I Can’t Read All That! Improving the Usability of Semantic Models Using Concise, Ontology-Agnostic, Building-Specific Schemas

Semantic ontologies have enabled the creation of formalized, machine-readable descriptions of heterogenous building systems by providing dictionaries of well defined concepts that can be applied to model them. Within a semantic model of a particular building, a subset of an ontology's concepts may be applied in different ways to represent a particular perspective of the building's systems. How the concepts were applied can only be understood by examining the large amount of instance data within a semantic model, which leads to usability challenges. We propose a concise, ontology-agnostic method for defining building-specific schema (b-schema) graphs that summarize the structure and content of a semantic model. This approach provides a queryable and concise representation of the model's contents, separate from the instance data within a model, that can mitigate the challenges posed by the size and complexity of semantic models in processes such as visualization, querying, validation, and the use of large language models (LLMs). We validate our approach on semantic models based on the Brick and ASHRAE S223 ontologies. Results demonstrate that b-schemas significantly reduce the complexity of visual interpretation, accelerate SPARQL queries and SHACL validation, and improve LLM-based knowledge graph question answering.

Model Assessment Wizard (MAW)

SAND2026-18710O The Model Assessment Wizard (MAW) is a tool for evaluating ontologies and provides users with a comprehensive workbench for analysis. MAW features sub-modules for visualization, alignment, Shapes Constraint Language (SHACL) and Web Ontology Language (OWL) constraints, and simplification. Users can upload data, identify missing information, visualize ontologies, and update constraints. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

SeeQ: A Programming Model for Portable Data-Driven Building Applications

This paper introduces SeeQ, a programming model and an abstraction framework that facilitates the development of portable data- driven building applications. Data-driven approaches can provide insights into building operations and guide decision-making to achieve operational objectives. Yet the configuration of such applications per building requires extensive effort and tacit knowledge. In SeeQ, we propose a portable programming model and build a software system that enables self-configuration and execution across diverse buildings. The configuration of each building is captured in a unified data model - in this paper, we work with the Brick ontology without loss of generality. SeeQ focuses on the distinction between the application logic and the configuration of an application against building-specific data inputs and systems. We test the proposed approach by configuring and deploying a diverse range of applications across five heterogeneous real-world buildings. The analysis shows the potential of SeeQ to significantly reduce the efforts associated with the delivery of building analytics.
