Code to map Xray reflectivity data from real space to reciprocal space

Code to map X-ray reflectivity data from real space to reciprocal space. The code is written as a Jupyter notebook. Example data are included as a separate file (example_data.csv). These data were collected on a Panalytical XRD system. As a first step, run all cells in the notebook. Opportunities are identified for users to make their own choices for choosing the boundaries of the region of interest to estimate background. A simple algorithm is used to estimate background from the outer regions of the data collection region, interpolating the result inside the region of interest. The background is removed and then the data mapped to Qx-Qz (reciprocal space) coordinates. The results are written as NumPy binary and Matlab formatted files.

Geometric Structure and Transversal Logic of Quantum Reed–Muller Codes

Designing efficient and noise-tolerant quantum computation protocols generally begins with an understanding of quantum error-correcting codes and their native logical operations. The simplest class of native operations are transversal gates, which are naturally fault-tolerant. Here, in this paper, we aim to characterize the transversal gates of quantum Reed–Muller (RM) codes by exploiting the well-studied properties of their classical counterparts. We start our work by establishing a new geometric characterization of quantum RM codes via the Boolean hypercube and its associated subcube complex. More specifically, a set of stabilizer generators for a quantum RM code can be described via transversal X and Z operators acting on subcubes of particular dimensions. This characterization leads us to define subcube operators composed of single-qubit π/2 k Z -rotations that act on subcubes of given dimensions. We first characterize the action of subcube operators on the code space: depending on the dimension of the subcube, these operators either (1) act as a logical identity on the code space, (2) implement non-trivial logic, or (3) rotate a state away from the code space. Second, and more remarkably, we uncover that the logic implemented by these operators corresponds to circuits of multi-controlled-Z gates that have an explicit and simple combinatorial description. Overall, this suite of results yields a comprehensive understanding of a class of natural transversal operators for quantum RM codes.

Quantum minimal surfaces from quantum error correction

We show that complementary state-specific reconstruction of logical (bulk) operators is equivalent to the existence of a quantum minimal surface prescription for physical (boundary) entropies. This significantly generalizes both sides of an equivalence previously shown by Harlow[1]; in particular, we do not require the entanglement wedge to be the same for all states in the code space. In developing this theorem, we construct an emergent bulk geometry for general quantum codes, defining ``areas'' associated to arbitrary logical subsystems, and argue that this definition is ``functionally unique.'' We also formalize a definition of bulk reconstruction that we call ``state-specific product unitary’’ reconstruction. This definition captures the quantum error correction (QEC) properties present in holographic codes and has potential independent interest as a very broad generalization of QEC; it includes most traditional versions of QEC as special cases. Our results extend to approximate codes, and even to the ``non-isometric codes'' that seem to describe the interior of a black hole at late times.

SPACE: 3D parallel solvers for Vlasov-Maxwell and Vlasov-Poisson equations for relativistic plasmas with atomic transformations

A parallel, relativistic, three-dimensional particle-in-cell code SPACE has been developed for the simulation of electromagnetic fields, relativistic particle beams, and plasmas. In addition to the standard second-order Particle-in-Cell (PIC) algorithm, SPACE includes efficient novel algorithms to resolve atomic physics processes such as multi-level ionization of plasma atoms, recombination, and electron attachment to dopants in dense neutral gases. SPACE also contains a highly adaptive particle-based method, called Adaptive Particle-in-Cloud (AP-Cloud), for solving the Vlasov-Poisson problems. It eliminates the traditional Cartesian mesh of PIC and replaces it with an adaptive octree data structure. The code's algorithms, structure, capabilities, parallelization strategy, and performance have been discussed. Additionally, typical examples of SPACE applications to accelerator science and engineering problems are described.

Quantum error thresholds for gauge-redundant digitizations of lattice field theories

In the quantum simulation of lattice gauge theories, gauge symmetry can be either fixed or encoded as a redundancy of the Hilbert space. While gauge-fixing reduces the number of qubits, keeping the gauge redundancy can provide code space to mitigate and correct quantum errors by checking and restoring Gauss’s law. In this work, we consider the correctable errors for generic finite gauge groups and design the quantum circuits to detect and correct them. We calculate the error thresholds below which the gauge-redundant digitization with Gauss’s law error correction has better fidelity than the gauge-fixed digitization involving only gauge-invariant states. Our results provide guidance for fault-tolerant quantum simulations of lattice gauge theories. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Cross-Cap Defects and Fault-Tolerant Logical Gates in the Surface Code and the Honeycomb Floquet Code

We consider the Z 2 toric code, surface code, and Floquet code defined on a nonorientable surface, which can be considered as families of codes extending Shor’s nine-qubit code. We investigate the fault-tolerant logical gates of the Z 2 toric code in this setup, which corresponds to e ↔ m exchanging symmetry of the underlying Z 2 gauge theory. We find that nonorientable geometry provides a new way for the emergent symmetry to act on the code space, and discover the new realization of the fault-tolerant Hadamard gate of the two-dimensional surface code with a single cross cap connecting the vertices nonlocally along a slit, dubbed a nonorientable surface code. This Hadamard gate can be realized by a constant-depth local unitary circuit modulo nonlocality caused by a cross cap. Via folding, the nonorientable surface code can be turned into a bilayer local quantum code, where the folded cross cap is equivalent to a bilayer twist terminated on a gapped boundary and the logical Hadamard only contains local gates with intralayer couplings when being away from the cross cap, as opposed to the interlayer couplings on each site needed in the case of the folded surface code. We further obtain the complete logical Clifford gate set for a stack of nonorientable surface codes and similarly for codes defined on Klein-bottle geometries. We then construct the honeycomb Floquet code in the presence of a single cross cap, and find that the period of the sequential Pauli measurements acts as a H Z logical gate on the single logical qubit, where the cross cap enriches the dynamics compared with the orientable case. We find that the dynamics of the honeycomb Floquet code is precisely described by a condensation operator of the Z 2 gauge theory, and illustrate the exotic dynamics of our code in terms of a condensation operator supported at a nonorientable surface. Efficient numerical algorithm for multi-level ionization of high-atomic-number gases

An efficient numerical algorithm for laser driven multi-level ionization of high-atomic-number gases is proposed and implemented in an electromagnetic particle-in-cell code SPACE. The algorithm is based on analytical solutions to the system of differential equations describing ionization evolution. Using analytical solutions resolves the multiscale issue of ionization due to different characteristic time scales of ionization processes and the main code time step. Algorithm efficiency and memory requirements are significantly improved by using a locally reduced system of differential equations. The algorithm also assigns proper orbital quantum numbers and their projections to ionization states. The algorithm is verified and validated using experimental data.

Entanglement wedge reconstruction using the Petz map

At the heart of recent progress in AdS/CFT is the question of subregion duality, or entanglement wedge reconstruction: which part(s) of the boundary CFT are dual to a given subregion of the bulk? This question can be answered by appealing to the quantum error correcting properties of holography, and it was recently shown that robust bulk (entanglement wedge) reconstruction can be achieved using a universal recovery channel known as the twirled Petz map. In short, one can use the twirled Petz map to recover bulk data from a subset of the boundary. However, this map involves an averaging procedure over bulk and boundary modular time, and hence it can be somewhat intractable to evaluate in practice. We show that a much simpler channel, the Petz map, is sufficient for entanglement wedge reconstruction for any code space of fixed finite dimension – no twirling is required. Moreover, the error in the reconstruction will always be non-perturbatively small. From a quantum information perspective, we prove a general theorem extending the use of the Petz map as a general-purpose recovery channel to subsystem and operator algebra quantum error correction.

Entanglement wedge reconstruction and the information paradox

When absorbing boundary conditions are used to evaporate a black hole in AdS/CFT, we show that there is a phase transition in the location of the quantum Ryu-Takayanagi surface, at precisely the Page time. The new RT surface lies slightly inside the event horizon, at an infalling time approximately the scrambling time β/2 π logS BH into the past. We can immediately derive the Page curve, using the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, and the Hayden-Preskill decoding criterion, using entanglement wedge reconstruction. Because part of the interior is now encoded in the early Hawking radiation, the decreasing entanglement entropy of the black hole is exactly consistent with the semiclassical bulk entanglement of the late-time Hawking modes, despite the absence of a firewall.By studying the entanglement wedge of highly mixed states, we can understand the state dependence of the interior reconstructions. A crucial role is played by the existence of tiny, non-perturbative errors in entanglement wedge reconstruction. Directly after the Page time, interior operators can only be reconstructed from the Hawking radiation if the initial state of the black hole is known. As the black hole continues to evaporate, reconstructions become possible that simultaneously work for a large class of initial states. Using similar techniques, we generalise Hayden-Preskill to show how the amount of Hawking radiation required to reconstruct a large diary, thrown into the black hole, depends on both the energy and the entropy of the diary. Finally we argue that, before the evaporation begins, a single, state-independent interior reconstruction exists for any code space of microstates with entropy strictly less than the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, and show that this is sufficient state dependence to avoid the AMPSS typical-state firewall paradox.

Simulation of the RF system with reversed phasing

In this paper we report on the ELEGANT simulation for the Electron Storage Ring (ESR) RF system with reversed phasing using the lattice version of 5.3 at 5 GeV energy. The full beam dynamics results, including energy spread, bunch length and centroid offset as a function of bunch number in the train are presented. Some of the RF system related parameters, required as the input for particle tracking simulations, have been calculated analytically using the RF system related equations. The obtained results has been compared with the results simulated by Tianmu Xin, Michael Blaskiewicz and Gabriele Bassi using C++ and the SPACE codes.

Beam Dynamics Simulations of Transient Beam Loading Effects in the 10GeV EIC Electron Storage Ring

We report on beam dynamics studies of transient beam loading effects in the 10 GeV EIC electron storage ring [1]. The studies are carried out with time-dependent Vlasov-Fokker-Planck simulations performed with the parallel, particle tracking code SPACE [2], which allows to follow self-consistently the dynamics of h bunches, where h in the number of RF buckets, in arbitrary multi-bunch configurations. The specific goal of the numerical simulations is to determine stable RF cavity settings under heavy beam loading. We also study the option to operate with a passive, third-harmonic cavity (3HC) system for bunch lengthening, addressing both stability and the performance limitation due to a gap in the uniform filling pattern for ion clearing.

Relations between Shot Noise, Gain Bandwidth, and Saturation of Instabilities

There are numerous instabilities present in charged particle beams that undergo exponential growth and reach saturation. In various applications, such as free-electron lasers or micro-bunching light sources, achieving saturation is desirable. Conversely, there are applications where these instabilities are utilized as linear broad-band amplifiers for signals embedded in the charged beam. In the latter scenario, the saturation of an instability induces non-linear distortions in the imprinted signal, thereby limiting the useful range of such amplifiers. Accurate evaluation of these instabilities necessitates a complete and comprehensive modeling approach that includes shot noise within the beam. Unfortunately, such modeling is not always feasible or practical. In this paper, we introduce a methodology utilizing the frequency and bandwidth of the instability as key parameters. Through this, we derive an estimation for the range of linear instability growth. Our derivation is conducted in a model-independent manner, making it applicable to a broad spectrum of instabilities. To validate our approach, we employ established and thoroughly benchmarked simulations with a free electron laser (FEL) code as well as self-consistent 3-dimensional simulation of plasma-cascade instability using code SPACE.

Achieving Ducts in Conditioned Space

As codes push for greater energy savings, production homebuilders must consider ways to reduce the energy use associated with HVAC system performance. One prominent and effective approach to reduce energy use is the transition of ductwork from unconditioned space (attics, crawlspaces, basements) into conditioned space.

Parallel Simulation of Beam Dynamics in Particle Accelerators [Slides]

Particle accelerators are among the most versatile and important tools of scientific discovery. The Nation's accelerators are responsible for a wealth of advances in materials science, chemistry, the biosciences, particle physics, and nuclear physics. They also have important applications to national security, the environment, energy, medicine, and on the quality of people's lives. LANL has a long history of making pioneering contributions to Accelerator Science including key contributions to the field of Computational Accelerator Physics. These include the development of early beam dynamics codes with space charge (such as PARMILA and PARMELA), the development of rf cavity codes and magnet codes (including Poisson and Superfish), and the development and distribution of codes to the accelerator community through the Los Alamos Accelerator Code Group. LANL researchers also helped pioneer the development of massively parallel space-charge codes. In project t22_accelsim we have moved beyond electrostatic models of collective effects (i.e., solving the Poisson equation in the bunch frame) to fully electromagnetic models based on the Lienard-Wiechert formalism. This approach enables the large-scale simulation of radiation production and collective effects in high brightness electron beams. This is highly relevant to LANL given its future goal of developing an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). It also directly impacts a LANL LDRD project to develop an undulator-based non-invasive beam profile monitor for beams created in laser-plasma accelerator systems.

Physics basis for design of 3D coils in tokamaks

Recent progress in 3D tokamak modeling is now leveraged to create a conceptual design of new external 3D field coils for the DIII-D tokamak. In this work generalized perturbed equilibrium code is used to determine optimally efficient spectrum for driving total, core, and edge neoclassical toroidal viscosity torque. These fundamental modes of 3D control are shown to have consistent outboard structures across a wide variety of plasma scenarios and machines. Given these target spectra, the currents and 3D geometry of multiple coils can be optimized to increase efficient drive for the physics of interest without undesired secondary effects. Here, this nonlinear optimization is demonstrated using the flexible optimized coils using space-curves code. The optimized coils are individually distorted in space, creating toroidal 'arrays' containing a variety of shapes that often wrap around a significant poloidal extent of the machine. Importantly, efficient coupling can be maintained even when enforcing large distances between coils and the plasma during the geometric optimization of coil designs. Finally, the physics-driven optimization presented here thus provides a practical path to utilizing coils built on the exterior of the vacuum chamber in future reactors to obtain the powerful 3D field benefits demonstrated on current machines with close, internal coils.
