High-resolution Bayesian spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) quasi-3-D Vs model of Utah FORGE site with a dense geophone array

SUMMARY We expand the application of spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) from typical 1-D Vs profiles to quasi-3-D imaging via Bayesian Monte Carlo inversion (BMCI) using a dense nodal array (49 nodes) located at the Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) site. Combinations of 4 and 9 geophones in subarrays provide for 36 and 25 1-D Vs profiles, respectively. Profiles with error bars are determined by calculating coherency functions that fit observations in a frequency range of 0.2–5 Hz. Thus, a high-resolution quasi-3-D Vs model from the surface to 2.0 km depth is derived and shows that surface-parallel sedimentary strata deepen to the west, consistent with a 3-D seismic reflection survey. Moreover, the resulting Vs profile is consistent with a Vs profile derived from distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data located in a borehole at the FORGE site. The quasi-3-D velocity model shows that the base of the basin dips ∼22° to the west and topography on the basement interface coincident with the Mag Lee Wash suggests that the bedrock interface is an unconformity.

Degradation of Adsorbed Bisphenol A by Soluble Mn(III)

Bisphenol A (BPA), a high production volume chemical and potential endocrine disruptor, is found to be associated with sediments and soils due to its hydrophobicity (log K OW of 3.42). Here, we used superfine powdered activated carbon (SPAC) with a particle size of 1.38 ± 0.03 μm as a BPA sorbent and assessed degradation of BPA by oxidized manganese (Mn) species. SPAC strongly sorbed BPA, and desorption required organic solvents. No degradation of adsorbed BPA (278.7 ± 0.6 mg BPA g –1 SPAC) was observed with synthetic, solid α-MnO 2 with a particle size of 15.41 ± 1.35 μm; however, 89% mass reduction occurred following the addition of 0.5 mM soluble Mn(III). Small-angle neutron scattering data suggested that both adsorption and degradation of BPA occurred in SPAC pores. The findings demonstrate that Mn(III) mediates oxidative transformation of dissolved and adsorbed BPA, the latter observation challenging the paradigm that contaminant desorption and diffusion out of pore structures are required steps for degradation. Soluble Mn(III) is abundant near oxic-anoxic interfaces, and the observation that adsorbed BPA is susceptible to degradation has implications for predicting, and possibly managing, the fate and longevity of BPA in environmental systems.

Utah FORGE: Seismic Velocity Models, February 2021

This dataset contains a map, showing the Utah FORGE seismic stations, and seismic velocity model data. There are 61 1-D velocity models which are in a compressed TAR file. A paper is referenced at the end of this description which discusses the use of these data in 3D modelling. The paper summary follows: We expand the application of spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) from typical 1-D Vs profiles to quasi-3-D imaging via Bayesian Monte Carlo inversion (BMCI) using a dense nodal array (49 nodes) located at the Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) site. COVID-19 Impact on Prison Population and Flow Dynamics

The goal of this project was to develop a unique, high-level, concept model that will (1) help examine the consequences COVID-19 has had on prison population and flow dynamics in Illinois and (2) explore (to the extent possible) how that will unfold in the short- and mid-term future. Argonne has unique expertise in dynamic systems modeling and highly specialized simulation capabilities, which will be helpful in developing such a model. The ultimate objective of this CRADA is to develop with the Illinois Public Sentencing Policy Advisory Council (SPAC) the capability to identify and understand factors and interactions associated with prison population and flow dynamics in Illinois. This understanding will then potentially lead to improvements in the allocation of various resources and services. This approach would also be useful to all other states.
