The Longitudinal Stability, Control Effectiveness, and Control Hinge Moment Characteristics Obtained from a Flight Investigation of a Canard Missile Configuration at Transonic and Supersonic Speeds

A 60 degree delta wing canard missile configuration was flight-tested at the Langley pilotless aircraft research station at Wallops Island, Va. The results include the longitudinal stability derivatives, control effectiveness, drag characteristics, and control-surface hinge-moment characteristics for a Mach number range of 0.7 to 1.45.

Effects on Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of a B-29 Airplane of Variations in Stick-force and Control-rate Characteristics Obtained Through Use of a Booster in the Elevator-control System

The longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a B-29 airplane have been measured with a control surface booster incorporated in the elevator-control system. The measurements were obtained with the booster operating to provide various control-force gradients and various maximum rates of control motion. Results are presented which show the effect of these booster parameters on the handling qualities of the test airplane.

Effect on Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of a Boeing B-29 Airplane of Variations in Stick-Force and Control-Rate Characteristics Obtained Through Use of a Booster in the Elevator-Control System

A longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a Boeing B-29 airplane have been measured with a booster incorporated in the elevator-control system. Tests were made to determine the effects on the handling qualities of the test airplane of variations in the pilot's control-force gradients as well as the effects of variations in the maximum rate of control motion supplied by the booster. The results of the control-rate investigation indicate that large airplanes may have satisfactory handling qualities with the booster adjusted to give much lower rates of control motion than those normally used by pilots.

Flight-Test Evaluation of the Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of 0.5-Scale Models of the Fairchild Lark Pilotless-Aircraft Configuration. Model with Wing Flaps Deflected 15 Degrees, TED No. NACA 2387

A flight test was conducted at the Flight Test Station of the Pilotless Aircraft Research Division at Wallops Island, Va., to determine the longitudinal control and stability characteristics of a 0.5-scale model of the Fairchild Lerk Pilotless aircraft with the horizontal wing flaps deflected 15 degrees. The data were obtained by the use of a telemeter and also by radar tracking. The results show an increase of effectiveness of the longitudinal control in producing normal accelerations up to a Mach number of 0.75 where this effectiveness gradually decreased becoming negative at a Mach number of 0.89. Previous tests with wing flaps undeflected an increase in effectiveness up to Mach number of 0.93 where a sudden loss of control occurred. The model was dynamically stable throughout the speed range. The data confirmed the drag increase at the critical Mach number for large angles of attack is indicated in high-speed wind-tunnel tests.

Flight-Test Evaluation of the Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of 0.5-Scale Models of the Fairchild Lark Pilotless-Aircraft Configuration: Standard Configuration with Wing Flaps Deflected 60 Degrees and Model having Tail in Line with Wings, TED No. NACA 2387

Flight tests were conducted at the Flight Test Station of the Pilotless Aircraft Research Division at Wallop Island, Va., to determine the longitudinal control and stability characteristics of 0.5-scale models of the Fairchild Lark pilotless aircraft with the tail in line with the wings a d with the horizontal wing flaps deflected 60 deg. The data were obtained by the use of a telemeter and by radar tracking.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation at Subsonic and Supersonic Speeds of a Fighter Model Employing a Low-Aspect-Ratio Unswept Wing and a Horizontal Tail Mounted Well Above the Wing Plane - Longitudinal Stability and Control

Experimental results showing the static longitudinal-stability and control characteristics of a model of a fighter airplane employing a low-aspect-ratio unswept wing and an all-movable horizontal tail are presented. The investigation was made over a Mach number range from 0.60 to 0.90 and from 1.35 to 1.90 at a constant Reynolds number of 2.40 million, based on the wing mean aerodynamic chord. Because of the location of the horizontal tail at the tip of the vertical tail, interference was noted between the vertical tail and the horizontal tail and between the wing and the horizontal tail. This interference produced a positive pitching-moment coefficient at zero lift throughout the Mach number range of the tests, reduced the change in stability with increasing lift coefficient of the wing at moderate lift coefficients in the subsonic speed range, and reduced the stability at low lift coefficients at high supersonic speeds. The lift and pitching-moment effectiveness of the all movable tail was unaffected by the interference effects and was constant throughout the lift-coefficient range of the tests at each Mach number except 1.90.

Wind-tunnel Tests of the 0.15-scale Powered Model of the Fleetwings XBTK-1 Airplane : Longitudinal Stability and Control

An investigation was made of the static longitudinal stability, and control and stall characteristics of XBTK-1 dive bomber. Results indicate that the longitudinal stability will probably be satisfactory for all contemplated flight conditions at the rear-most CG location with elevator both fixed and free. Power effects were small. Sufficient elevator control will be available to trim in any flight condition above the ground. Increasing the slotted flap deflection above 30 degrees only slightly increased the max. lift coefficient.
