Flows into de Sitter space from anisotropic initial conditions: An effective field theory approach

For decades, physicists have analyzed various versions of a “cosmic no-hair” conjecture, to understand under what conditions a spacetime that is initially spatially anisotropic and/or inhomogeneous will flow into an isotropic and homogeneous state. Wald’s theorem, in particular, established that homogeneous but anisotropic spacetimes, if filled with a positive cosmological constant plus additional matter sources that satisfy specific energy conditions, will necessarily flow toward an (isotropic) de Sitter state at late times. Here, in this paper, we study the flow of homogeneous but anisotropic spacetimes toward isotropic states under conditions more general than those to which Wald’s theorem applies. We construct an effective field theory (EFT) treatment for generic “single-clock” systems in anisotropic spacetimes—which are not limited to realizations compatible with scalar-field constructions—and identify fixed points in the resulting phase space. We identify regions of this phase space that flow to isotropic fixed points—including a de Sitter fixed point—even in the absence of a bare cosmological constant, and for matter sources that do not obey the energy conditions required for Wald’s theorem. Such flows into de Sitter reveal the emergence of an effective cosmological constant.

Tilted spatially nonflat inflation

Throughout this work, we construct nonlinear inflaton potential-energy densities that describe not necessarily very slowly rolling closed and open inflation models, and compute tilted primordial spatial inhomogeneity power spectra that follow from quantum-mechanical fluctuations during inflation in these models. Earlier nonflat inflation model power spectra computations assumed an inflaton potential-energy density with a linear slope that resulted in very slow roll during inflation and untilted power spectra. These new tilted power spectra differ from those that have previously been used to study cosmological data in nonflat cosmological models.

Fast and flexible neutrino decoupling. Part I. The Standard Model

Cosmological determinations of the number of relativistic neutrino species, N eff , are becoming increasingly accurate, and further improvements are expected both from CMB and BBN data. Given this context, we update the evaluation of N eff and the current entropy density via the momentum-averaged approach. This allows for a numerically fast description of neutrino decoupling, easily portable to an array of new physics scenarios. We revisit all aspects of this approach, including collision terms with full electron mass dependence, finite temperature QED corrections to the equation of state, neutrino oscillations, and the modelling of neutrino ensembles with effective chemical potentials. For integrated observables, our results differ by less than 0.04% from the solution of the momentum-dependent evolution equation. We outline how to extend the approach to BSM settings, and will highlight its power in Part II. To facilitate the practical implementation, we release a Mathematica and python code within nudec_BSM_v2, easily linkable to BBN codes.
