A Unified Perspective on Poincaré and Galilei Relativity: I. Special Relativity

A semantic adjustment to what physicists mean by the terms ‘special relativity’ and ‘general relativity’ is suggested, which prompts a conceptual shift to a more unified perspective on physics governed by the Poincaré group and physics governed by the Galilei group. After exploring the limits of a unified perspective available in the setting of 4-dimensional spacetime, a particular central extension of the Poincaré group—analogous to the Bargmann group that is a central extension of the Galilei group—is presented that deepens a unified perspective on Poincaré and Galilei physics in a 5-dimensional spacetime setting. The immediate focus of this paper is classical physics on affine 4-dimensional and 5-dimensional spacetimes (‘special relativity’ as redefined here), including the electrodynamics that gave rise to Poincaré physics in the first place, but the results here may suggest the existence of a ‘Galilei general relativity’ more extensive than generally known, to be pursued in the sequel.

Casimir effect in Very Special Relativity at finite temperature

Recently a great deal of interest in field theories formulated in a Lorentz violating framework has been developed. Here the Very Special Relativity (VSR) is considered. The main aspect in the VSR proposal is that laws of physics are invariant under the subgroups of the Poincaré group preserving the basic elements of special relativity. An important point is that the photon acquires a mass. In this context, the energy–momentum tensor for the electromagnetic field is calculated. From this, the Stefan–Boltzmann law and Casimir effect at finite temperature in VSR are obtained. The effects of temperature are introduced using the Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD) formalism. A comparative analysis with the Casimir effect for the standard electromagnetic case is developed.

Introduction to Special Relativity

The goal of this lecture is to introduce the student to the theory of Special Relativity. Not to overload the content with mathematics, the author will stick to the simplest cases; in particular only reference frames using Cartesian coordinates and translating along the common x-axis as in Fig. 1 will be used. The general expressions will be quoted or may be found in the cited literature.

Realizability-preserving discontinuous Galerkin method for spectral two-moment radiation transport in special relativity

Here we present a realizability-preserving numerical method for solving a spectral two-moment model to simulate the transport of massless, neutral particles interacting with a steady background material moving with relativistic velocities. The model is obtained as the special relativistic limit of a four-momentum-conservative general relativistic two-moment model. Using a maximum-entropy closure, we solve for the Eulerian-frame energy and momentum. The proposed numerical method is designed to preserve moment realizability, which corresponds to moments defined by a nonnegative phase-space density. The realizability-preserving method is achieved with the following key components: (i) a discontinuous Galerkin phase-space discretization with specially constructed numerical fluxes in the spatial and energy dimensions; (ii) a strong stability-preserving implicit-explicit time-integration method; (iii) a realizability-preserving conserved to primitive moment solver; (iv) a realizability-preserving implicit collision solver; and (v) a realizability-enforcing limiter. Component (iii) is necessitated by the closure procedure, which closes higher order moments nonlinearly in terms of primitive moments. The nonlinear conserved to primitive and the implicit collision solves are formulated as fixed-point problems, which are solved with custom iterative solvers designed to preserve the realizability of each iterate. With a series of numerical tests, we demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of this discontinuous-Galerkin-implicit-explicit method.

Integrated Proteomics and Lipidomics Reveal That the Swarming Motility of Paenibacillus polymyxa Is Characterized by Phospholipid Modification, Surfactant Deployment, and Flagellar Specialization Relative to Swimming Motility

Paenibacillus polymyxa is a Gram-positive bacterium commonly found associated with plant roots. P. polymyxa can exhibit two forms of flagellar motility: swimming in liquid culture and swarming on a surface. Here, swimming cells were compared to swarming cells using an integrated proteomic and lipidomic approach, yielding information about how lipid modifications and protein/enzyme pathways are tailored for these specific phenotypes. Observed differences in both phospholipid composition and metabolism between the two conditions suggest membrane remodeling in response to the surrounding environment. Key enzymes involved in glycerophospholipid metabolism were abundant in swimming bacteria, while enzymes associated with glycerol-3-phosphate metabolism were more abundant in swarming bacteria. Several glycoside hydrolases were either unique to or more abundant during swarming. This likely reflects the degradation of their own exopolysaccharides to both enhance swarming and supply the necessary chemical energy to compensate for increased flagellar synthesis. The observed upregulation of biosynthetic gene clusters (polyketides, lantibiotics, and surfactin) in swarming bacteria suggest the importance of signaling, antimicrobial activity, and surfactin production during this mode of motility – the latter of which is confirmed via RT-PCR.

What is relativity all about?

Einstein’s theory of special relativity is one of the fascinating scientific advances of the 20th century. Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln has decided to make a series of videos describing this amazing idea. In this video, he lays out what relativity is all about… what is the entire point. And it’s not what you think. It’s not about clocks moving slower and objects shrinking. It’s about… well, you’ll have to watch to see.

Stressing the importance of plant specialized metabolites: omics-based approaches for discovering specialized metabolism in plant stress responses

Plants produce a diverse range of specialized metabolites that play pivotal roles in mediating environmental interactions and stress adaptation. These unique chemical compounds also hold significant agricultural, medicinal, and industrial values. Despite the expanding knowledge of their functions in plant stress interactions, understanding the intricate biosynthetic pathways of these natural products remains challenging due to gene and pathway redundancy, multifunctionality of proteins, and the activity of enzymes with broad substrate specificity. In the past decade, substantial progress in genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics has made the exploration of plant specialized metabolism more feasible than ever before. Notably, recent advances in integrative multi-omics and computational approaches, along with other technologies, are accelerating the discovery of plant specialized metabolism. In this review, we present a summary of the recent progress in the discovery of plant stress-related specialized metabolites. Emphasis is placed on the application of advanced omics-based approaches and other techniques in studying plant stress-related specialized metabolism. Additionally, we discuss the high-throughput methods for gene functional characterization. These advances hold great promise for harnessing the potential of specialized metabolites to enhance plant stress resilience in the future.

Relativity's key concept: Lorentz gamma

Einstein’s theory of special relativity is one of the most counterintuitive ideas in physics, for instance, moving clocks record time differently than stationary ones. Central to all of the equations of relativity is the Lorentz factor, also known as gamma. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln not only shows you a simple way to derive gamma, he also tells you its physical significance.

Collaborative Research: Effects of the magnetic field shear and flow shear on the kinetic physics and particle acceleration in relativistic magnetic reconnection (Final Report)

Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma process that allows rapid changes of magnetic field topology and the conversion of magnetic energy into plasma kinetic energy. There has been a strong surge of interest in relativistic reconnection over the past few years in plasma astrophysics, but the rich physics of collisionless reconnection and its associated particle acceleration in the relativistic regime remain less studied compared to the non-relativistic counterparts. Magnetic reconnection in a realistic system is often accompanied with the magnetic field shear and shear flows. This setting is more general and likely the more common situation where most reconnection takes place. Within the past few decades, researchers had made significant progress in understanding how magnetic reconnection works under these conditions in the non-relativistic regime. However, how the effect of special relativity, among other effects, influences the dynamics of reconnection in the strongly magnetized astrophysical plasmas under these conditions is largely unknown. Our proposed research is to use fully kinetic simulations to understand kinetic physics and particle acceleration in relativistic magnetic reconnection in more realistic configurations and physical conditions. The primary goal of this project is to identify the fundamental effects caused by special relativity under the presence of field shear and flow shear.

New insights into supradense matter from dissecting scaled stellar structure equations

The strong-field gravity in general relativity (GR) realized in neutron stars (NSs) renders the equation of state (EOS) P(ε) of supradense neutron star matter to be essentially nonlinear and refines the upper bound for Φ ≡ P/ε to be much smaller than the special relativity (SR) requirement with linear EOSs, where P and ε are respectively the pressure and energy density of the system considered. Specifically, a tight bound Φ ≲ 0.374 is obtained by perturbatively anatomizing the intrinsic structures of the scaled Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff (TOV) equations without using any input nuclear EOS. New insights gained from this novel analysis provide EOS-model-independent constraints on the properties (e.g., density profiles of the sound speed squared s 2 = dP/dε and trace anomaly Δ = 1/3 – Φ) of cold supradense matter in NS cores. Using the gravity-matter duality in theories describing NSs, we investigate the impact of gravity on supradense matter EOS in NSs. In particular, we show that the NS mass M NS , radius R, and compactness ξ ≡ M NS /R scale with certain combinations of its central pressure and energy density (encapsulating its central EOS). Thus, observational data on these properties of NSs can straightforwardly constrain NS central EOSs without relying on any specific nuclear EOS model.

Twin paradox: the real explanation (no math)

The Twin Paradox is the most famous of all of the seeming-inconsistencies of special relativity. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln explains it without using mathematics. This is a companion video for his earlier one in which the same question was handled mathematically.

Twin paradox: the real explanation

There is no more famous conundrum in special relativity than the Twin Paradox. One twin travels at great distance at the speed of light and returns, much younger than the other twin. Yet who is moving and who isn’t? It is commonly claimed that acceleration is crucial to explaining this paradox, yet it turns out to not be the important point. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln explains the real answer to this perplexing puzzle.

Energy in gravitation and Noether’s theorems

Here, I exhibit the conflicting roles of Noether's two great theorems in defining conserved quantities, especially energy in general relativity and its extensions: it is the breaking of coordinate invariance through boundary conditions that removes the barrier her second theorem otherwise poses to the applicability of her first. There is nothing new observed, except the emphasis that general must be broken down to special relativity in a special, but physically natural, way in order for Poincaré or other global groups such as (A)dS to 're-'emerge.
