Performance Modeling of Network-Attached Storage Device Based Hierarchical Mass Storage Systems

Network attached storage devices improve I/O performance by separating control and data paths and eliminating host intervention during the data transfer phase. Devices are attached to both a high speed network for data transfer and to a slower network for control messages. Hierarchical mass storage systems use disks to cache the most recently used files and a combination of robotic and manually mounted tapes to store the bulk of the files in the file system. This paper shows how queuing network models can be used to assess the performance of hierarchical mass storage systems that use network attached storage devices as opposed to host attached storage devices. Simulation was used to validate the model. The analytic model presented here can be used, among other things, to evaluate the protocols involved in 1/0 over network attached devices.

Redox-Active Polymers Designed for the Circular Economy of Energy Storage Devices

Electrochemical energy storage is a keystone to support the rapid transition to a low-carbon-emission future for grid storage and transportation. While research on electrochemical energy storage devices has mostly dealt with performance improvements (energy density and power density), little attention has been paid to designing devices that can be recycled with low cost and low environmental impact. Thus, next-generation energy storage devices should also address the integration of recyclability into the device design. In this study, we demonstrate recyclable energy storage devices based on solution-processable redox-active conjugated polymers. The high electronic and ionic charge transport in these polymers enables the operation of single-phase electrodes in aqueous electrolytes with C-rates >100 with good electrochemical stability when the cell is charged to 1.2 V. Finally, we demonstrate the recyclability of these devices, achieving >85% capacity retention in each recycling step. Our work provides a framework for developing recyclable devices for sustainable energy storage technologies.

Systems, methods, and devices for failure detection of one or more energy storage devices

An energy storage device management system can include a management portion for charging/discharging an energy storage device and an ultrasound interrogation portion for passing ultrasound energy through the energy storage device during charge/discharge cycles. A memory stores a stream of capture data instances derived from ultrasound energy exiting the energy storage device and baseline ultrasound data instances corresponding with the energy storage device during normal charging/discharging thereof. A processor can compare each capture data instance with the baseline ultrasound data and detect abnormal operating states of the energy storage device. A warning system can issue a notification when abnormal operating states are detected.

Measuring the maximum capacity and thermal resistances in phase-change thermal storage devices

Thermal energy storage can increase the efficiency of the electric grid by adding flexibility to thermal systems. The value of thermal storage is a function of its energy and power density, which are driven by the capacity and thermal resistances in the storage device. Measuring these properties in-situ at the device level is an important step to understanding the performance and improving the design of thermal storage systems. Here, we present methods to measure the total capacity and thermal resistances in heat exchangers with integrated phase change materials. These methods are demonstrated on two thermal storage devices - a 570-kWh ice-based storage tank and a 0.35-kWh graphite-tetradecane composite device. The results show how thermal resistances evolve with the state of charge and discharge rate in these devices and quantify the impact of applied pressure on the contact resistance in composite phase change material heat exchangers. The proposed method allows for easy comparison between different systems and provides information on the thermal bottlenecks limiting performance. Ultimately, these measurements will allow designers to make robust, high-performance thermal storage devices for next-generation thermal systems.

Leveraging Computational Storage Devices in Campaign Storage [Slides]

Computational storage provides new ways of accelerating data-intensive applications. In-drive data management schemes matter (O_DIRECT, clustered index). Layer violation: “cheating” one filesystem may be possible; cheating multiple layers of filesystems is hard (FS internal load balancing, fail over, compression, concurrency control). The future directions include block-based acceleration to object-based acceleration.

Pilot Project for Spaceborne Massive Optical Storage Devices

A space bound storage device has many special requirements. In addition to large storage capacity, fas read/ write time, and high reliability, it also needs to have small volume, light weight, low power consumption, radiation hardening, ability to operate in extreme temperature ranges, etc. Holographic optical recording technology, which has been making major advancements in recent years, is an extremely promising candidate. The goal of this pilot project is to demonstrate a laboratory bench-top holographic optical recording storage system (HORSS) based on nonlinear polymer films 1 and/or other advanced photo-refractive materials. This system will be used as a research vehicle to study relevant optical properties of novel holographic optical materials, to explore massive optical storage technologies based on the photo-refractive effect and to evaluate the feasibility of developing a massive storage system, based on holographic optical recording technology, for a space bound experiment in the near future.

Influence of technology on magnetic tape storage device characteristics

There are available today many data storage devices that serve the diverse application requirements of the consumer, professional entertainment, and computer data processing industries. Storage technologies include semiconductors, several varieties of optical disk, optical tape, magnetic disk, and many varieties of magnetic tape. In some cases, devices are developed with specific characteristics to meet specification requirements. In other cases, an existing storage device is modified and adapted to a different application. For magnetic tape storage devices, examples of the former case are 3480/3490 and QIC device types developed for the high end and low end segments of the data processing industry respectively, VHS, Beta, and 8 mm formats developed for consumer video applications, and D-1, D-2, D-3 formats developed for professional video applications. Examples of modified and adapted devices include 4 mm, 8 mm, 12.7 mm and 19 mm computer data storage devices derived from consumer and professional audio and video applications. With the conversion of the consumer and professional entertainment industries from analog to digital storage and signal processing, there have been increasing references to the 'convergence' of the computer data processing and entertainment industry technologies. There has yet to be seen, however, any evidence of convergence of data storage device types. There are several reasons for this. The diversity of application requirements results in varying degrees of importance for each of the tape storage characteristics.

Development of Flexible Energy Storage Device for Wearable Electronics using All-organic Composites

As the demands and applications of wearable electronics increase, the need of power supply for wearable electronics becomes the critical issue. Both batteries and capacitors can be used as power supplier. In terms of energy storage device, capacitors have many advantages over the batteries, but have a lower energy storage density. To improve the energy density, composites, in which inorganic particles are embedded in a polymer matrix, have been identified as a promising approach to create the dielectrics with a higher energy storage density. The physics behind the composite approach is that the inorganics have a higher dielectric constant and polymers can stand with a higher electric field so that the composites can exhibit a relative dielectric constant and stand with a relative electric field. Therefore, the composites can exhibit a higher energy storage density. However, the embedment of inorganic particles into polymer severely reduces the flexibility of the polymer. To develop flexible energy storage ultracapacitors as an energy storage device for wearable electronics, an all-organic composite approach, in which a dielectric polymer is mixed with polar organic molecules, is introduced. It is experimentally found that by adding a small amount of polar organic molecules into dielectric polymers, the polymers exhibits a high dielectric constant and can stand with a higher electric field. More importantly, the flexibility of the all-organic composites is better than the polymer matrix. Therefore, the all-organic composites can be a strong and promising candidate for the development of flexible energy storage devices for the wearable electronics. In this study, three different dielectric polymers and three different polar molecules were studied. All the all-organic composite systems exhibit a significant improvement on the energy storage density. These new flexible energy storage devices are being developed to be fabricated with on-demandadditive electronics manufacturing processes, so that they can be fabricated when needed in space on the International Space Station and planned lunar habitat and other future missions. These flexible energy storage devices will provide the storage in concert with other printed power generation devices to allow crew health and structural health monitoring sensor devices and systems to be self-powered, not requiring any external power or batteries.

Optical storage device

A new holographic image storage device which uses four-wave mixing in two photorefractive crystals is described. Photorefractive crystals promise information storage densities on the order of 10(exp 9) to 10(exp 12) bits per cubic centimeter at real-time rates. Several studies in recent years have investigated the use of photorefractive crystals for storing holographic image information. However, all of the previous studies have focused on techniques for storing information in a single crystal. The disadvantage of using a single crystal is that the read process is destructive. Researchers have developed techniques for fixing the information in a crystal so that it may be read many times. However, when fixed, the information cannot be readily erased and overwritten with new information. It two photorefractive crystals are used, holographic image information may be stored dynamically. That is, the stored image information may be read out more than once, and it may be easily erased and overwritten with new image information.

Grid regulation services for energy storage devices based on grid frequency

Disclosed herein are representative embodiments of methods, apparatus, and systems for charging and discharging an energy storage device connected to an electrical power distribution system. In one exemplary embodiment, a controller monitors electrical characteristics of an electrical power distribution system and provides an output to a bi-directional charger causing the charger to charge or discharge an energy storage device (e.g., a battery in a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)). The controller can help stabilize the electrical power distribution system by increasing the charging rate when there is excess power in the electrical power distribution system (e.g., when the frequency of an AC power grid exceeds an average value), or by discharging power from the energy storage device to stabilize the grid when there is a shortage of power in the electrical power distribution system (e.g., when the frequency of an AC power grid is below an average value).
