Mesospheric temperature and circulation response to the Hunga Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcanic eruption

The Hunga Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai (HTHH) volcanic eruption on 15 January 2022 injected water vapor and SO 2 into the stratosphere. Several months after the eruption, significantly stronger westerlies, and a weaker Brewer-Dobson circulation developed in the stratosphere of the Southern Hemisphere and were accompanied by unprecedented temperature anomalies in the stratosphere and mesosphere. In August 2022, the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) satellite instrument observed record-breaking temperature anomalies in the stratosphere and mesosphere that alternate signs with altitude. Ensemble simulations carried out with the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM6) indicate that the strengthening of the stratospheric westerlies explains the mesospheric temperature changes. The stronger westerlies cause stronger westward gravity wave drag in the mesosphere. Although the enhanced gravity wave drag is partly balanced by a weakening of planetary wave forcing, the net result is an acceleration of the mesospheric mean meridional circulation. The stronger mesospheric circulation, in turn, plays a dominant role in driving the changes in mesospheric temperatures. This study highlights the impact of large volcanic eruptions on middle atmospheric dynamics and provides insight into their long-term effects in the mesosphere. On the other hand, we could not discern a clear mechanism for the observed changes in stratospheric circulation. In fact, an examination of the WACCM ensemble reveals that not every member reproduces the large changes observed by SABER. We conclude that there is a stochastic component to the stratospheric response to the HTHH eruption.

Part 1: Nuclear Mis- and Disinformation and Impacts to the American Public

Russia’s nuclear saber rattling throughout the war in Ukraine, reports of China’s increasing nuclear modernization, and the 2023 release of Oppenheimer has reignited in the public talk of nuclear weapons. With the increasing prevalence of conversation around nuclear weapons comes increasing opportunity for mis- or disinformation to spread about them and the nuclear enterprise (NE). Mis- and disinformation are not new phenomena. However, the speed and reach offered by current digital communications technology is novel. What are the impacts of misinformation or disinformation about nuclear weapons to the American public?

Neutron Imaging of Al6061 Prepared by Solid-State Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing

Solid-state Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing has recently gained attention as a result of its capacity to fabricate large-scale parts while preserving the mechanical properties of the feedstock material. However, the correlation between the quality of layer-by-layer bonding of the deposited metal and processing parameters has remained unknown. Neutron imaging techniques, with 90% total transmission per cm, are employed for Al6061 parts fabricated by MELD ® Technology as a non-destructive evaluation approach for the first time to investigate the layer-by-layer structure of a stadium-shaped ingot in different sections. The post-processed results show the fabricated parts with an optimized set of processing parameters are void-free. However, the hydrocarbon-based feedstock lubricant segregates between the layers, which consequently may lead to non-uniform weaker mechanical properties along the build direction and stimulate crack initiation during mechanical loading. The tensile test results show 14% lower strain-to-failure values in alleged contaminated areas in transmission imaging results. Additionally, layer bonding is significantly impacted by hot-on-hot and hot-on-cold layer deposition schemes, especially for larger layer thicknesses.

Photodriven Elimination of Chlorine From Germanium and Platinum in a Dinuclear Pt II →Ge IV Complex

Abstract Searching for a connection between the two‐electron redox behavior of Group‐14 elements and their possible use as platforms for the photoreductive elimination of chlorine, we have studied the photochemistry of [( o ‐(Ph 2 P)C 6 H 4 ) 2 Ge IV Cl 2 ]Pt II Cl 2 and [( o ‐(Ph 2 P)C 6 H 4 ) 2 ClGe III ]Pt III Cl 3 , two newly isolated isomeric complexes. These studies show that, in the presence of a chlorine trap, both isomers convert cleanly into the platinum germyl complex [( o ‐(Ph 2 P)C 6 H 4 ) 2 ClGe III ]Pt I Cl with quantum yields of 1.7 % and 3.2 % for the Ge IV –Pt II and Ge III –Pt III isomers, respectively. Conversion of the Ge IV –Pt II isomer into the platinum germyl complex is a rare example of a light‐induced transition‐metal/main‐group‐element bond‐forming process. Finally, transient‐absorption‐spectroscopy studies carried out on the Ge III –Pt III isomer point to a ligand arene–Cl . charge‐transfer complex as an intermediate.

Catching Fullerenes: Synthesis of Molecular Nanogloves

Abstract Herein, we report the synthesis of a new series of rigid, all meta ‐phenylene, conjugated deep‐cavity molecules, displaying high binding affinity towards buckyballs. A facile synthetic approach with an overall combined yield of approximately 53% in the last two steps has been developed using a templating strategy that combines the general structure of resorcin[4]arene and [12]cyclo‐ meta ‐phenylene. These two moieties are covalently linked via four acetal bonds, resulting in a glove‐like architecture. 1 H NMR titration experiments reveal fullerene binding affinities ( K a ) exceeding ≥10 6 M −1 . The size complementarity between fullerenes and these scaffolds maximizes CH⋯π and π⋯π interactions, and their host:guest adduct resembles a ball in a glove, hence their name as nanogloves. Fullerene recognition is tested by suspending carbon soot in a solution of nanoglove in 1,1,2,2‐tetrachloroethane, where more than a dozen fullerenes are observed, ranging from C 60 to C 96 .

A comprehensive review of solar only and hybrid solar driven multigeneration systems: Classifications, benefits, design and prospective

Depending on the application and demands, different products can be generated utilizing multigeneration systems. To drive such systems, solar energy can be used as a primary energy source or in hybridization with other renewable or nonrenewable energy sources. Solar driven multigeneration systems are appealing due to the broad availability of solar energy and related technologies. Here, the objective of this study is to review, categorize and discuss different configurations, benefits, potentials, challenges, future research directions and market perspectives of solar energy-driven multigeneration systems, comprehensively. This study also reviews how solar energy systems can be used to hybridize systems for multigeneration purposes. Regardless of using fossil fuel backup sources, these systems are classified as (1) solar only-driven and (2) hybrid solar-driven, in which solar energy is used together with other renewable sources. Reviewing the literature demonstrates numerous ways to build solar energy-driven multigeneration systems by coupling a variety of different cycles and devices. Such systems offer multiple benefits such as enhancing the efficiency, reducing capital and operating costs and carbon dioxide emission. Hybridizing solar with other renewable energies enables continuous operation and dispatchability management. This review shows that for configuration selection and design, different thermodynamics, economic and environmental aspects should be considered. To advance the solar driven multigeneration systems development, further multidisciplinary research on different aspects of such systems is necessary. Particularly, investigations should focus on building different prototypes and on conducting experimental assessments. Also, new incentives and long-term purchase agreements for the products must be established.

Potentiometric entropy and operando calorimetric measurements reveal fast charging mechanisms in PNb 9 O 25

The Wadsley–Roth compound PNb 9 O 25 is a promising fast charging lithium ion battery anode material with high operating voltage to prevent solid electrolyte interface formation. Here, in this work, we present potentiometric entropy measurements featuring signatures of semiconductor-to-metal transition and intralayer ordering upon lithiation in the anode material PNb 9 O 25 that could not be observed with in situ X-ray diffraction. In addition, the instantaneous heat generation rates at the PNb 9 O 25 working electrode and at the lithium metal counter electrode during galvanostatic cycling were measured individually for the first time by operando isothermal calorimetry. The heat generation rate decreased at the PNb 9 O 25 electrode upon lithiation due to the decrease in electrical resistivity caused by the semiconductor-to-metal transition observed in potentiometric entropy measurements. Furthermore, the heat generation rate at the lithium metal electrode was positive during delithiation due to the exothermic plating of Li + ions on the lithium metal counter electrode associated with dendrite formation. Furthermore, calorimetric measurements established that the entropy change dominated the reversible heat generation rate at each electrode. Finally, the contribution of enthalpy of mixing was relatively small even at high C-rates thanks to the high Li + ion mobility in PNb 9 O 25 confirming its promises as a fast charging anode material.

Development of high concentration photovoltaics (HCPV) power plants in the US Southwest: Economic assessment and sensitivity analysis

High concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) technologies offer several advantages over typical PV systems. In this study, a detailed economic assessment and sensitivity analysis of deploying HCPV plants in the US southwest is performed. To do this, a 20 MWdc HCPV power plant is designed using the System Advisor Model (SAM) and is evaluated from both technical and financial aspects. The sensitivity analysis shows that reducing the installed cost per capacity of the HCPV system can significantly improve the economics and reduce the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) and levelized power purchase agreement (LPPA). Also, providing proper incentives including both investment tax credits (ITC) and production tax credit (PTC), loan debt ratio, and interest rate are among the most influential parameters. The analysis shows that with the 30% ITC, the LCOE, and LPPA of the designed HCPV projects are between $65.4/MWh and $69.3/MWh and between $71.0/MWh and $75.2/MWh, respectively. The estimated LCOE and LPPA values are almost 50% higher than the utility-scale PV projects. If proper funding is provided to continue the support of the HCPV system, they would become more economical and competitive with PV plants. Federal and state government policies must also be established to advocate HCPV systems.

Techno-economic analysis and environmental benefits of solar industrial process heating based on parabolic trough collectors

In this work, detailed techno-economic and environmental analyses are conducted for employing a 5 MWt parabolic trough-based solar industrial process heat (SIPH) plant in Salt Lake City, Utah. According to the results, an optimum solar multiple of 1.5 was determined, allowing the plant to generate annual thermal energy of 15389.24 MWth with a capacity factor of 35.1% and levelized cost of heat (LCOH) of $\$ 26.3$/MWth. Considering a 30% investment tax credit and a 30% reduction in the total installed cost could reduce the LCOH to $\$ 19.30$/MWth and $\$ 18.52$/MWth, respectively. Employing parabolic trough collectors could avoid emissions of 3,582,422.47 kg, 147.99 kg, 3,341.66 kg, and 14.32 kg for CO 2 , PM, NOx, and SO 2 , respectively per year compared to a natural gas-based plant. Further, it also caused an annual external cost savings of between $\$ 99,900$ and $\$ 357,004$. Including the external costs in the LCOH analysis shows that the SIPH plant is economically competitive with a natural gas-based plant, further demonstrating its value. A further comparison demonstrated the economic superiority of a parabolic trough-driven IPH plant over a photovoltaic-driven electric boiler plant. In summary, with reducing installed costs and providing incentives, parabolic trough-driven IPH plants will be an economically and environmentally viable option.

Metformin attenuates expression of angiogenic and inflammatory genes in human endometriotic stromal cells

Highlights: • Metformin reduced cell migration, and proliferation of endometriotic stromal cells. • Metformin attenuated the expression of angiogenic and inflammatory genes in human endometriotic stromal cells. • Metformin could be used as an effective adjuvant in endometriosis treatment. Endometriosis is a benign gynecological disease that is manifested by the presence and growth of endometrial cells and glands outside the uterine. Active angiogenesis, migration, and invasion of endometrial tissue outside the uterine are critical for the development of endometriosis and lead to the survival and growth of endometriotic lesions. Metformin, as an anti-diabetic agent, represents anti-angiogenic property. Here, we performed a study using human normal endometrial stromal cells (N-ESCs) from healthy endometrial tissue and human eutopic endometrial stromal cells (EU-ESCs) and ectopic endometrial stromal cells (ECT-ESCs) from endometriosis patients. ESCs were cultured and treated with different concentrations of Metformin (0–20 mmol/l) for 72 h to evaluate Metformin effect on cell viability, proliferation, migration was measured by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay and scratch test respectively as well as expression of angiogenesis and migration markers. The Metformin reduced cell migration, and proliferation of endometriotic stromal cells in a time and concentration dependently manner. Furthermore, Metformin attenuated the expression of angiogenic and inflammatory genes in human endometriotic stromal cells. The direct anti-proliferative effect on ECT-ESCs combined with the effects of Metformin on inflammatory and angiogenesis-related genes expression supports its therapeutic potential for endometriosis. Metformin could be used as an effective adjuvant in endometriosis treatment.
