Design and simulation of n -type solar cells based on an iodine-doped CdTe absorber using SCAPS-1D

The performance of conventional p-type CdTe solar cells has plateaued in recent years, motivating exploration of n-type absorbers. Here, we evaluate a homojunction solar cell employing iodine-doped CdTe (CdTe:I) as the absorber in a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/p-CdTe:As/n-CdTe:I/indium structure through SCAPS-1D simulations and prototype devices. Optimized simulations predict efficiencies above 25% for thin CdTe:I absorbers (~0.7 μm). In contrast, the first prototype achieved only ~1.36% efficiency with V OC = 0.48 V, J SC = 6.45 mA/cm 2 and FF = 43.8%. When the simulation is adjusted to match the actual device structure, and the effective illumination is reduced to account for front-side light loss, the predicted V OC (0.48 V) and JSC (6.74 mA/cm 2 ) closely reproduce the experimental values. This suggests that the device performance is primarily limited by reduced front-side photon transmission and other material non-idealities. These results highlight the promise of iodine-doped n-type CdTe and identify clear pathways for further efficiency improvement.

Degradation behavior of CIGS solar Cells: A parametric analysis

A parametric study of the effect of bulk and interface properties on device characteristics as a function of heat and light stress under open-circuit and short-circuit conditions is developed for Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 solar cells using SCAPS-1D simulator. The variables and interdependencies modeled include: (1) conduction band offset (CBO) between buffer and absorber; (2) buffer ionized donor density; (3) CIGS shallow acceptor density; (4) CIGS deep acceptor density; (5) CIGS shallow donor density; (6) ionized acceptor concentration in the ordered vacancy compound (OVC) CIGS/buffer interface; and (7) back contact work-function. An increase in absorber shallow acceptor or a decrease in shallow donor density results in an increase in net carrier density and open-circuit voltage (V OC ). Further, a decrease in V OC is observed with an increase in the deep acceptors or neutral midgap defects in the CIGS due to higher charge carrier recombination. A change of CBO from spike to cliff condition is a dominant mechanism of decreasing VOC with an interface defect density of 10 12 cm -2 . The minimum depletion width is found to be specifically sensitive to CBO and interface defect density. An inflection in the capacitance–voltage curves (in reverse bias) is observed with simultaneous increase in bulk deep acceptor density and shallow donor density near the back contact.

Top Stack Optimization for Cu 2 BaSn(S, Se) 4 Photovoltaic Cell Leads to Improved Device Power Conversion Efficiency beyond 6%

Earth-abundant and air-stable Cu 2 BaSnS 4-x Se x (CBTSSe) and related thin-film absorbers are regarded as prospective options to meet the increasing demand for low-cost solar cell deployment. Devices based on vacuum-deposited CBTSSe absorbers have achieved record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.2 % based on a conventional device structure using CdS buffer and i-ZnO/ITO window layers, with open-circuit voltage (V OC ) posing the major bottleneck for improving solar cell performance. The current study demonstrates a >20 % improvement in V OC (from 0.62 V to 0.75 V) and corresponding enhancement in PCE (from 5.1 % to 6.2 % without anti-reflection coating; to 6.5 % with MgF 2 anti-reflection coating) for solution-deposited CBTSSe solar cells. This performance improvement is realized by introducing an alternative successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR)-deposited Zn 1-x Cd x S buffer combined with sputtered Zn 1-x Mg x O/Al-doped ZnO window/top contact layer, which offer lower electron affinities relative to the conventional CdS/i-ZnO/ITO stack and better matching with the low electron affinity of CBTSSe. A combined experimental (temperature- and light intensity-dependent V OC measurements) and device simulation (SCAPS-1D) evaluation points to the importance of addressing relative band offsets for both the buffer and window layers relative to the absorber in mitigating interfacial recombination and optimizing CBTSSe solar cell performance.

The influence of ambient light spectrum (LED, INC, CFL, Xenon…) on the efficiency of perovskite indoor photovoltaic solar cells for Internet of Things (IoT) applications

This record provides a numerical investigation of a MAGeI₃-based perovskite solar cell with the structure FTO/TiO₂/MAGeI₃/Spiro-OMeTAD, evaluated for both outdoor and indoor light-harvesting applications using the SCAPS-1D simulator. Device performance is analyzed under AM 1.5G sunlight and several artificial light sources, including LED, incandescent, compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), flashlight, and xenon illumination. The study reports initial and optimized power conversion efficiencies and examines the influence of absorber layer thickness and bandgap on device performance under different lighting conditions. The results highlight the potential of MAGeI₃-based perovskite solar cells for indoor energy harvesting and low-power Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
