Automatic stabilization

This report concerns the study of automatic stabilizers and extends it to include the control of the three-control system of the airplane instead of just altitude control. Some of the topics discussed include lateral disturbed motion, static stability, the mathematical theory of lateral motion, and large angles of incidence. Various mechanisms and stabilizers are also discussed. The feeding of Diesel engines by injection pumps actuated by engine compression, achieves the required high speeds of injection readily and permits rigorous control of the combustible charge introduced into each cylinder and of the peak pressure in the resultant cycle.

A theoretical analysis of the effect of time lag in an automatic stabilization system on the lateral oscillatory stability of an airplane

A method is presented for determining the effect of time lag in an automatic stabilization system on the lateral oscillatory stability of an airplane. The method is based on an analytical-graphical procedure. The critical time lag of the airplane-autopilot system is readily determined from the frequency-response analysis. The method is applied to a typical present-day airplane equipped with an automatic pilot sensitive to yawing acceleration and geared to the rudder so that rudder control is applied in proportion to the yawing acceleration. The results calculated for this airplane-autopilot system by this method are compared with the airplane motions calculated by a step-by-step procedure.

Results of Flight Test of an Automatically Stabilized Model C (Swept Back) Four-Wing Tiamat

The results of the first flight test of a swept-back four-wing version of Tiamat (MX-570 model C) which was launched at the NACA Pilotless Aircraft Research Station at W4110PB Island, Va. are presented. In general, the flight behavior was close to that predicted by calculations based an stability theory and oscillating table tests of the autopilot. The flight test thus indicates that the techniques employed to predict automatic stability are valid and practical from an operational viewpoint. The limitations of the method used to predict flight behavior arise from the fact that the calculations assume no coupling among roll, pitch, and yaw, while in actual flight some such coupling does exist.

Automatic Stabilization

This report lays more stress on the principles underlying automatic piloting than on the means of applications. Mechanical details of servomotors and the mechanical release device necessary to assure instantaneous return of the controls to the pilot in case of malfunction are not included. Descriptions are provided of various commercial systems.

LC-oscillator with automatic stabilized amplitude via bias current control

A stable excitation supply for measurement transducers is described. It consists of a single-transistor oscillator with a coil connected to the collector and a capacitor connected from the collector to the emitter. The output of the oscillator is rectified and the rectified signal acts as one input to a differential amplifier; the other input being a reference potential. The output of the amplifier is connected at a point between the emitter of the transistor and ground. When the rectified signal is greater than the reference signal, the differential amplifier produces a signal of polarity to reduce bias current and, consequently, amplification.

A method of automatically stabilizing helicopter sling loads

The effect of geometric and aerodynamic characteristics on the stability of the lateral degrees of freedom of a typical helicopter sling load is examined. The feasibility of stabilizing the suspended load by controllable fins was also studied. Linear control theory was applied to the design of a simple control law that stabilized the load over a wide range of helicopter airspeeds.

Automatic Stability of Airplanes

It is endeavored in this report to give a full outline of the problem of airplane stability and to classify the proposed solutions systematically. Longitudinal stability, which can be studied separately, is considered first. The combination of lateral and directional stabilities, which cannot be separated, will be dealt with later.

Theoretical Study of Various Airplane Motions After Initial Disturbance

The present investigation may be considered as preliminary to the study of automatic stabilizers. We have sought to determine first how an airplane of average characteristics reacts against the principal disturbances it may encounter. Without entering into the general study of automatic stabilizers, the present work suggests the idea of a stabilizer whose sensitive member would be a wind vane or pressure plate. The elements considered as variable were the coefficients of static stability - that is, the derivatives of the coefficients of the moments with respect to the angles of attack and of yaw; these angles may be determined by the vanes.
