Effect of flutter on theoretical bit error rates for digital recording systems.

Tape recorders employed to record and eventually reproduce digital data introduce errors into the data. It is desirable to understand the sources of these errors so that predictions may be made of the resultant error rate. While specific predictions are difficult to apply to whole classes of machines and their respective electronic systems, it is possible to make general predictions which give insight into the problems and processes involved. A heuristic viewpoint is developed for understanding the problems involved in machines and systems that now exist.

Voice-Recognition System Records Inspection Data

Main Injector Voice Activated Record (MIVAR) system acts on vocal commands and processes spoken inspection data into electronic and printed inspection reports. Devised to improve acquisition and recording of data from borescope inspections of interiors of liquid-oxygen-injecting tubes on main engine of Space Shuttle. With modifications, system used in other situations to relieve inspectors of manual recording of data. Enhances flow of work and quality of data acquired by enabling inspector to remain visually focused on workpiece.

Recording system for the solar neutron monitoring at Mt. Norikura

To monitor solar neutron events, a new recording system will be installed at Mt. Norikura Cosmic Ray Observatory. The recording system is composed of a pulse counter with clock and a microcomputer with minifloppy disk. The counter and the microcomputer are connected through the General Purpose Interface Bus line. The one minute total count of the neutron monitor is recorded on the minifloppy disk.

New data acquisition system records bearing measurements directly

Digital data acquisition system records steady state and dynamic data of bearing and shaft displacement. Elliptical orbits formed can be reconstructed and the data reduced automatically. System also reads pressures, temperatures, flows, and torque during any one data scan.

A portable telescope, photometer, and data-recording system

A description is presented of a portable telescope, two-channel photometer and high-speed data-recording system that meet the unique requirements of occultation astronomy. The instrumentation has been designed for portability, high time resolution, accurate absolute timing, and ease of use. The instrumentation includes a light-weight 35.5-cm (14-inch) objective portable telescope, a two-channel high-speed photometer and a data-recording system built into a suitcase. The equipment has been successfully used in field operations and at fixed observatories in India, Australia, and Hawaii.

Technical and investigative support for high density digital satellite recording systems

Methods and results of examinations and tests conducted on magnetic recording tapes under consideration for a high density digital (HDDR) satellite recording system are described. The examinations and tests investigate the performance of tapes with respect to their physical, magnetic and electrical characteristics. The objective of the tests, the likely significance of typical results, and the importance of the characteristics under investigation to the application are included. Theoretical discussions of measurement methods are provided where appropriate. Methods and results are discussed; the results of some sections are tabulated together to facilitate their comparison. The conclusion of each test section relates the test results to their possible significance and attempts to correlate the results of that section with the results of other tests. Some of the sections analyze sources of error inherent in the measurement methods or relate the value of the information obtained to the objectives of the test or the overall purpose of the project.

A portable, low-cost flight-data measurement and recording system

The design of and the experience with an inexpensive, hand-portable, onboard data system used to record four parameters in the final portion of the landing approach and touchdown of an airplane are described. The system utilized a high-quality audio tape recorder and amateur photographic equipment with accessory circuitry rather than specialized instrumentation to given satisfactory results.
