Statistical correlation of structural mode shapes from test measurements and NASTRAN analytical values

The software and procedures of a system of programs used to generate a report of the statistical correlation between NASTRAN modal analysis results and physical tests results from modal surveys are described. Topics discussed include: a mathematical description of statistical correlation, a user's guide for generating a statistical correlation report, a programmer's guide describing the organization and functions of individual programs leading to a statistical correlation report, and a set of examples including complete listings of programs, and input and output data.

A statistical correlation method for the retrieval of atmospheric moisture profiles by microwave radiometry

A statistical correlation technique is applied to the retrieval of vertical moisture profiles under clear-sky conditions from down-looking radiometric measurements of atmospheric radiation at microwave wavelengths. For a given set of channels, the method selects the optimum radiometric channels for estimating water vapor at specific pressure levels between the surface and 300 mb. The water vapor mixing ratio at these pressure levels is then calculated from a linear combination of the selected channel brightness temperatures. To test its validity the algorithm was applied, in a numerical experiment, to fifty independent tropical radiosondes. The rms absolute deviation of the estimated moisture profiles from the actual profiles was comparable to that obtained using an iterative retrieval method reported earlier. The statistical method, however, requires several orders of magnitude less computer time than the iterative method; it is suitable for high speed processing of large amounts of data.

Statistical correlation analysis for comparing vibration data from test and analysis

A theory was developed to compare vibration modes obtained by NASTRAN analysis with those obtained experimentally. Because many more analytical modes can be obtained than experimental modes, the analytical set was treated as expansion functions for putting both sources in comparative form. The dimensional symmetry was developed for three general cases: nonsymmetric whole model compared with a nonsymmetric whole structural test, symmetric analytical portion compared with a symmetric experimental portion, and analytical symmetric portion with a whole experimental test. The theory was coded and a statistical correlation program was installed as a utility. The theory is established with small classical structures.

Optical probing of supersonic flows with statistical correlation

Remote sensing tool reliably measures statistical properties of supersonic turbulence. Tool neither affects nor is adversely affected by flow field. Device determines characteristics of supersonic flow with optical system and provides method and apparatus for separating translational and rotational motions of turbulent structures in supersonic flow.

Characterizing the Joint Effect of Diverse Test-Statistic Correlation Structures and Effect Size on False Discovery Rates in a Multiple-Comparison Study of Many Outcome Measures

In their 2009 Annals of Statistics paper, Gavrilov, Benjamini, and Sarkar report the results of a simulation assessing the robustness of their adaptive step-down procedure (GBS) for controlling the false discovery rate (FDR) when normally distributed test statistics are serially correlated. In this study we extend the investigation to the case of multiple comparisons involving correlated non-central t-statistics, in particular when several treatments or time periods are being compared to a control in a repeated-measures design with many dependent outcome measures. In addition, we consider several dependence structures other than serial correlation and illustrate how the FDR depends on the interaction between effect size and the type of correlation structure as indexed by Foerstner s distance metric from an identity. The relationship between the correlation matrix R of the original dependent variables and R~, the correlation matrix of associated t-statistics is also studied. In general R~ depends not only on R, but also on sample size and the signed effect sizes for the multiple comparisons.

Homogeneity of spatial correlation statistics of tropical oceanic rainfall

The possibility of uniform horizontal correlation scales for tropical oceanic rainfall has been examined by a study of satellite-observed microwave data as a proxy measure of rain rates. From the brightness temperatures from the electrically scanning microwave radiometer on Nimbus 5 near nadir during the year 1974, the mean spatial autocorrelation function as a function of simultaneous pixel separation was calculated in each 5 by 5 deg grid box over the tropical Pacific and Atlantic for each season. The equal-time spatially lagged correlations were compared for geographical dependence to investigate the hypothesis of homogeneity. A simple model of the spatial statistics of the microwave brightness temperatures was used, consisting of a mixture of uncorrelated spatial white noise incoherently superimposed on a spatially correlated field (spatial red noise). The red noise signals are presumed to be generated by convective activity in the tropical atmosphere. The parameters of the red noise are consistent with this scheme over the tropical oceans, yielding a uniform spatial scale of about 50 km throughout.

Statistical Correlation of Low-Altitude ENA Emissions with Geomagnetic Activity from IMAGE MENA Observations

Plasma sheet particles transported Earthward during times of active magnetospheric convection can interact with exospheric/thermospheric neutrals through charge exchange. The resulting Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs) are free to leave the influence of the magnetosphere and can be remotely detected. ENAs associated with low-altitude (300-800 km) ion precipitation in the high-latitude atmosphere/ionosphere are termed low-altitude emissions (LAEs). Remotely observed LAEs are highly nonisotropic in velocity space such that the pitch angle distribution at the time of charge exchange is near 90deg. The Geomagnetic Emission Cone of LAEs can be mapped spatially, showing where proton energy is deposited during times of varying geomagnetic activity. In this study we present a statistical look at the correlation between LAE flux (intensity and location) and geomagnetic activity. The LAE data are from the MENA imager on the IMAGE satellite over the declining phase of solar cycle 23 (2000-2005). The SYM-H, AE, and Kp indices are used to describe geomagnetic activity. The goal of the study is to evaluate properties of LAEs in ENA images and determine if those images can be used to infer properties of ion precipitation. Results indicate a general positive correlation to LAE flux for all three indices, with the SYM-H showing the greatest sensitivity. The magnetic local time distribution of LAEs is centered about midnight and spreads with increasing activity. The invariant latitude for all indices has a slightly negative correlation. The combined results indicate LAE behavior similar to that of ion precipitation.

Report on 3 and 4-point correlation statistics in the COBE DMR anisotrophy maps

As part of the work performed under NASA contract # NAS5-32648, we have computed the 3-point and 4-point correlation functions of the COBE-DNIR 2-year and 4-year anisotropy maps. The motivation for this study was to search for evidence of non-Gaussian statistical fluctuations in the temperature maps: skewness or asymmetry in the case of the 3-point function, kurtosis in the case of the 4-point function. Such behavior would have very significant implications for our understanding of the processes of galaxy formation, because our current models of galaxy formation predict that non-Gaussian features should not be present in the DMR maps. The results of our work showed that the 3-point correlation function is consistent with zero and that the 4-point function is not a very sensitive probe of non-Gaussian behavior in the COBE-DMR data. Our computation and analysis of 3-point correlations in the 2-year DMR maps was published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, volume 446, page L67, 1995. Our computation and analysis of 3-point correlations in the 4-year DMR maps will be published, together with some additional tests, in the June 10, 1996 issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. Copies of both of these papers are attached as an appendix to this report.

As part of the work performed under this contract, we have computed the 3- and 4-point correlation functions of the COBE-DMR 2-year and 4-year anisotropy maps. The results of our work showed that the 3-point correlation function is consistent with zero and that the 4-point function is not a very sensitive probe of non-Gaussian behavior in the COBE-DMR data.

The influence of processor focus on speckle correlation statistics for a Shuttle imaging radar scene of Hurricane Josephine

The surface wave field produced by Hurricane Josephine was imaged by the L-band SAR aboard the Challenger on October 12, 1984. Exponential trends found in the two-dimensional autocorrelations of speckled image data support an equilibrium theory model of sea surface hydrodynamics. The notions of correlated specular reflection, surface coherence, optimal Doppler parameterization and spatial resolution are discussed within the context of a Poisson-Rayleigh statistical model of the SAR imaging process.

The structure of the vorticity field in turbulent channel flow. Part 1: Analysis of instantaneous fields and statistical correlations

An investigation into the existence of hairpin vortices in turbulent channel flow is conducted using a database generated by the large eddy simulation technique. It is shown that away from the wall the distribution of the inclination angle of vorticity vector attains its maximum at about 45 deg to the wall. Two point correlations of velocity and vorticity fluctuations strongly support a flow model consisting of vortical structures inclined at 45 deg to the wall. The instantaneous vorticity vectors plotted in planes inclined at 45 deg show that the flow contains an appreciable number of hairpins. Vortex lines are used to display the three dimensional structure of hairpins, which are shown to be generated from deformation of transverse vortex filaments.

Dependence of Ru2O3 Activity on Composition of Silicate Melts: Using Statistical Correlations to Infer Thermodynamic Behavior in the Melt

Understanding variations in activity with composition is an essential step in improving prediction of partition coefficients during magma evolution. Variations in activity with composition are complex and do not generally exhibit ideal behavior relative to a traditional melt-component set. Although deviations from component ideality can be modeled numerically by simply fitting to compositional variables (such as in a regular or subregular solution model), such models have not been particularly successful for describing variations in trace component activities. A better approach might be to try to identify components that do a better job of describing the behavior of the species in the melt. Electrochemical Measurement of Ru2O3 activities: Electrodes were inserted into silicate melt beads of various compositions (Table 1) suspended on Ptwire loops in a 1-atm gas mixing furnace. An electrical potential was imposed between the electrodes, the imposed potential increasing along a step ramp with a pulse imposed on each step (Fig. 1). Current flows between electrodes when electroactive species in the melt are oxidized or reduced at the electrodes. The resulting current was measured at the top and bottom of the voltage pulse, and the difference (the differential current) was plotted against potential. The peak of the resulting curve is related to the activity coefficient for the particular electroactive species (Ru2O3) in the melt [1, 2, 3]. A significant part of the nonideal contribution to activity is due not to intrinsic properties of the component in the melt, but to our ignorance about the state and mixing properties of the component in the melt.

Total-sky and clear-sky variability of outgoing longwave radiation and shortwave radiation and its relation to cloud fluctuation statistics

Correlation statistics are used to investigate some of the characteristic temporal and spatial scales of the day-to-day changes in cloudiness which tend to dominate the variance of outgoing LW radiation and SW radiation fields. The temporal decorrelation time of the radiation field as measured by the lag time required for the autocorrelation of a region to fall to 0.4 is about 12 hours in the midlatitude storm track. Decorrelation time approaches one to two days when the averaging area of the region is increased significantly. Decorrelation times are also longer in the equatorial and tropical regions. The short decorrelation times are a manifestation of the creation, breakup, and movement of cloud systems. Cross-correlation analysis of the radiation field in the midlatitude storm track region and the subtropical dry zone shows advection speeds that range from about 25 m/sec in the storm tracks to about 8 m/sec in the subtropical dry zone.
