The realization of arithmetic processors for delta modulation encoded signals

The design and realization of digital devices which add or multiply delta modulation (DM) encoded signals are presented. These systems operate directly on the DM bit stream. It is shown that the devices can be constructed using standard digital hardware and that the hardware complexity needed to add or multiply the two DM encoded signals is equivalent to that needed for pulse code modulation (PCM) signals. Experimental results are presented showing the operation of these systems. The results obtained by adding or multiplying DM encoded signals are compared with those obtained using PCM encoded signals on the basis of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A spectral-analysis technique applicable to a DM encoded signal is developed to obtain SNR curves.

Applications of satellite technology for regional organizations (Project ASTRO)

The direct arithmetic processing of adaptive delta modulation (ADM) encoded signals, conversion from ADM encoded signals to pulse code modulation (PCM) encoded signals, and conversion from PCM to ADM encoded signals are discussed. It is shown that signals which are ADM encoded can be arithmetically processed directly, without first decoding. Operating on the DM bit stream, and employing only standard digital hardware, the sum, difference and product can be obtained in PCM and ADM format.

On the detection of differentially encoded polyphase signals.

Discussion of the transmission and detection of differentially encoded polyphase signals and of the ambiguity resolution problem which results from suppression of the transmitted carrier. In particular, an analysis is made of the performance of differentially encoded coherent multiple phase-shift keyed (MPSK) systems which reconstruct coherent reference signals by means of generalized Costas or nth-power loops. The performance of such systems is then compared with that of ideal reception of MPSK signals and differentially coherent detection of differentially encoded MPSK signals. Emphasis is placed upon the special cases of quadriphase and octaphase signaling.

On the detection of differentially encoded polyphase signals.

Consideration of the transmission and detection of differentially encoded multiple phase-shift-keyed (MPSK) signals, paying particular attention to the ambiguity resolution problem resulting from suppression of the transmitted carrier. A study is made of the coherent detection of differentially encoded MPSK signals, and the performance of a differentially encoded MPSK system is compared with that of a system which transmits absolutely encoded polyphase signals and performs perfect ambiguity resolution. Both the perfect and noisy reference signal cases are treated. Also, the performance of coherent detection of differentially encoded MPSK signals is compared with that of differentially coherent reception of the same signal set.

The effect of interference on delta modulation encoded video signals

An adaptive delta modulator which encodes composite color video signals was shown to provide a good response when operating at 16 Mb/s and near-commercial quality at 23Mb/s. The ADM was relatively immune to channel errors. The system design is discussed and circuit diagrams are included.

The effect of interference on delta modulation encoded video signals

The results of a study on the use of the delta modulator as a digital encoder of television signals are presented. The computer simulation was studied of different delta modulators in order to find a satisfactory delta modulator. After finding a suitable delta modulator algorithm via computer simulation, the results are analyzed and then implemented in hardware to study the ability to encode real time motion pictures from an NTSC format television camera. The effects were investigated of channel errors on the delta modulated video signal and several error correction algorithms were tested via computer simulation. A very high speed delta modulator was built (out of ECL logic), incorporating the most promising of the correction schemes, so that it could be tested on real time motion pictures. The final area of investigation concerned itself with finding delta modulators which could achieve significant bandwidth reduction without regard to complexity or speed. The first such scheme to be investigated was a real time frame to frame encoding scheme which required the assembly of fourteen, 131,000 bit long shift registers as well as a high speed delta modulator. The other schemes involved two dimensional delta modulator algorithms.

Digital servo controller

A system, for generating a signal to control the rotation of a shaft supporting an antenna so that the antenna is rotated the shortest angular distance from a present angular position to a new desired angular position, was described. The system comprises a shaft encoder which generates a digital encoder signal indicating the present position of the shaft. A command signal is compared with the encoder signal to produce an analog signal for rotating the antenna. An error signal is produced for controlling the direction of rotation of the antenna.

Block encoding bosons by signal processing

Block Encoding (BE) is a crucial subroutine in many modern quantum algorithms, including those with near-optimal scaling for simulating quantum many-body systems, which often rely on Quantum Signal Processing (QSP). Currently, the primary methods for constructing BEs are the Linear Combination of Unitaries (LCU) and the sparse oracle approach. In this work, we demonstrate that QSP-based techniques, such as Quantum Singular Value Transformation (QSVT) and Quantum Eigenvalue Transformation for Unitary Matrices (QETU), can themselves be efficiently utilized for BE implementation. Specifically, we present several examples of using QSVT and QETU algorithms, along with their combinations, to block encode Hamiltonians for lattice bosons, an essential ingredient in simulations of high-energy physics. We also introduce a straightforward approach to BE based on the exact implementation of Linear Operators Via Exponentiation and LCU (LOVE-LCU). We find that, while using QSVT for BE results in the best asymptotic gate count scaling with the number of qubits per site, LOVE-LCU outperforms all other methods for operators acting on up to qubits, highlighting the importance of concrete circuit constructions over mere comparisons of asymptotic scalings. Using LOVE-LCU to implement the BE, we simulate the time evolution of single-site and two-site systems in the lattice theory using the Generalized QSP algorithm and compare the gate counts to those required for Trotter simulation.

Fiber optic sensors for military, industrial and commercial applications

Four examples of specific fiber optic sensor system designs, each of which demonstrates a different optical modulation format, are described. The birefrigent temperature transducer illustrates direct digital signal modulation. The temperature/pressure dependent semiconductor filter illustrates high-pass optical wavelength signal encoding. The coupled polarized-mode transducer shows how a solid-state sensor can produce narrow-bandpass optical wavelength signal encoding. The luminescent temperature sensor illustrates a way to construct a solid state sensor in order to produce pulse width modulation of an optical signal.

Mars 2020 Entry, Descent, and Landing as Observed by Radio Science Techniques at UHF and X-band Frequencies

On February 18, 2021, NASA’s Mars 2020 Rover “Perseverance” conducted the Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) sequence to land safely on the surface of Mars at Jezero Crater. Due to the criticality of the EDL sequence, redundant telecommunications strategies were utilized to observe the event. The rover transmitted an X-band (8.4 GHz) signal encoded with Multiple Frequency Shift Keying tones direct-to-Earth and a UHF (401.5 MHz) signal with 8 kbps encoded telemetry to orbiters, which relayed the signal back to Earth at X-band. NASA’s Deep Space Network complexes at Goldstone, California and Madrid, Spain received the direct-to-Earth X-band signal. Two of the largest steerable radio telescopes in the world, the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia and the Effelsberg 100-meter Radio Telescope in Germany also received the UHF carrier signal on Earth. During the EDL event, full spectrum recordings of the UHF and X-band signals were captured at these observatories using open-loop receivers. Real-time and post-processing signal analysis to determine power level, received frequency, and Doppler shift allowed determination of the spacecraft’s health and safety state during critical sequences, including event detection such as atmospheric entry, plasma blackouts, and parachute deployment. Simultaneous observations of the UHF and X-band radio links allow for redundancy in the event of a fault and greatly improve confidence in Doppler event detection.

Double Differential Encoding And Detection In MPSK

Proposed communication system based on multiple-phase-shift-keying (MPSK) modulation includes double differential encoder in transmitter and double differential detector in receiver. Transmitter generates phase-modulated signal suitable for decoding and detection by subsystem. Detector removes Doppler-frequency component from noisy, Doppler-shifted signal encoded in subsystem. Overall effect of double-differential scheme to cancel effect of Doppler shift on modulation in received signal. Not necessary to estimate Doppler shift to correct for it.

Quantile Vocoder

Parameters of spectral envelope obtained statistically. Algorithm for digital compression of speech signals encodes power spectral density of each short interval of speech by use of quantiles or order statistics. Purpose to reduce bit rate and bandwidth required for transmission. When fully developed, quantile vocoder - speech-encoding system based on new algorithm - expected moderately complicated compared with other speech-encoding systems and reproduce high-quality speech from code transmitted at relatively low bit rates. Speech signal treated mathematically as though amplitude spectrum stationary during short coding intervals, called "windows". Window duration of 20 or 35 ms, chosen as compromise between frequency resolution and time resolution. During each window, short-time amplitude and power spectra found by sampling at high rate (typically 10 kHz) and taking fast Fourier transforms (FFT's).

Synchronization trigger control system for flow visualization

The use of cinematography or holographic interferometry for dynamic flow visualization in an internal combustion engine requires a control device that globally synchronizes camera and light source timing at a predefined shaft encoder angle. The device is capable of 0.35 deg resolution for rotational speeds of up to 73 240 rpm. This was achieved by implementing the shaft encoder signal addressed look-up table (LUT) and appropriate latches. The developed digital signal processing technique achieves 25 nsec of high speed triggering angle detection by using direct parallel bit comparison of the shaft encoder digital code with a simulated angle reference code, instead of using angle value comparison which involves more complicated computation steps. In order to establish synchronization to an AC reference signal whose magnitude is variant with the rotating speed, a dynamic peak followup synchronization technique has been devised. This method scrutinizes the reference signal and provides the right timing within 40 nsec. Two application examples are described.

Non-parametric PCM to ADM conversion

An all-digital technique to convert pulse code modulated (PCM) signals into adaptive delta modulation (ADM) format is presented. The converter developed is shown to be independent of the statistical parameters of the encoded signal and can be constructed with only standard digital hardware. The structure of the converter is simple enough to be fabricated on a large scale integrated circuit where the advantages of reliability and cost can be optimized. A concise evaluation of this PCM to ADM translation technique is presented and several converters are simulated on a digital computer. A family of performance curves is given which displays the signal-to-noise ratio for sinusoidal test signals subjected to the conversion process, as a function of input signal power for several ratios of ADM rate to Nyquist rate.

Information efficiency in visual communication

This paper evaluates the quantization process in the context of the end-to-end performance of the visual-communication channel. Results show that the trade-off between data transmission and visual quality revolves around the information in the acquired signal, not around its energy. Improved information efficiency is gained by frequency dependent quantization that maintains the information capacity of the channel and reduces the entropy of the encoded signal. Restorations with energy bit-allocation lose both in sharpness and clarity relative to restorations with information bit-allocation. Thus, quantization with information bit-allocation is preferred for high information efficiency and visual quality in optimized visual communication.
