Rejuvenation of AgMg electron multipliers by outgassing and baking techniques
The paper investigates physical conditions which can give rise to thermonuclear runaways in the hydrogen envelopes of low-luminosity white dwarfs. Specifically, calculations are performed for white dwarfs of 0.5, 0.75, 1, and 1.25 solar masses with envelope masses in the range from 0.00001 to 0.001 solar mass and initial luminosities of 0.00001 to 0.01 times the solar value. It is found that envelope masses as low as 0.0001 solar mass are sufficient to initiate thermonuclear runaways on more massive white dwarfs with luminosities as low as about 0.001 the solar value. The runaway time scales under these conditions, typically of the order of a billion years, are comparable to the time scales for cooling of white dwarfs to these low luminosities. Since time-averaged accretion rates as low as a few times 10 to the -14th power solar mass per year are sufficient to reconstitute such envelopes, also on a time scale of several billion years, it is suggested that the association of novalike events with binary systems may not be unique. Accretion of interstellar matter onto isolated white dwarfs may, under some circumstances, be sufficient to rekindle and perhaps rejuvenate the dwarf. Such evolutionary behavior might define a new and distinct class of objects.
A performability-oriented conceptual framework for software rejuvenation has been constructed as a means of increasing levels of reliability and performance in distributed stateful computing. As used here, performability-oriented signifies that the construction of the framework is guided by the concept of analyzing the ability of a given computing system to deliver services with gracefully degradable performance. The framework is especially intended to support applications that involve stateful replicas of server computers.

With the complete success of Servicing Mission 4 (SM4) to the Hubble Space Telescope in May, 2009, the Observatory's capabilities are extremely broad and beyond anything it has previously been equipped with. I will present results on the important early science corning out of the telescope and discuss prospects for the future."
Following the extraordinarily successful Servicing Mission 4 (SM4) of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in May of 2009, the Observatory is now fully equipped with a broad array of powerful science instruments that put it at the pinnacle of its scientific power. Relevant to the subject matter of the Beyond 2010 Conference, HST will be well-placed over the next five-plus years to advance our knowledge of the formation of high-redshift galaxies and their growth with cosmic time; the emergence of structure in the early universe via Dark Matter-driven gravitational instability; and the universe's expansion history and any resulting implications for the temporal character of Dark Energy. These are fitting projects for the iconic facility now celebrating its 20th anniversary in orbit.
Recent drastic reduction of the older perennial sea ice in the Arctic Ocean has resulted in a vast expansion of younger and saltier seasonal sea ice. This increase in the salinity of the overall ice cover could impact tropospheric chemical processes. Springtime perennial ice extent in 2008 and 2009 broke the half-century record minimum in 2007 by about one million km2. In both years seasonal ice was dominant across the Beaufort Sea extending to the Amundsen Gulf, where significant field and satellite observations of sea ice, temperature, and atmospheric chemicals have been made. Measurements at the site of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Amundsen ice breaker in the Amundsen Gulf showed events of increased bromine monoxide (BrO), coupled with decreases of ozone (O3) and gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), during cold periods in March 2008. The timing of the main event of BrO, O3, and GEM changes was found to be consistent with BrO observed by satellites over an extensive area around the site. Furthermore, satellite sensors detected a doubling of atmospheric BrO in a vortex associated with a spiral rising air pattern. In spring 2009, excessive and widespread bromine explosions occurred in the same region while the regional air temperature was low and the extent of perennial ice was significantly reduced compared to the case in 2008. Using satellite observations together with a Rising-Air-Parcel model, we discover a topographic control on BrO distribution such that the Alaskan North Slope and the Canadian Shield region were exposed to elevated BrO, whereas the surrounding mountains isolated the Alaskan interior from bromine intrusion.
Four classes of lineation patterns have been identified on Europa in the area covered by high-resolution Voyager 2 images. These include dark, wedge-shaped bands in the west-central part of the area; triple bands associated with diagonally trending, global lineations; gray concentric curvilinear bands in the southeastern part; and ridges near the terminator. The major structures appear to have been formed by tidal forces centered on the axis pointing toward Jupiter, but variations in the detail of the structural patterns may have been caused by internal forces. The older strain patterns tend to be rejuvenated by younger fractures. The most persistent rejuvenated strain patterns are the global diagonal fractures, probably formed by conjugate shear, and the straight and curvilinear fractures that apparently caused an early dichotomy in fracture patterns.
Rejuvenating treatments demonstrated. Experiments with three alloys show some combinations of heat treatment, hot isostatic pressing, and/or surface treatment extends cycle lives of fatigue-damaged or fatigue-precracked specimens. For each alloy, tests were first done to determine "baseline" high-cycle-fatigue lives and high-cycle-fatigue failure modes over range of test conditions. Controlled fatigue damage introduced into specimens. Damaged specimens subjected to candidate rejuvenating treatments, then tested to failure. Effectiveness of each treatment judged by comparing fatigue data of damaged and treated specimens to "baseline" fatigue and data taken at same test conditions.
The relationship between morphology and surficial geology is used to quantify the denudation that has occurred across southwestern Africa sicne the fragmentation of Gondwana during the Early Mesozoic. Two main points emerge. Signficant denudation, of the order of kilometers, is widespread except in the Kalahari region of the continental interior. The denudation is systematically distributed so that the continental exterior catchment, draining directly to the Cape basin, is denuded to a greater depth than the interior catchment inland of the Great Escarpment. The analysis also implies tha the majority of the denudation occurred before the beginning of the Cenozoic for both teh exerior and interior catchments. Existing models of landscape development are reviewed, and implications of the denudation chronology are incorporated into a revised conceptual model. This revision implies tha thte primary effect of rifting on the subsequent landscape evolution is that it generates two distinct drainage regimes. A marginal upwarp, or rift flank uplift, separates rejuvenated rivers that drain into the subsiding rift from rivers in the continetal interior that are deflected but not rejuvenated. The two catchments evolve independently unless they are integrated by breaching of hte marginal upwarp. If this occurs, the exterior baselevel is communicated to the interior catchment that is denuded accordingly. Denudation rates generally decrease as the margin evolves, and this decrease is reinforced by the exposure of substrate that is resistant to denudation and/or a change to a more arid climate. The observations do not reveal a particular style of smaller-scale landscape evolution, sucha s escarpment retreat, that is responsible for the differential denudation across the region. It is proposed that numerical model experiments, which reflect the observational insights at the large scale, may identify the smaller-scale controls on escarpment development if the model and natural systems are analogous. Four numerical experiments are presented in which the roles of antecedent topography, resistant substrate, climte change, and lowering the baselevel of the interior catchment are investigated for an initially high elevation margin bordered by an escarpment. The model results suggest several styles of landscape evolution that are compatible with the observations. Escarpments may retreat in a regular manner, but they also degrade and are destroyed, only to reform at the drainage divide between exterior and interior catchments.
Loss of the command function of the Telstar satellite first occurred on Novemb 4, 1962. There had been earlier indications of degraded performance. Facts are presented which led to the conclusion that the malfunction of the command system was due to surface damage to certain transistors in the redundant command decoders by the enhanced radiation in the inner Van Allen belt. Correction steps have included laboratory experiments to gain a better understanding of the cause of failure, the use of continuous normal commands, commands transmitted from Johannesburg, South Africa, and specially modified commands to circumvent failure of the more vulnerable transistors. The operations which aided in the gradual rejuvenation of both command decoders are described. Also covered are the subsequent reappearance of the command system malfunction on February 21, 1963, and its correlation with the variation of the average radiation intensity seen by the satellite.
The main purpose of this program was to determine the life characteristics of nine space-qualified, metal-ceramic CO2 lasers. Lifetimes ranged between about 400 hours to over 2000 hours (the limit of testing) with a high degree of consistency in like groups. In all cases the tubes which had failed could be restored to near their original power by doubling the cathode current for 30 minutes. Periodic rejuvenation allowed operation for the full 2000 hours on all tubes. The failure mechanism appears to involve formation of NiO and C on the nickel cathode emission surface with subsequent absorption of tube gases.
Twenty-five cells were used in a five-year test to compare, after each successive one-year storage period, the discharge and charge characteristics of charged cells on open circuit versus that of cells on continuous trickle charge. The test procedure, instrumentation, and results are described. Based on the test results, the following recommendations were made: (1) If the user's purpose will allow a rejuvenation cycle or two after a long storage period, the open circuit regime will likely give slightly greater capacity. (2) If the user's purpose demands immediately available power following a long storage period, the trickle charge method of storage is definitely the regime to use.
Combined visual and digital techniques of analysing ERTS-1 data for geologic information have been tried on selected areas in Pennsylvania. The major physiolographic and structural provinces show up well. Supervised mapping, following the imaged expression of known geologic features on ERTS band 5 enlargements (1:250,000) of parts of eastern Pennsylvania, delimited the Diabase Sills and the Precambrian rocks of the Reading Prong with remarkable accuracy. From unsupervised mapping, transgressive linear features are apparent in unexpected density, and exhibit strong control over river valley and stream channel directions. They are unaffected by bedrock type, age, or primary structural boundaries, which suggests they are either rejuvenated basement joint directions on different scales, or they are a recently impressed structure possibly associated with a drifting North American plate. With ground mapping and underflight data, 6 scales of linear features have been recognized.
The discovery of a periodic variation in spoke activity in Saturn's rings from the analysis of Voyager images is reported. A Fourier power spectrum was computed using a data set generated by quantifying spoke activity observed on the morning (western) half of the rings in Voyager images spanning 5.5 days (about 12 Saturn rotations). A peak approximately 14 sigma above the noise in the frequency domain was found at a period of 621 + or - 22 min. Within the formal error, this value is consistent with the 639.4-min rotation period of Saturn's magnetic field. Maximum spoke activity is most likely to be observed on the morning half of the rings when a particular magnetic field sector coincides with this area. This magnetic sector contains the region which is aligned with local noon at the time of the emission of the SKR (Saturn kilometric radiation). These results suggest that the fundamental period of spoke variation is that of Saturn's magnetic field, and that spoke activity is associated with the region of the field which gives rise to the SKR. Passage of this region through Saturn's shadow may play a significant role in the creation and/or rejuvenation of spokes.
According to the original definition, symbiotic stars have combination spectra, in which the high-excitation emission lines regularly found in planetary nebulae are superposed on a low-temperature absorption spectrum. In connection with this investigation, the coexistence of a He II emission with the TiO absorption bands is also postulated. Attention is given to a summary of observed properties of symbiotics, binaries with a late-type giant component, possible models for the symbiotics, models with an accreting main-sequence star (Algol symbiotics), T Coronae borealis as a possible cataclysmic Algol-type symbiotic, binaries with rejuvenated degenerate dwarfs (novalike symbiotics), questions regarding the existence of PN symbiotics or subdwarfs unpowered by accretion, and related binary systems which are not symbiotics.
