A lattice approach to spinorial quantum gravity

A new lattice regularization of quantum general relativity based on Ashtekar's reformulation of Hamiltonian general relativity is presented. In this form, quantum states of the gravitational field are represented within the physical Hilbert space of a Kogut-Susskind lattice gauge theory. The gauge field of the theory is a complexified SU(2) connection which is the gravitational connection for left-handed spinor fields. The physical states of the gravitational field are those which are annihilated by additional constraints which correspond to the four constraints of general relativity. Lattice versions of these constraints are constructed. Those corresponding to the three-dimensional diffeomorphism generators move states associated with Wilson loops around on the lattice. The lattice Hamiltonian constraint has a simple form, and a correspondingly simple interpretation: it is an operator which cuts and joins Wilson loops at points of intersection.

Discrete Dirac equation on a finite half-integer lattice

The formulation of the Dirac equation on a discrete lattice with half-integer spacing and periodic boundary conditions is investigated analytically. The importance of lattice formulations for problems in field theory and quantum mechanics is explained; the concept of half-integer Fourier representation is introduced; the discrete Dirac equation for the two-dimensional case is derived; dispersion relations for the four-dimensional case are developed; and the spinor formulation for the Dirac fields on the half-integer lattice and the discrete time variable for the four-dimensional time-dependent Dirac equation are obtained. It is argued that the half-integer lattice, because it takes the Dirac Lagrangian into account, is more than a mere relabeling of the integer lattice and may have fundamental physical meaning (e.g., for the statistics of fermions). It is noted that the present formulation does not lead to species doubling, except in the continuum limit.

Inconsistency of topologically massive hypergravity

The coupled topologically massive spin-5/2 gravity system in D = 3 dimensions whose kinematics represents dynamical propagating gauge invariant massive spin-5/2 and spin-2 excitations, is shown to be inconsistent, or equivalently, not locally hypersymmetric. In contrast to D = 4, the local constraints on the system arising from failure of the fermionic Bianchi identities do not involve the 'highest spin' components of the field, but rather the auxiliary spinor required to construct a consistent massive model.

Particle localization, spinor two-valuedness, and Fermi quantization of tensor systems

Recent studies of particle localization shows that square-integrable positive energy bispinor fields in a Minkowski space-time cannot be physically distinguished from constrained tensor fields. In this paper we generalize this result by characterizing all classical tensor systems, which admit Fermi quantization, as those having unitary Lie-Poisson brackets. Examples include Euler's tensor equation for a rigid body and Dirac's equation in tensor form.

Physical Properties of the Solar Atmosphere Derived from Comparison of Spectro-Polarimetric SDO/HMI Observables with 3D Radiative MHD Simulations

In this study, we compare the SDO/HMI line-of-sight observables (magnetic field, velocity, continuum intensity, and line depth) with the related physical properties for several dynamo simulation runs performed using the "StellarBox" 3D Radiative MHD code. The modeling of the Fe I 6173 A Stokes profiles is performed using the SPINOR radiative transfer code in the LTE approximation. The reproduced SDO/HMI line-of-sight pipeline is applied to the modeled spectra, and the observables are synthesized with high (numerical) and SDO/HMI (instrumental) resolutions. Correlations between the observables and the physical properties at various heights in the atmosphere are studied for a set of view angles (0, 30, 45, 60, 70, and 80 degrees away from the solar disk center). It is found that the SDO/HMI magnetic field and velocity measurements are unambiguously correlated with physical parameters at certain heights of the solar atmosphere. These heights increase from about 100 km above the photosphere for the disk center case to 300-600 km above the photosphere for the 80-degree case. The heights are found to be slightly lower in regions where stronger magnetic fields are found. The comparison of the photospheric magnetic flux and integrated continuum intensity derived from the SDO/HMI observables and high-resolution observations and spectra is discussed. The results of our study improve physics-based interpretations of the SDO/HMI observables and provide a better understanding of the physical properties of the solar atmosphere.
