent retinal progenitor cells (RPCs). How this GRN mechanistically guides neural competence remains poorly understood. In this study, we present integrated transcriptional, genetic and genomic analyses to uncover the regulatory mechanisms of SOX2, a key factor in establishing neural identity in RPCs. We show that SOX2 is preferentially enriched in the RPC-specific enhancer landscape associated with essential regulators of retinogenesis. Disruption of SOX2 expression impairs retinogenesis, marked by a selective loss of enhancer activity near genes essential for RPC proliferation and lineage specification. We identified the RPC transcription factor VSX2 as a binding partner for SOX2 and, together, SOX2 and VSX2 co-target a core, retina-specific chromatin repertoire characterized by enhanced TF binding and robust chromatin accessibility. This cooperative binding establishes a shared SOX2-VSX2 transcriptional code that promotes the expression of crucial regulators of neurogenesis while repressing the acquisition of alternative lineage cell fate. Our data illuminate fundamental biological insights on how transcription factors act in concert to drive chromatin-based genetic programs underlying retinal neural identity.

UPC++ v1.0 Programmer’s Guide (Rev. 2023.9.0)

UPC++ is a C++ library that supports Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming. It is designed for writing efficient, scalable parallel programs on distributed-memory parallel computers. The key communication facilities in UPC++ are one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). The UPC++ control model is single program, multiple-data (SPMD), with each separate constituent process having access to local memory as it would in C++. The PGAS memory model additionally provides one-sided RMA communication to a global address space, which is allocated in shared segments that are distributed over the processes. UPC++ also features Remote Procedure Call (RPC) communication, making it easy to move computation to operate on data that resides on remote processes. UPC++ was designed to support exascale high-performance computing, and the library interfaces and implementation are focused on maximizing scalability. In UPC++, all communication operations are syntactically explicit, which encourages programmers to consider the costs associated with communication and data movement. Moreover, all communication operations are asynchronous by default, encouraging programmers to seek opportunities for overlapping communication latencies with other useful work. UPC++ provides expressive and composable abstractions designed for efficiently managing aggressive use of asynchrony in programs. Together, these design principles are intended to enable programmers to write applications using UPC++ that perform well even on hundreds of thousands of cores.

Single crystal purification reduces trace impurities in halide perovskite precursors, alters perovskite thin film performance, and improves phase stability

Impurities present in commercially available halide perovskite precursors are known to affect photovoltaic performance. Here, we employ bulk single crystal growth of FAPbI 3 using solvent orthogonality induced crystallization (SONIC) to remove a broad set of extrinsic impurities from commercially available halide perovskite precursors, as verified by detailed chemical analysis. Following SONIC purification, FAPbI 3 films made from PbI 2 of originally low purity (99%) and high purity (99.99%) show improved phase purity and stability under light and heat relative to films made from raw precursors or precursors purified via retrograde powder crystallization (RPC) in 2-methoxyethanol, a method commonly utilized in recent reports of the highest-efficiency perovskite solar cells. In conclusion, single-crystal purification of precursors improves film stability under operational stressors, and the large enhancements in material purity provide a cleaner slate for improved isolation of compositional and additive effects on perovskite phase stability.

DoCeph: DPU-Offloaded Messaging in Ceph for Reduced Host CPU Utilization

Ceph is a widely used distributed object store, but its messenger layer imposes substantial CPU overhead on the host. To address this limitation, we propose DoCeph, a DPU-offloaded storage architecture for Ceph that disaggregates the system by offloading the communication-intensive messaging component to the DPU while retaining the storage backend on the host. The DPU efficiently manages communication, using lightweight RPC for metadata operations and DMA for data transfer. Moreover, DoCeph introduces a pipelining technique that overlaps data transmission with buffer preparation, mitigating hardware-imposed transfer size limitations. We implemented DoCeph on a Ceph cluster with NVIDIA BlueField-3 DPUs. Evaluation results indicate that DoCeph cuts host CPU usage by up to 92% while sustaining stable throughput and providing larger performance benefits for object writes over 1 MB.

UPC++ v1.0 Specification (Rev. 2023.9.0)

UPC++ is a C++ library providing classes and functions that support Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming. The key communication facilities in UPC++ are one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). All communication operations are syntactically explicit and default to non-blocking; asynchrony is managed through the use of futures, promises and continuation callbacks, enabling the programmer to construct a graph of operations to execute asynchronously as high-latency dependencies are satisfied. A global pointer abstraction provides system-wide addressability of shared memory, including host and accelerator memories. The parallelism model is primarily process-based, but the interface is thread-safe and designed to allow efficient and expressive use in multi-threaded applications. The interface is designed for extreme scalability throughout, and deliberately avoids design features that could inhibit scalability.

Design and commissioning of readout electronics for a $K$$^{0}_{L}$ and $μ$ detector at the Belle II experiment

The K-long and muon detector (KLM) constitutes the outer-most volume of the Belle II spectrometer at the interaction region of the SuperKEKB collider in Tsukuba, Japan. The KLM detector was partially upgraded since the Belle experiment by replacing many of its resistive-plate chambers with scintillators containing wavelength-shifting fibers and instrumenting it with silicon photomultipliers. Here, we describe the readout electronics, firmware, and software created to control and acquire data from the scintillators and resistive-plate chambers.
