Online Control of Process Variance Using Feedback

For many stochastic control problem formulations, design objectives typically include constraining the covariance of the outputs of the system. Recent engineering challenges have demonstrated an interest in controlling system output covariances to a setpoint. However, open-loop control of system output covariance can be exceptionally challenging when the system has significant plant uncertainties. This paper explores closed-loop control of the system’s output covariance using a windowed variance function. The stochastic nature of the windowed variance feedback means that root locus and other classical control design techniques cannot be immediately used. Expected value analysis is used to generate transfer functions for the average response of such systems, and the results are used to design controllers. Stochastic simulations are presented to verify the analytical results and make other observations concerning closed-loop variance control.

Evaluation of nonlinear control performance of air handling units under variable operation conditions using root distribution approach

The control systems at Air handling units (AHUs) have nonlinear nature, resulting potentially in sluggish, aggressive, or oscillatory responses under variable operation conditions. This paper is to develop an approach for evaluating the nonlinear control performance of AHUs under variable operation conditions and for identifying the impact of varying multiple operation parameters which guides controller design. To do so, an operation parameter-based root distribution technique, intended to sketch the paths traced by closed-loop poles as multiple operation parameters are varied, is first introduced. The technique—which may be viewed as an extension of conventional, single-variable root locus—is then applied to a fan speed control system that includes a motor with a variable frequency drive and a supply fan with an air duct under variable fan speed and duct static pressure. Using the technique, the system’s stability region is graphically identified. The system is also found to be aggressive and gradually lose its stability as the fan speed decreases and the duct static pressure increases, which is validated by the field tests. Here, the root distribution approach is an effective tool to evaluate the performance of any nonlinear control systems at AHUs with multiple variable operation parameters without requiring time-domain simulations.

Frequency Response Improvement in a Standalone Small Hydropower Plant Using Battery Storage

This paper proposes a control architecture for frequency, current, and voltage control that facilitates using battery storage to improve the response of standalone small hydropower plants. The frequency controller uses rate-of-change of frequency and frequency-Watt-based generations to produce active power commands. The distinctive feature of the controller design is that it nicely integrates response to frequency change with constraints on frequency and state of battery to enable power injections. The current and voltage control scheme allows incorporating the frequency controller. The distinctive feature of this controller is that it incorporates a bounded integral control strategy that guarantees stability. Results on the stability of the hydropower plant with proposed scheme are presented and robust ways to choose the controller gains are investigated via root locus analysis. In conclusion, simulations performed show that: the hydropower plant response is significantly improved with battery storage using the proposed scheme; the load carrying capability of the hydropower plant is significantly improved with battery storage; the proposed scheme has the capability to recharge the battery; and the proposed control scheme gives improved performance.
