Low-temperature MnBi alloys: Electronic and magnetic properties, constitution, morphology and fabrication (Review article)

The article reviews the rich phenomena of physical properties of MnBi. The diverse phenomena include strong spin-orbit interaction, anomalous temperature dependence of the coercivity and the magneto-crystalline anisotropy field, unique magneto-optical properties. Issues addressed include the nature of the electronic ground states of MnBi, the electronic and magnetic structures, Fermi surface, magneto-crystalline anisotropy, x-ray magnetic dichroism. The discussion includes key experiments, such as optical and magneto-optical spectroscopic measurements, de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements, x-ray photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements as well as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The effect of the spin-orbit (SO) interaction and Coulomb repulsion U were found to be crucial for the Fermi surface, cyclotron masses, magneto-optical properties, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The microscopic origin of unique magneto-crystalline anisotropy and giant Kerr effect in MnBi is analyzed in detail. The huge Kerr effect in MnBi is caused by the combination of a sizable magnetic moment on manganese, the large spin-orbit coupling of bismuth, and a strong hybridization between the manganese 3d and the bismuth 6p states. The magneto-optically active states are mainly the 6p states of Bi. We show that the observed temperature dependence of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy can be explained taking into account the spin-orbit interaction together with strong Coulomb electron-electron interaction. The SO coupling of Bi is equally responsible for the large magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy as is the exchange splitting of Mn. The fabrication, morphology, and constitution of low-temperature MnBi alloys in bulk, thin films, and nanoparticles are discussed. The nanocomposite permanent magnetic materials based on MnBi, (Co, Fe) and Nd 2 Fe 14 B are also discussed.

Review Article: Crystal alignment for high performance organic electronics devices

Organic electronics devices based on high-performance small-molecule organic semiconductors have gained substantial attention because of their unique advantages such as excellent charge transport, solution processability, and environmental stability. However, the intrinsic crystallization of small-molecule organic semiconductors is anisotropic, resulting in significant device performance variations of organic electronics devices. In this article, the authors review the various approaches and techniques developed to control and align the crystallization of some benchmark solution-processable, high-performance, small-molecule organic semiconductors, such as 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene, N,N'-1H,1H-perfluorobutyl dicyanoperylenecarboxydiimide, and 5,11-bis(triethylgermylethynyl)anthradithiophene. These alignment approaches are studied in the context of capillary force-based techniques, patterning-based techniques, solution-shearing-based techniques, and other miscellaneous techniques, including zone-casting, vertical flowing, air flow navigation, temperature gradient alignment, etc. The organic semiconductors and crystal alignment techniques reviewed in this article shed light on important relationship among crystallization, charge transport, and device performance and can be applied to various high-performance organic electronics devices, such as organic thin film transistors and solar cells.

Imaging and Endovascular Treatment of Bleeding Pelvic Fractures: Review Article

Pelvic fractures are potentially life-threatening injuries with high mortality rates, mainly due to intractable pelvic arterial bleeding. However, concomitant injuries are frequent and may also be the cause of significant blood loss. As treatment varies depending on location and type of hemorrhage, timely imaging is of critical importance. Contrast-enhanced CT offers fast and detailed information on location and type of bleeding. Angiography with embolization for pelvic fracture hemorrhage, particularly when performed early, has shown high success rates as well as low complication rates and is currently accepted as the first method of bleeding control in pelvic fracture-related arterial hemorrhage. In the current review imaging workup, patient selection, technique, results and complications of pelvic embolization are described.

Recent progress in the durability of Fe-N-C oxygen reduction electrocatalysts for polymer electrolyte fuel cells

This mini-review article review focuses on the very recent advancements in the stability and durability under operating fuel cell conditions of Fe-N-C electrocatalysts oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. The most prominent degradation mechanisms of active site demetallation and carbon corrosion, both resulting in a relatively rapid initial performance loss, are introduced and elaborated on through recent published work, with emphasis on the role of H 2 O 2 radicals in these two likely catalysts degradation mechanisms. Here, the current state of Fe-N-C electrocatalysts is also discussed and several specific improvements are proposed as necessary to advance these materials towards a state of competitive stability and durability.

Dual-Polarization Radar Fingerprints of Precipitation Physics: A Review

This article reviews how precipitation microphysics processes are observed in dual-polarization radar observations. These so-called “fingerprints” of precipitation processes are observed as vertical gradients in radar observables. Fingerprints of rain processes are first reviewed, followed by processes involving snow and ice. Then, emerging research is introduced, which includes more quantitative analysis of these dual-polarization radar fingerprints to obtain microphysics model parameters and microphysical process rates. New results based on a detailed rain shaft bin microphysical model are presented, and we conclude with an outlook of potentially fruitful future research directions.

Should All Low-risk Patients Now Be Considered for TAVR? Operative Risk, Clinical, and Anatomic Considerations

Purpose of Review: This article reviews the current data on TAVR in low-risk patients with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis, highlights the results of the recently published Medtronic Low Risk Randomized Study and PARTNER 3 trials, and describes specific clinical, anatomic, and procedural considerations regarding the optimal treatment choice in this population. Recent Findings: In low-risk patients, the Medtronic Low Risk Randomized Study demonstrated TAVR to be non-inferior to surgery with respect to the composite endpoint of death or disabling stroke while PARTNER 3 trial proved TAVR to be superior to surgery with regard to the composite endpoint of death, stroke, or rehospitalization. Summary: Recent trials demonstrate the safety and efficacy of TAVR in low-risk patients and have led to an FDA indication for the use of TAVR in these patients. However, the lack of long-term data on the rate of transcatheter valve deterioration in the younger population, higher incidence of paravalvular leak and pacemaker implantation following TAVR, along with certain intrinsic anatomic factors remain potential challenges to generalize TAVR in all low surgical risk patients. We describe specific clinical, anatomic, and procedural considerations regarding the optimal treatment choice for low-risk patients with severe, symptomatic AS.

Next-Generation Cathode Materials for Non-aqueous Potassium-Ion Batteries

Potassium-ion batteries have recently attracted considerable attention as cost-effective alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage. However, a major obstacle to the practical application of this emerging technology is the lack of suitable cathode materials that are capable of delivering high gravimetric/volumetric energy, stable cycle life, and high rate capability. Here in this review article, we review the recent progress in cathodes development for potassium-ion batteries. These materials are categorized into four types: layered oxides, Prussian blue analogs, poly-anion, and organic compounds. Based on our critical review of the reported literature, we identify poly-anion compounds as a class of promising candidates among all types and provide suggestions for future optimization.

Recent Progress on Emerging Applications of Hydrochar

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a prominent thermochemical technology that can convert high-moisture waste into a valuable product (called hydrochar) at a relatively mild treatment condition (180–260 °C and 2–10 MPa). With rapidly growing research on HTC and hydrochar in recent years, review articles addressing the current and future direction of this research are scarce. Hence, this article aims to review various emerging applications of hydrochars, e.g., from solid fuel to soil amendment, from electron storage to hydrogen storage, from dye adsorption, toxin adsorption, heavy metal adsorption to nutrient recovery, and from carbon capture to carbon sequestration, etc. This article further provides an insight in the hydrochar’s working mechanism for various applications and how the applications can be improved through chemical modification of the hydrochar. Finally, new perspectives with appropriate recommendations have been made to further unveil potential applications and its improvement through hydrochar and its modified version.

Coal-derived carbon anodes for lithium-ion batteries: Development, challenges, and prospects

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) development has increased rapidly, requiring low-cost anode materials with a high capacity, high-rate performance, and stable lifespan. Carbon-based anodes possess various exceptional morphologies and structures, making them promising candidates for meeting the technical demands; however, conventional synthetic carbon anode processes need expensive feedstocks that increase anode cost and limit commercialization. Coal, the most affordable and abundant carbon resource, has attracted increasing attention as the primary feedstock for producing high-value carbon anode materials. This article reviews the lithium storage mechanisms, characteristics, and productions of some high-valuable carbon anode materials for LIBs from coal and coal derivatives. The high-value carbon anode materials reviewed in this article are graphite, graphene, mesophase microbeads (MCMB), carbon fiber, and hard carbons. Furthermore, the remaining challenges and prospects of using coal-derived carbon materials to create high-performance and low-cost lithium-ion batteries are also discussed.
